EPISODE FIVE Calaloo *Vegetarian* (Trinidad Sunday Lunch Series) - Mom's Trini Cooking

- Hi everyone, episode five of my #trindadsundaylunch series is a vegetarian take on calaloo. Feel free to add any meats while your calaloo is boiling is you prefer, you will be surprised how much flavour is in this recipe without any meat!
For this recipe you will need:
I bunch of Dasheen leaves or 20-30 leaves
10-12 small okro
1.5 cups pumpkin
1 head of garlic
3 small onion
1 hot pepper
8 pimento
1 or 2 tbsp golden ray
1 can coconut cream or cream from one fresh coconut
salt to taste
black pepper to taste
2 cups water

It makes such a difference in flavour, especially since we are enotnsuinf any kind of meat or seafood in it

Never did it that way I usually boil it but its always good to know a different method.
true, I grew up with us boiling it. But because it's vegetarian I wanted as much flavour as possible. Try it this way and let me know what you think.

absoloutely, add it if you like it!
Looks delicious! It’s difficult for me to find dasheen bush here in FL.
Use frozen chopped spinach and frozen cut okras. The frozen spinach can be 16 ozs or 12ozs. You add two okras to 1 spinach for a large portion. For a small portion you use half the spinach and 1 bag of okra. Then follow the recipe.
you can use frozen spinach instead!
Look for taro root leaves in indian stores. Dasheen is same as taro root

Yes, the real thing. What do u do with the stems?
I cut them up and use them as well. I just didn't use it in this video. You can use the entire leaf and stem!

Mom's Trini Cooking Do we peel the stem? I feel I remember my parents peeling it but it's been over 25 years since we leave Trinidad
We don't have dasheen in Germany.Can I use fresh spinach for this recipe? Greetings from a German vegetarian 💖
You can but it cooks very different than dasheen. I would recommend cooking everything and adding the spinach near the end of cooking and tripling the amount I suggested because it wilts down A LOT
