  • Discover what happens inside your body as you fast for 3 days, 5 days, and 7 days. Intermittent fasting has many benefits, but it also has some drawbacks. Extended water fasting can result in some negative effects. But how long does it take for fasting to cause muscle loss, headaches, and extreme hunger? Find out what happens when you stop eating.

After you eat a meal, your body enters an anabolic state, where food is broken down into simpler molecules and used as fuel so your organs can function properly. An organ in the abdomen known as the pancreas produces insulin which is a hormone that regulates the process of breaking down and metabolizing primarily carbohydrates but also protein. So insulin is the hormone that helps the cells absorb the glucose found in the bloodstream after a meal. Dietary fat, on the other hand, is broken down into fatty acids which are used by the body for energy as well as for many different biological processes like testosterone production for example. Excess fatty acids are converted back to triglycerides and then most of those triglycerides are stored in adipose tissue otherwise known as body fat.
Meanwhile, excess carbohydrates from that meal will first get converted into glycogen which is a string of glucose molecules that can be stored and used later. Glycogen is mostly stored in the liver and your muscles. Since there's a biological limit to how much glycogen a person can store, once that limit is reached the rest of the excess energy is converted into triglycerides and stored as adipose tissue, otherwise known as body fat. This is the routine process that our bodies go through when we eat throughout the day. But what would happen if you chose to stop eating for 3 days straight?
Well after about 6-10 hours of fasting, most of the glucose that's still circulating in your bloodstream will be used for fuel. At that point, your body will start shifting from an anabolic to a catabolic state. Since it's not receiving any new nutrients, your body has to start using its own glycogen reserves to fuel itself. It's at that point that the pancreas secretes glucagon. Glucagon is not the same as glycogen or glucose. It's actually a hormone, and one of its jobs is to signal your body to release glycogen and fatty acids. Also if your last meal was low in carbohydrates your body may start producing ketones as an energy source within this early stage of fasting. Ketones are chemicals produced by the liver when fat cells are converted into fatty acids. So in general during those first 6 hours, your blood glucose levels will start to elevate and then they'll gradually decline. Meanwhile, your ketone levels will do pretty much the opposite. They'll gradually rise, especially after approximately the 10th hour of fasting. (1)
Now before you ever hit that 10th-hour mark, if you’re accustomed to eating three meals per day or you regularly eat a high-carb diet you'll probably experience hunger and low energy levels. If you ignore this hunger and continue fasting for at least 10 hours your body will start to increase the levels of a hormone produced by the pituitary gland called Human Growth Hormone otherwise known as (HGH). Fasting can actually increase HGH just as effectively as exercise, stress, and very low blood sugar, also known as hypoglycemia. (2) HGH plays an important role in the fasting process because it's associated with enhanced muscle growth, exercise performance, better body composition, a faster metabolic rate, stronger immunity, and faster recovery from injuries. (3) Although HGH is unlikely to lead to muscle growth in the absence of nutrients while you're fasting, it's believed to be responsible for delaying the breakdown of muscle. So it helps prevent muscle loss while fasting. It does this by stimulating metabolic processes such as protein synthesis and muscle tissue repair. According to research, the longer you fast, the more HGH you'll produce. For example, a study found that fasting for just two days increased HGH production by 5X. (4)
Now at around 12-16 hours in, depending on how many carbs you normally eat, your body will continue to deplete its glycogen stores, while also increasing its reliance on ketone bodies. (5) The benefits of this initial period of fasting have been well documented because multiple studies have been designed to observe people fasting for Ramadan, which is a Muslim holiday where people stop eating food from dawn to sunset, every day for one month. The studies on this topic all provide an excellent overview of the benefits that fasting for 10-17 hours daily has on the human body. According to the findings, there's great improvement in weight management, digestion, and cholesterol levels. (6). Also, some studies show a significant decrease in inflammation markers associated with a number of diseases such as homocysteine, C-reactive protein...

I’ve done 3 day fasts multiple times and the benefits are real. Particularly noticeable is the change in skin, weight loss, and the autophagy. It does feel like a total reset and healing of the body in a short time. I think this the way humans always lived and are meant to live. Our bodies were made to thrive in feast/famine but now we are always in “feast” mode with an excess of food everywhere, every day, multiple times a day. On top of that what many eat is pure junk and sugar is the worst for our health. There is healing in famine mode as well!

