I love donkeys, they are so smart. Our pregnant mare foaled on New Year's Day of 2000. It was late evening and I heard both of our donkeys putting out a distress scream so I went out to check and there was our new foal, not even out of the birthing sack and coyotes had surrounded the Corral. Our donkeys, Daisy and Dusty, stood guard, each on an opposite side of the mother pointing outward towards where the coyotes were to make sure that the mom was safe while she was cleaning her baby up. It was an amazing experience. What a lot of people don't know is that donkeys hate anything that's a canine, so even your dog would be attacked if it was not introduced to the donkey, so they knew it was family. They're Fearless they will go after the wolf, coyotes, and even chase the javelinas. That was many years ago, and unfortunately, they've both crossed the rainbow bridge, but they're still alive in our hearts. The foal is now 23 years old, living its best life with a woman who used to ride him at the facility we moved him to. We get a Christmas card every year from them.

I saw this guard donkey in Tijuana once. The way he looked these young ladies in their eyes, and watched them in such a loving embrace, almost brought a tear to my eye. I had no idea that such a bond could exist between ‘man’ and beast! As if on cue, the guard donkey would somehow sense that the coast is clear in what I can only assume was an explosion of the donkey ultimate sign of love he would provide endless amounts of wholesome milk as it to nurse these poor young frightened ladies back into good health!!! 10/10 Nature ❤ 🎉 🤘🏼
Donkeys are pretty common guard animals for herds. Llamas too, but with llamas you cannot have more than one per herd or the llamas will pair off and not integrate into the herd. Texas A&M is/was doing a massive study on the efficacy of Llamas as guard animals and from my recollection herds with llamas saw a ~10% increase in livestock survival.
Donkeys only job in farms is to guard. I’m confused how many people don’t know this. They’re very very protective and will trample/bite/toss/kick any wild canine animal and such. They eat coyotes for breakfast. Edit: Two jobs. In some places they carry heavy things too.
