@@JohnnySins69XO the original speaker is unkown. It's an engineering saying. The point is anyone can waste tons of resources to build something that goes beyond the scope of what is necessary. An engineer has the expertise to design something that gets the job done without waste.
This is very interesting. After reading the description, the bridges are supposed to carry 2 people and break at 3 people(with the lightest design winning). Which I think is even more difficult than just making it as strong as possible.
Much more difficult. Finding a medium without trial and error is an interesting and clever concept
Definitely because making a bridge strong is hard but not as hard as making a bridge strong but not strong enough to hold a certain amount of weight(3 people) so it’s very challenging and that is what makes this challenge fun!
@@r0xdab0x96xo I am structural engineer with bridge engineering sepcialisation and I dont know if you are engineer but today we have such advance computer programs for calculations that it is not that hard at all. I always loved bridge building competitions because it is fun and teach you how to think and also you learn manual skills. BUT when you compare these '' models'' to real bridges there is very few things that connects them. I designed steel model that weight 50kg and with 5m span can take 1000kg and it will have 1,2mm deflection (max load would be at least 2000kg) So you See what proportions are in terms of weight to load. In real structure this ratio is much smaller and for Road cable stayed bridges for example it is around 0,25 (load/bridge weight). I myself designed 300m cable stayed Road bridge at my master degree diploma 😀
Interesting
Thanks for sharing!
That red bull bridge design was impressive

For anyone saying the bridges are flaws, then its because they kind of have to be. The rule of the challenge is that the bridge should support 2 people and break when the third person comes on. And i think the team that build the lightest bridge that fits the rules above wins

poidial true, their bridge already had more people than 3 (which was the point: for your bridge to break at 3 people) so she probably helped out the team. I’m pretty sure all of the people had little sneaky things they did to help it break

Even though the last bridge broke with an impressive amount of payload before failure, and although, at first, i thought that the bridge that can withstand the most payload within certain bridge building construction parameters govern by the contest was considered the winner, I realized after reading the description that it's carry two personnel, fail with three and the lightest bridge wins. This contest is awesome in the learning process. Would've been neat to see a suspension bridge but these were all beautifully crafted bridges from some great candidates. Ohhh so the bridge is *supposed* to break with the 3rd person! What a strange criteria 😂😂
It is to determine who have a better understanding about bridge structures
The educational system lacks failure. It punishes you for failing, but it is there where the most learning occurs.
So to have a project designed to fail, and understand how and why it’ll fail is the unlearned half of the learning function.
Understand how something will succeed isn’t all there is to it, because life itself isn’t fully designed to succeed.
it does make sense. Anybody can throw as many resources they can and simply go overkill and waste money on something that isnt necessary. This is to evaluate who can make it that its the most efficient for the usage case required

I was thinking the last group was the winner, until I read the rules: carry two people and break with three. So the earlier bridges actually scored more points for breaking when the 3rd person got on.

This is what college kids should be doing, engineering our future and not our social issues, leave that up for the more wise. Great vid
Too Shmart The "more wise"? Like the clowns who want to rob from the poor and middle class to make themselves richer? Maybe you should leave commenting to the "more wise".
Marque Lethenstrom Obamacare is robbing from the poor and middle class.
The more wise? Why should they be deciding how society functions when they are gonna die in 10 years? They don't give a shit about society anymore.
Maybe if they have engineering degrees?? Not sure why you are demanding what type of career choices they make. Not to mention you bring up "the more wise" as if society isn't already being run by idiots. Everyone has the right to speak up. You don't like it? Then move to NK where the "wisest" and most "godly" man on the planet gets to make all of your decisions for you.
the fact this got 100+ likes is scary. it barely makes sense. "the more wise" dude anyone whos creating or getting involved in social issues isnt wise at all.