I started fasting in June 2022. I was 220 lbs., blood pressure 140/95 and borderline type 2 diabetic. As of today, I'm 180lbs BP 119/75 and no longer on the radar of type 2 diabetic. I'm 47 years old and fasting got me to understand my body especially in what I eat. I now eat 4 hours in a day and every 2 weeks I'll pull off a 48 hour. I will continue to do this until I reach my goal of 160lbs. The best thing about fasting is that it costs nothing to do. No miracle drugs, shakes nothing. I'm living like my great grandfather did.

I’m on day 4. I haven’t decided how long to go. I lost 25 lbs a few years ago and was in the best shape of my adult life. I let 20 lbs return over 3 years. I needed to get control. I have used Intermittent fasting for years, but I didn’t restrict the amount or kinds of foods and I paid the price. So far, I’m down 8 lbs., clothes fit better, I have more mental acuity, my self-control in other areas has improved, I sleep better, shoulder pain from an injury a couple months ago has subsided, I can get off the couch without having to move slowly because of stiffness discomfort, and my mood has improved. I may go up to 20 days, but will likely stop after 5 and restart after 3 days if limited eating on a IF 16:8 pattern. Thank you for the encouragement and the cautions.

I have done a 21 day fast. the first three days were the hardest, then hunger went away... yes, really. (from day 4: I could be at a table with other folks eating and it did not bother me). blood pressure dropped... cholesterol dropped... leaving type 2 diabetes behind... joint pain disappeared... of course, significant fat loss (260 to 230... more precisely to 260 to 222 to 230)... concentration improved dramatically... able to focus for longer.... irritability decreased (outside of first three days when I was hangry)...
This is a great video for concise delivery of info... based on my experience (no, i am not a Dr. and I am only one data point) I think it mistakenly undersells longer (week or more) fasts (particularly for those with more fat) because I felt great for most of the 21 days. I got a headache on day 21 and decided to stop (not sure if headache was caused by fasting... it could have been... so that is why I stopped... if it was not, I wish I had kept going...).
This may sound strange to someone who has not done a fast, but it felt great to be on that fast.... and great when it was over (very important based on my experience: slowly re-introduce easy to digest foods if you go that long... i limited to clear broths and vegetables for first few days)... i have done other, shorter fasts (mostly in the week long timer frame... one was two weeks) because of the success of that fast...
For me, there is lots of weight loss in the first few days, and then it slows down. After multiple fasts, I think the real weight loss for me is about a pound a day (becasue you do put on some weight when you start eating again)... but the real victory is the increased energy, happier persona, lower blood pressure, no more type 2 diabetes medication, no more ADHD medication, no more ibuprofen every day, and real food tastes great again (my taste buds were reset so fruits and vegetables taste better than processed foods... ).
Note: I also gave up caffeine during that time and that was harder than the first two days of the fast (vicious caffeine withdrawal headache on day 2, then went away on day 3).
I could write a lot more... but his is probably already too long to read

This is the best video I’ve seen after reading 10 years about autophagy. Congrats. I did autophagy for the first time in September 2021 with a burn out after covid. I was gonna go for 3 days. The first 2 days were a bit tricky but after 36 hours you can really feel the autophagy kicking in. I had never felt so much energy in my body ever since I’m born (all the contrary one would expect). Clear thinking, laser sharp eyes, even your smell becomes so sharp. The next thing I found myself doing push-ups and took the kettle bell and then took my mountain bike for a ride. So then I decided…wow that goes well, let’s extend to 7 days. The only reason I broke the fasting after one week is social pressure (friends employees and family being in disbelieve). So u need to be careful when you reboot your system. I did it again one month ago (7 days) and decided to remain in keto mode. It’s simply amazing since I don’t crave for snacks or stuff and I eat once or twice a day. Constant energy levels are the secret since your insulin levels keep down. That means that I keep on loosing fat while my intake of proteins promotes my muscle mass. This video is real, I can testify. And I’ve already sent it to numerous friends. Thank

I have just completed a 72 hour fast, it got really hard after 60 hours and I was not able to think properly while working. It felt like having constant confusion when i reached the 60-72 hours of fasting. Some videos said not to eat too much after completing the fast so I ended my fast by eating a little. I ended my fast exactly at the 72 hour mark but light headedness and confusion lasted until the end of the fourth day. After the fast, i feel great. I feel a dramatic decrease in anxiety and depression. I lost so much weight and my skin and face looks healthier and younger. I also feel a lot more energy and don’t have as many urges to eat throughout the day.

