"The Last Rose of Summer" is a poem written in 1805 by the Irish poet Thomas Moore. The poem is set to a traditional tune called "Aisling an Óigfhear", ( "The Young Man's Dream") which was transcribed by Edward Bunting in 1792, based on a performance by harper Denis Hempson (Donnchadh Ó hAmhsaigh) at the Belfast Harp Festival The poem and the tune together were published in December 1813 . Friedrich von Flotow: used the song as the aria "Letzte Rose" in his opera Martha

Thank you so much ❤️
It's my pleasure Barbara, thank you for listening, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video.
I’ve been looking forward to listening to this selection all day-well worth the wait . I like John McCormack singing operatic roles -his voice sounds richer and rounder , Richard Tauber and Feodor Chaliapin completed my list -once again thank you for the opportunity to hear some unfamiliar voices along with old favourites
Hello Marian, thanks for listening, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video.
I agree with what you say about John McCormack and the first time that I heard him was on an EP with four arias on it that an older colleague at work had recommended to me. It's a shame that he didn't make more operatic recordings.
Thank you very much, Michael, for an absolutely beautiful selection of fine voices, amazing renditions and excellent music… Each of the singers seem to own the aria or song they perform, which means that you chose wisely, with great taste and insight! Congratulations! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
It's my pleasure as always Harriet, thank you for listening and for your kind words, I'm glad that you like the selection.

Was there ever one I didn‘t like?
I don‘t think so!!!
Now I look forward to your latest video. I‘ll probably make it there tomorrow!
Warm regards and another big THANK YOU! 🍀 ☘️☘️ 🍀
Hello, dear Michael!
What a nice garland, thank you very much!
It's my pleasure Elena, thank you for listening, I'm glad that you like the video.
@@michaelmcgrailengland I really liked it very much. It was my birthday yesterday, and here it is in the morning - a new video from you after long time.
Thank you again, you are so kind 🌹
@@elenajha4357 Thanks for your lovely message Elena, I hope that you had a nice birthday.
It's actually a double coincidence as it was also my wife's birthday yesterday.
@@michaelmcgrailengland oh really???
My God)))
Best regards to her!
Amelita Galli Curci's Last rose of summer is very touching. So delicate & beautiful
Thanks for listening to this one as well Cris and I certainly agree with your comment, it's one of my favourite songs and Amelita sings it beautifully.
@@michaelmcgrailengland thank you for uploading this wonderful compilations
@@crisha721 My pleasure Cris.
I have finished long climbing for two days.
McCormack's che gelida... is first time to me. So gentle!!
Thanks for listening Chang, I hope that you enjoyed your hike, I'll watch your video later today.
Hello Chang, I enjoyed your latest video, beautiful mountain scenery and just enough azaleas to add a touch of colour here and there, and, of course, Mozart's wonderful music.
It must have been a long hike if it took two days but well worth the effort. How many kilometres did you walk and, by the way, have you stopped doing "shorts"?
Good night Changsberg
@@michaelmcgrailengland Thank you Michael!
This time hiking is best in my whole hikings. Perfect weather is first flowers are second to me.
This mountain is so far-away from Busan.
I had walked about 20 km.
Good night Michael!!
@@MountainwalkwithMusic Hello Chang, I've been busy preparing a new video and I think I still have one of yours to watch. Did you get the message that I posted on my previous Great Recordings video. If not this is it.
I've enjoyed watching your last two videos Chang and the music on both is excellent. We visited a park just a few miles from here the other day that they call Himalayan Gardens. It's very beautiful and mostly features different varieties of Rhododendron and Magnolia. It was expensive to get in but worth it.
I just noticed that in your first message on this video you asked why the tone was soft and I don't know. I haven't got a different computer, it must be my old ears playing tricks on me.
Enjoy the rest of the day, good night Chang
If your heading up a mountain, I hope you get to the top safely and if you are already at the top, I hope you get down safely, and don't miss the bus home!!
@@michaelmcgrailengland I sent you a reply after receiving previous message, but strangely, the reply disappeared. Maybe my smartphone has a problem.
I am sending the same reply to two places today.
Good night, Michael!
Nice selection Michael, haven't heard John singing that before, he had such a magnificent voice for opera, it's an awful pity that most people in Ireland only think of him singing ballads. Have Galli-Curchi in the quartet from Rigoletto. My husband's favourite version of Granada was Fritz Wunderlich ever since he first heard it on Tommy O'Brien's radio programme.
Thanks for listening Helena, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. I agree with you on John McCormack, I wish that he'd recorded more opera arias I think that he excelled at everything he sang, he shares top place in my list of favourite tenors with Enrico Caruso and Jussi Bjorling.
I used to listen to the great Tommy O'Brien programme myself. I usually recorded it and then picked off my favourites. He played a great variety of recordings.
I also agree that Fritz Wunderlich did a great recording of Granada and I'll be including one of his in my next video but I generally try to concentrate on the older mono recordings.
Granada ......no better version than the one of Mario Lanza.
Thanks for listening and for your comment.
Agreed! 👍
Second best and just a teeny tiny tad behind (in my opinion): the German version by Fritz Wunderlich… the brightly shining radiance of his voice is absolutely amazing… ⭐️
@@hrbooksmusic7878 Fritz Wunderlich .....the name was a programme : he was exceptional wunderlich as a tenor, i e simply (one of ) the best ......
@@meisterwue
And again our opinions agree - as they do much more often than not!!! 👍

