    The way you described creativity really struck home for me: “creating is about problem solving. It’s about seeing the world, perceiving it as your own and coming up with a language or solution that helps improve or communicate or exchange ideas and information.” I am about to enter a PhD program for mathematics and this is the idea that I have to communicate to people time and time again of why I would enter such a “boring” profession. I have always adhered to the philosophy that math is inherently creative. It is a fully man made language to describe and expand upon the world around us (also 100% collaborative since it’s the product of thousands of years and the combined efforts of even more mathematicians), but I feel like it and other areas of creativity often get left out because they don’t fall into that “romanticized” version of creativity. While I might be standing on my little soap box about “why math is actually cool”, I hope to keep what you said in mind and learn to see what forms of creativity I had ignored at first (and learn about the creator too as a result). I have always loved your videos in that they definitely achieve the “timeless” feel and have almost a tangible sense of the identity and character of the creator.

      Wow your comment has me mind blown. I am doing a phd in physics and would never have made the link between Rachel’s video and my work. But having read your comment it really bridged that gap in my mind and actually motivates me a lot in my work. This is of those ones I’m gonna screenshot and constantly look back to!

      Aerospace engineering masters student here. I remember being a senior in high school taking Calc, physics, and Econ at the same time and being so excited about how they all intertwine. It felt like I was learning the secrets to the world. Math is full of poetry to those who look!!

      Same here! Rachel’s point on creativity hit home with what I’m going through in this season of my career. I’m in the field of UX and design consulting, I started as a junior thinking that I’ve to learn whatever my mentors are doing and subscribing to in order to be successful. And 5 years later as a senior now, I realised I’ll never be same as my mentors and what clients and colleagues value from me is my creativity, the one I built from my own lived experiences, my individuality. My assortment of skills learnt from my seniors, but also my own voice even if they aren’t replicas of the theories and best practices of the industry.
      When we open our hearts and minds to creativity and diversity, that’s when new possibilities and surprises happen. Some might be bombs some might be innovative solutions, but the point is they make us tingle with excitement, they make us go out of our comfort zones, they make us discover our potential, they make us realise we can be better.
      And it’s even more beautiful when we do it as a team, a community, watch the sparks fly between one another and build upon our individual experiences. Thank you Rachel for creating a resource, and a gathering spot for anyone who wants to experience creativity to find a starting point or an alternative perspective to continue their exploration. ❤️

      Lauren ~ thank you so, so much for sharing your thoughts. I haven't had time to reply but pinned it immediate when I saw because this is the exact empowerment worth cultivating. The idea of creativity can feel like a self-contained prision, when it should actually be an expansive ideaology. I agree with Sophia, math, physics, biology, chemistry is POETRY. I also have a BA in Econ and truly believe that the forced mechanics of calculus forced my brain to approach life as a puzzle and helped me think of everything different. Practicing 'non-romantic' creativity is the a nice mental framework to apply in 'romantic' creativity. It's the cross pollination school of thoughts.
      The conversation in this thread is so inspiring. Jasmine, I can *feel* your flow state when you're problem solving and going through a maze of ideas. I love it. That feeling is a literal vessel to apply to different worlds. The flow state matters, not the content. UGH!!!! YOU GUYS! JEILREFJSGLKADJGA YOU MAKE MY HEART FLUTTER!!!!!

    This made me tear up a little, thanks for putting so many beautiful things into words and sharing this. It's felt so fast and overwhelming which has left me creating much less than I ever have which has felt good and bad in some ways, or also maybe in a place of figuring out what feels unique to me in how I can continue to share without it feeling the way it has. Also, YES. so many things are creative! I feel like a lot of people online are suddenly feeling like the only way to be creative is through "content". In some ways it is, but the algorithm is death to creativity !!!!! blah thank u

    • @xoxopikapikaboo
      @xoxopikapikaboo 2 роки тому +1

      Algorithms are simply a jumping-off point where the real creative work begins. Technology-savvy visual artists and designers are already showing how algorithms can augment creativity rather than replace it, using equations to break new creative ground (e.g. Plummer-Fernandez’s work includes abstract sculptures and geometric vases created by repeating algorithms until shapes are formed that no human could ever imagine. The pieces show us what it looks like when artists and machines collaborate)
      p.s. I really love your content! keep doing you and you’re also a breath of fresh air just like @Rachel 💘 I know that you can find a balance on how to use your creativity to collaborate with algorithms for sure!!

    “How beautiful would the world be if we could pop into each other’s parts on the internet and it feels like an entirely unique experience wherever you go.”
    This totally reminds me of the neo-cities resurfacing online. The owners put their whole souls into their sites and pretty much every single one was born out of longing for ‘old internet’ or a completely authentic output space. They’re insane. And you can kinda only find them through wormholes and the little buttons they put on each other’s pages, so it feels like word of mouth.

    watched this at the perfect time. it was always so hard to articulate how i felt about slower consumption of media against the insane speed social media has taken it. you articulated beautifully and as a budding content creator on this platform, thank you! i needed this to not feel like i was going backwards as someone who prefers slower more thoughtful pieces.