A true spiritual fast is not just food centered. Its to only meditate, pray, read, & control all desires, addictions, bad emotions, all bad thoughts, lusts of the flesh & body & eyes,& just being consistent in his spirit & word in meditation. Not allowing any outer disturbances, to emotions, mind or spirit. A true fast is to get away from all things of the world, & its very, very, powerful to break it all off & become closer to spiritual. Its so powerful, that what many think they know of fasting, is minimal, compared to knowing the real truth & power in fasting...

The longest I have fasted is 21 days and usually do a couple of 14 day fasts a year ( I drink a lot of water while fasting), I work out, eat healthy (I’m in Italy) but fasting is the healthiest thing I do, after 3 days it becomes easier and i definitely feel better.
The hardest thing is not the fasting itself but being around people (as in the comments) telling you how bad it is for you and trying to guilt-trip you into eating. Luckily for me my wife is very supportive and doesn’t give me a hard time about it, especially as she can see first hand how much better I look and feel, I have learned to tell nobody else but her, in fact, I tell people the secret to fasting is keeping your mouth shut. I’m 72, on no medications and feel good. Ciao.

Experienced lots of benefits, from eliminating a persistent shoulder ache, to moderate weight loss (not an issue for me, but a nice additional benefit).
About six months later, I did a 4 day fast, barely made it to that 4th day I think 3 days is good, every six months or so, as part of a healthy maintenance program that includes whole food vegan lifestyle, coffee no problem, occasional beer and wine. Mostly have spring water, with a squeeze of fresh lemon and apple cider vinegar as my beverage of choice with meals. 💪💪

The longer fasting period I’ve done has been of 60 hours for 2 times, the last was one week ago to “clean a bit my body” in the middle of my bulking phase (at 3600 kcals per day, I’m a well trained person of 73 kg and 177cm) and both times I feel very good and with no hunger (a part from the little span between the 12 and the 14 hours after I started).
In the past I’ve tried fasting for 24 or 48 hours and I have had the same sensations of no hungry a part from that little span between the 12 and the 14 hours, and also I have done during my definition phase the intermittent fasting 16-8 for 4 months from April to July without any problems.
I really recommend intermittent fasting to everyone who wants to lose weight easier, especially considering all the benefits this method has on our body!

I have found that when I fast for three days, it becomes easier to avoid garbage foods. The urge for sugar and salty foods goes away, and when I consume salty foods, I can feel the negative effects immediately inside my body. When I do fast, I continue with water only. I don't like to go beyond 5 days as that's generally when energy falls off and I become weak minded. When I break my fast, I start with a few nonsalted pistachios and half of a green apple. I sometimes add one cup of old-fashioned oatmeal, no sugar added. I stick with that diet for about three days, then slowly add more solid foods into my diet. After about two weeks or a maximum of one month, I do another fast cycle. My fasting never goes more than five days. I find the more I fast, the easier it is to avoid garbage foods as my body absolutely hates junk foods, and I can't even stand the smell of crappie foods.

Keeping nutrients is important, mosti issues after some time come from simply a lack of salt, healthy like seasalt. With coffee just watch out for cafeïne, since this can impair sleep, and also coffee can trigger salt loss or something like that can't remember exactly. Oh and salt does not trigger insuline, and break the fast. Some nutrient pakcages do contain sugar however for taste, and that will break a fast

If you're fit and healthy, no matter what age, I would aim for 72 hours. If you're overweight and have a level which you can't break lower, go with 96 hours. In both cases, try to add a few days of OMAD (One meal a day, basically a 24h fasting) as an extension of the fasting. Eat normal (or less than normal if you are going overweight) for some weeks and try to repeat every month. Sometimes you may have the feeling you want to do a fast, just start it! If you later feel that it is not the right week for fasting, just cancel and try again when you feel for it again! Sometimes I feel 'bad' after a day or two, so I cancel. Then it was at least a short fast, better than nothing! After you get used to fasting, it becomes easier each time. 72h has become easy, 96 requires some discipline and sometimes I cancel at 92 😂. Recently I have the feeling I could go even a day longer. But, at some point, this adds a few negative effects. For anything longer than 120h, definitely get a doctor's check whether you are able to withstand depletion of all kinds of resources.

