If you want to confidently lay down hihat grooves, you absolutely have to avoid getting your hands & sticks tangled up. Avoid stick clash with these 2 tricks - neither of which involves moving or raising your hihats (or playing open-handed!).

Great advice for something not many people talk about when it comes to basic hi-hat/snare/kick grooves.

Thanks for another great video, Stephen. The Sterling method works well for some grooves. It all depends on how high I want the left stick to move up. For „Rosanna“ however, I just do what Jeff Porcaro did: His left stick movement on the backbeat is quick, but not very high. He still gets a good cracking rim shot.
Noticed Charlie Watts used to do windshield trick.
I was looking for a Charlie Watts comment! A lot of the time Charlie would just not play the eighth note on the high hat when he was lifting the left hand stick for the snare hit he just stops playing the hi-hat it you can hear it in his play and it gives a unique sound to many of those songs
@edd7812 yes ,I noticed that too,kinda making it like a syncopated rhythm in a way .
I've been practicing holding my left stick in the traditional way because it gives me less clickage. Although I will give your method a try with matched grip. Another excellent video BTW 👏 👏 👏 👏

I am trying to learn a song which is really fast ( 150 bpm ) and it involves 8th note on the hi hat and i had to play a groove in snare drum at the 2 and 4 , so i placed the hi hat very low and close to the snare , now i am facing this issue ....i found this video really helpful

Yup, I'm running into stick clashes doing the purdy shuffle. I've noticed Keith Carlock shifts between the two right hand positions for the back beat. It's pretty interesting. I guess I need to get my right hand used to moving between the two!

The tough one for me is since I have a double bass pedal, the hat is not as close. When I need to do two handed 16ths on hats, it's a little rough when doing 'e' or 'a' snare hits with left hand. Not so much a clash issue as getting down and back without hitting the rim or getting caught up under the hats when coming back. This also makes me thing of "Message in a Bottle" when you try to do the overdubbed tom hits while riding on the hats. Pretty much requires reaching under the right arm out to the toms.

The "Aaron Sterling method" I haven't been implementing. The "Windshield wipers motion" method I do practice it regularly. I think it's become more natural for me. My sticks hardly clash except when I'm in the middle of a super crazy fill at a fast tempo
Are your hats mounted incredibly low, or does your stand have a super long rod?
I employ the monkey arm strategy. Then again, I play in a band of a more extreme genre and blast beats are very uncomfortable to play (for me at least) with the hi-hat as low as you have it. When I play slower beats and want more stick height, it's windshield wiper motion all the way, didn't know that was an unknown thing.
Just left up the hi hat and done,we have a distance to play conforble
I play trad grip and this hasn't been an issue
I like and appreciate your lessons, and my only feedback is less talk and more shop. As in workshop. Show me the money. Make it real. Slow and methodical is good but to much gets boring fast. Hope this helps because I do want more of what you have to offer. Cheers