  • @alanitaaaaa
    @alanitaaaaa 2 роки тому +20

    I also feel like this can be applied to the algorithmic approach to style I’ve noticed in the past couple of years. Now EVERYONE has to be sourcing archival pieces and has to have an extensive knowledge of approaching designers (especially as a teenager) but the entire thing lacks texture and sensuality. The individual pieces are cool?? I guess but there is something to clinical and forced about the approach to styling that’s been born out of tiktok. And if you are oppositional to dressing in that specific disjointed adidas slides with a pant skirt combo you don’t understand fashion. It’s all so truly pretentious and aggressive yet none of these people are legitimately stylish because there is no character. I’ve been wondering the past few years why online style felt so halloween costumish and I think it’s because we feel intense pressure to make a decision about ourselves and how we are perceived as quick as an algorithm makes the decision for us. We are in competition with an algorithmic beast and we don’t understand we won’t win. For millennia we have had to develop style through long processes of intervention and introspection, we aren’t psychologically prepared to engage with how quickly things are cascading now. By taking it slow and not psyching yourself out and realising swag is innate, if’s a lot easier to really inquire with yourself where your desires lie and what you are actually drawn to.

    • @thatschicblog
      @thatschicblog  2 роки тому +4

      what a brilliant musing about our sartorial blunders. i agree that the pressure to feel we need to be immediately defined takes away from the power of play. my friend was telling me about an article (that she forgot the source), about personal style really making a comeback. which is more of a revisit of attitude than it is an actual trend. interesting to see where we start to go as we're all feeling fatigued by our digital selves and are probing at our identities

    I’m a quiet viewer as well but I can’t help but thank you for baring your thoughts with us. Trust that I would listen to the uncut 44min version of this! You have a way with words, whether it’s speaking or writing. Simple, succinct and always thought provoking.
    I wrote down so many of your lines for future reflection. My favorite: “algorithms, AI, etc…rob us of a curious experience and thinking and philosophizing the world by ourselves, because everything is so convenient.” Agree 100%. The point isn’t to complain about convenience (which is an amazing human advancement) but how we let these developments dull our minds into complacency.
    You also perfectly articulated the overwhelming feeling of influx of information, but with it, the dwindling connection we have with each other on the internet. So happy you‘ve carved this special place that feels authentic, without having to say it is. It just is. This community is a testament to that 💌

      my favorite thought i've been flirting with this year about 'balance' is that balance is impossible. in fact, it takes much more effort to stay in one spot to sustain equality.
      instead, play around and make mistakes. sometimes we're really in our zones and sometimes things pull us out of it. important not to judge where you are in the process but letting it happen. when we lean too far in one direction, maybe it's time to try the total opposite method.

    3:47 I'm not sure I agree with that one. I believe that trying to follow a path that one has already successfully taken can actually be a faster way for one to achieve failure. I think that's one reason why so many people feel so anguished upon trying to make their own content.

    this is totally a brain dump but when you talked about seasons it would be amazing to see a series of videos from you like a season from a movie series. but not like a 31 days of vlogging etc maybe sth more flexible that works for you over a certain period of time that would touch upon a theme and make a cohesive narrative together. like your recent vlog series that I keep coming back to, it felt like it had this "rebirth" theme to me. these are exactly my immediate thoughts lol

    • @thatschicblog
      @thatschicblog  2 роки тому +9

      i really, really like this idea. seasonal content was a phrase i talked about in one of the refilms but it felt too formal. but the perception of my last videos being a sense of 'rebirth' is like... so validating to hear. it's giving me an idea how to actually organize my channel now, ty 💖

    I remember back in high school (2012), I wanted to start filming outfits and upload them to UA-cam. Like you said, there were barely any at the time. I was too scared and nervous to do it, but I regret so much never doing it. Nowadays everyone wants to be a content creator.

    Hi Rachel, 👋🏽
    I’ve always been a quieter viewer of yours and so impressed by your vulnerability & introspection that you share.
    The course looks AMAZING but I’m even more struck by that chunky book. It looks so fun! I’m wondering if you plan on selling it eventually, apart from the course? I would be one of the first to get it. Love myself a workbook.

    • @thatschicblog
      @thatschicblog  2 роки тому

      hi natalies 🪷 appreciate when we get to hear from the quite viewers :)
      the workbook is a lovely supplement to the course and essentially is the whole course, so we don't sell it separately. i believe tho, you can, but it's a hefty price. as hefty as a college textbook. i'd say if you're going to invest, might as well go through the whole course! thank you for your curiosity x

    Thank you so much for your words Rachel I always come away from your videos with creative sparks in my brain. I'd love to take the class! But I live in a different timezone and it wouldn't work out, is the book you showed nonetheless available?

      yes! the workbook comes with the course (which is online all the time). the digital retreat is a live supplement. sign up for the waitlist! i've been trying to advocate accommodation for european time zones but there hasn't been enough interest on that side of the globe ☺

    Okay, but your journey has been phenomenal to observe. Last night I literally watched your Paris vlogs for nostalgia and the pure enjoyment of you shouting "je suis fatigué"
    So, to see the new video notification was exciting.
    You've remained fluid, whilst giving yourself the room to retreat. It's really special 🙌🏽
    Btw, what is the duration of the class? I'd love to enroll, but I live in South Africa, and I'm afraid with the time difference I'll start yelling "je suis fatigué" 😭
