  • Welcome to another episode of Natural World Facts!
This fact file is all about Reindeer in the series Mammals. Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!
Reindeer (or Caribou) belong to the deer family, which also includes deer, elk and moose. However, reindeer are the only type of deer in which both the males and females grow antlers. These antlers fall off and regrow every year. A male's can grow up to 51 inches (130 centimeters) long, making them very useful when fighting. Male reindeer lose their antlers in November, but females keep theirs much longer. This means that Santa’s reindeer must have all been female, since they are depicted as having horns on December 24.
Reindeer can be found in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, northern Europe and northern Asia in tundra, mountains and woodland habitats. They are very social creatures, and feed, travel and rest in herds.
Reindeer are herbivores, which means they only eat vegetation. Their diet consists of herbs, ferns, mosses, grasses, shoots, fungi and leaves. In the winter, reindeer must dig through the snow with their antlers to find food.
Although these animals can’t fly, they can reach speeds of up to 50 mph (80 km/h) when running.
Reindeer are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red-list for threatened species, due to a 40 percent decline in population over the past 21 to 27 years.

Reindeer are entirely covered by fur, even their noses are furry. This fur insulates them so well that they can lay on snow without melting it.

Hi Leo. Wonderful video. I offer one extra tidbit of information: I just read that the Indigenous word "cariboo" means "scratches the snow", which is mostly done with their wide hooves.
I have also seen the female use their antlers in winter, to rake the ground after 'shoveling' with their hooves.

Actually, moose and elk are deer, a deer is any ungulate that belongs to the family Cervidae, deer are only the second largest and second most diverse family of living ungulates after the bovids, all deer have antlers, there are over 62 extant species within 20 genera and two subfamilies, there are also seven tribes of deer, Odocoileini (contains 1 genus: Odocoileus), Ozotocerotini (contains 5 genera: Mazama, Pudu, Blastocerus, Ozotoceros, and Hippocamelus), Muntiacini (contains 2 genera: Elaphodus and Muntiacus), Rangiferini (contains 1 genus: Rangifer), Capreolini (contains 2 genera: Alces and Capreolus), Megalocerotini (contains 4 genera: Axis, Hyelaphus, Ocellelaphus, and Dama), and Cervini (contains 5 genera: Rucervus, Rusa, Cervus, Przewalskium, and Elaphurus), the former two tribes are included within the subfamily Odocoileinae while the latter five tribes belong to the subfamily Cervinae.