My sight got a bit blurry after being under fluorescent lights for extended periods of time, so I would go outside and focus on objects close then far away. I would concentrate on what I was looking at and when I could see it better I would switch back and forth. If you are experiencing possible cataract build up no worries, I got that beat too. My mom got rid of hers by dropping castor oil in her eyes every night before she went to sleep. It took a couple years, but her eyes looked like brand new again. I lost 40 kilos in a little over 5 months with OMAD (one meal a day) When i did eat, i ate a diet low in carbs, (20g) but otherwise no calorie couting or feelings of hunger once my body had got over the 'Pavlov's dog' stage.
This weight loss was several years ago, but here is the wonderful thing; I have never put on an ounce of weight since !! ...
.I still eat OMAD, but if i want to spoil myself on weekends or special occasions I do so. If i want wine or a dessert I have some....but, my body has 24 hours to rid itself of my indulgence and then return to its primary functions. The really cool thing is, one tends to lose cravings for sweetness and stodge, anyway..
Apart from all of the excellent informative biological advice you have given here... it seems to me, this fasting business quite simple. It returns the body to its natural function of repair and rejeuvination.., doing what nature intended, and is equipped to deal with,by not having to divert all of its attentions to digestion.
Before I found this FREE solution to my weight and woes, I had terrible eczema, couldn't sleep, and chronic pain which the doctors put down to 'old age' and offered me all sorts of drugs, the side effects being worse than the complaints.
I am 76, and now have neither pain, eczema, insomnia OR a doctor.
The medical profession is still pushing the five fruits and vegetables, three meals a day and two snacks mantra from the scientifically erroneous and misleading 'Food Pyramid' which in my opinion, coincides and is the cause of the rise in illness and obesity since it was launched upon an unsuspecting public... .

For about 5 years, I fell ito an intermittent fasting routine - eating healthily in the evening and skipping breakfast and lunch. I did and still do hydrate regularly though, roughly 1-2 liters a day.
In the same period, I did notice:
) Low suspeptibility to colds / quick recovery from ilnesses
) low maintenance requirement for body weight
) low appetite during the day (hungry in the evening only)
) I lost about 10kg in about 8-12 months and stabalised at the centerpoint of the BMi index for my height.
I can easily vouch for the benefits of intermittent fasting, but it is a routine you have to enforce in yourself and is hard to start and maintain.
I now supplement with high carb weight gain protein powders to gain a few kilo's ahead of an excersise routine I am starting for prep of a half marathon this year. Any cardio / muscle gain excersise has to be planned for when on a consistent fasting routine, as the body will need new reserves for repair of muscle tissue and of course for fuel during excersise and recovery.
    Just my two cents!

This is starting to make so much more sense to me. We evolved eating a certain way. Hunting and foraging had our bodies evolving systems to handle longer periods with no food. If we lost muscle right away, we wouldn't be able to hunt for those meals while hungry. This makes me want to introduce more habits into my daily life that mimic ancient human lifestyles.

I am currently on my 2nd day of water fasting. This is the 3rd time i am doing water fasting this year. I was being bothered by uncontrol weight gain over the past 8yrs.
My peak was at almost 190kg at one point. Having knee issue and back issue. Can't walk for a long time or even stand at the same spot for 5min.
I came across water fasting and did my first water fast in mar. The hunger went off by the 3rd day and able to focus better than usual. NIght time able to sleep better. On the 11th day, muscle ache appeared and i stop the water fasting (losing a good 18kg). My back issue disappeared and I was able to walk around for a good 10km, my leg was shaking after the walk.
Of course. After you break water fast and slowly eat back normal. Some of the weight will come back and loss muscle mass. But not to worry, you are losing the sugar that are trap in you muscle and with proper protien food intake. You can build up better muscle with greater strength.
I did another 9 days water fast in early July. And I feel great after that and my shirt went down one size. I also did a 2hrs hiking without any issue after the hike.
Most importantly on the water fast, you must know when to breakfast when you body is showing you sign. I always use muscle ache as an indication.
So far I have lost around 35 from water fasting and intermittent fasting throughout the 9mths.
Let see where this 3rd fasting will brings me

I've completed a 72 hour fast recently because my sciatica pain was flaring up and my gut was bloated. I only drank water, tea, Propel (electrolytes) and black coffee and after my 48 hour mark my back and leg nerve pain was reduced by over 90%. I kept the fast an addition 24 hours to make sure my pain was truly gone. I didn't experience being tired or sugar shakes but I did experience insomnia. I only experienced approximately 10 hours of sleep during the 3 nights I fasted. A 72 hour fast is great opportunity to do some colon cleansing as well as detoxing from alcohol and junk food.

Be very, very careful when you break it:
      Bone broth
      Wait an hour
      Greek Yogurt
      Wait an hour
      Steamed vegetables

      Be patient.