Excellent as always, Michael McGrail. John McCormack's voice is liquid Gold. Athlones Gem. Did you Hear Jussi bjorling sing, che Gelida manina? In the film the Great Caruso. Mario lanza sang , che gelida manina. My dad used to listen carefully, between lanza and bjorlings version. He said very good but bjorlings voice was better. He loved opera. He died of cancer in 2008, a day before Giuseppe stefano. I love opera myself. This collection of these outstanding Tenors and sopranos, are so priceless! Great seeing Kathryn grayson in the photos of Mario lanzas film ' the toast of new Orleans. The only female soprano, still alive, that was in movies, is Ann Blyth. She'd be about 93 years of age. Those mario lanza films, showed some of those great sopranos. Dorothy Kirsten and ann blyth, Katherine grayson. Pity he didn't sing with Deanna durbin. I miss those films. They never put them on. Shame, such brilliant voices from the past. Great choice as usual Michael, kudos to you.👏👏👏👏👏👏🇮🇪👍...
Hello Isaiah, thanks for listening and for your interesting comment, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. Yes, I have heard Jussi sing Che gelida manina and. as with all his recordings it's wonderful and I certainly agree with your dad's opinion but Mario was a great singer who helped to introduce ordinary people, like myself, to opera. According to Jussi's widow Anna Lisa in her biography of Jussi, Mario invited him to his house and they spent the night drinking and singing, I wish I could have been a fly on the wall to watch the revelry. It is a shame that people today don't have the chance see those great old films, I wonder if they are on Netflix.
Thanks again for listening Isaiah.
@@michaelmcgrailengland Always a Pleasure Michael. 🇮🇪👏👏👏👏👏👏.
@@isaiahjohnston823 Thanks for listening again Isaiah, I'm glad that like the video.
Mario Lanza #1.
Thanks for listening and for your comment.
McCormack and in a way Tauber have both the old school way of singing. Wonderfully even of tone, but sometimes too little emotion. But McCormack ususally have more sensitivity IMO than this , perhaps the character Rodolpho didn't appeal to him. As for Tauber with the noble and pretty voice, I prefer a more floating version like the addictively spectacular voice of Luigi Alva. ua-cam.com/video/lyFOzexXIL8/v-deo.html
Thanks for listening and for your comment.
I included the McCormack and Tauber recordings because they are two of my favourite singers and, in my opinion, they perform the arias that they sing here perfectly. I also think that the Luigi Alva recording that you mention is, of course, excellent.
Thanks again for listening.
