the sheer missile spam is INSANE it literally turns any fight into a touhou game
Im certain the Penelope or the Xi could wipe out an entire city using just their missiles
also Xi has Psycommu Funnel Missiles, although this clip only shows regular missiles that launch in the front, with the former launching from the Xi's back.
@@nicoliedolpot7213 u might be suprise if u pause at some frame you will see a few funnel missile along the regular missile that XI fire.
@@flyhigh6047dk why but your comment with that pfp makes the comment kinda comedical. 😂
If this surprise you, look at Macross lol
By the gods the sounds coming out of the flying Penelope is almost alien. And the framerate on Lane’s movements in the end is too damn high that he almost looked 3D. All this framerate while maintaining that detailed art style consistent. I can’t imagine the money and effort their burned for this movie… But it’s worth it, because I’m watching HF for the fourth time. Can’t get enough of that animation quality man. Looking forward to Son of Bright.
I sometimes have to ask myself wich part of the scenes in this movie is 3D and 2D LOL
buddy its sunrise studio, one of the veterans in the animation industry they have been doing gundam before you were just swimming in your dad's nutsack lol. now you throw bandais fu money on top of that
And the beam rifle ASMR trademark on every series, don't forget that. Here are the one of my faves so far...
1. Green GN particles powered beam rifles from 00.
2. Unicorn's Beam Magnum
3. Pistols from 00 (the ones used by the Gundam Meisters)
4. XI and Odysseus Beam Rifles and Funnel Missiles in this movie (Penelope without the Fixed Flight equipment)
5. That Shield deflecting sound from WFM as well as Aerial's Beam rifle and Bit Staves.
If I recall the technique is called rotoscoping. Been using it for decades to get life-like movement. It's where they specifically animate over live action models doing the motions. For actual 3D effects like Gollum or King Kong, the equivalent is MoCap. Hathaway's Flash uses a fairly good deal of rotoscoping, though never quite to the same effect in this scene, as it usually looks out of place to how they move otherwise, or anime in general, which doesn't tend to use the technique.
@@onigojira It's both the combination of rotoscoping and 3D previz........usually when the camera turns around inside the cockpit, they built the 3D model for the whole stuff including the character and then they trace the line. Maybe some of you didn't know but Disney's old stuff like Snow White actually used rotoscoping....ALOT!! That's why they asked the actors to act using the same outfit as the characters.
Man I just love these punchy sound effects. I hope they keep them for future Gundam series
Man it’s so rare to see missile during combat that’s actually useful
In the novel they were psychommu guided missiles.
Basically imagine funnels but instead of having the complexity of a beam gun and vernier thrusters they are simply standard anti-MS missiles with psycho receivers in the warhead package. Both the Xi and Odysseus Gundam’s have a psychoframe cockit as well.
That said one thing about the novel that I don’t understand is how Lane Aime and Hathaway could use them. It’s explicitly stated in the novels that Hathaway is an old type. They don’t outright say Lane Aime is an old type but it’s heavily inferred.
I’m thinking Tomino forgot his technology rule set for the novel series. But that’s been fixed in the movie since Hathaway is obviously a Newtype (he gets the dings and the visions of animated Newtypes) and I’m assuming Lane Aime is as well.
@@OrtadragoonX I thought some people can converted to newtype if they spent long enough in space lol if that’s not the case then NT movie is fucked up
As technologies develop, reliance on newtypes to make these machines functions probably isnt needed anymore.
I believe those were funnel missiles
@OrtadragoonX I remember reading some suits had capabilities that allow non-newtypes to have similar abilities/capabilities through technology. Think one that had something like that was the giant zeon mobile armor in stardust memory at the end
The actual moment of "on your left" happened in gundam world.
The fact that the battle ended within a short amount of time really tell how scary war is, especially with 20+meters warmachines.. Keep the realistic aspect of the movie too. I hope I could see more UC timeline fight with animation like this, imagine CCA movie with this animation
Remake old series with new graphics like UC gundams + CCA, is what I'm waiting for!
i love the realism they brought into this film . all the collateral damage that comes from being careless and just flying or hovering over areas with combustible terrain . . and then all the shells that end up being just dumped onto random people , some even getting killed . they not messing around in this one and pay really good attention to almost every detail you can think of . . this is as good as unicorn :)
@@Bloodark124 i hopefully they remaster zeta w cgi
I mean, fight ending quickly is the realistic part and it should happen more often, you won't see protracted gunfights IRL, and especially not in open terrain
Same goes for fencing, it's ended in 1-3 bouts really, but in Gundam it can take quarter of the episode
they gonna release movie with full CGI on Netflix soon brah
This scene is purest Gundam confrontation, distilled and served to the audience with uncompromising vision and authenticity. No plot armour in play required; the tactics deployed were truly inspired and yet perfect choice in the low light, the flip reaction then drop to ocean, creating instant obfuscation using the only accessible environmental resource for cover and then launching the old beam rifle trick a target lure. Mafty is RANKED, and fights with his brain not his anger.
Finally Hathaway gets his due respect.
To be fair a old type stands no chance against a new type without SERIOUS experience. If Hathaway is a new type that is. And if he isn’t then I scratch this to the Penelope pilots arrogance.
I love the sound effects used for these 2 monster gundams. Also, this battle should have been a great deal longer
I think this is enough. Long battles usually mean the characters have something important to say to each other.
@@haihuynh8772 idk. I would've liked to seem more of a gundam vs gundam scene. Beam saber Duel or something lol
I disagree this is a very grounded approach to this fight. In reality these MS would not be beam spamming. It would be quick and efficient like a dog fight with fighter jets
@@douggoins2960 The Penelope can barely raise its arm. That oversized bitch isn't winning with a beam saber.
this was already long enough, in the novel first battle between Xi and Penelope ended extremely quick
Love the fact that the clips shows what it's like to actually be inside a mobile suit when a fight's going on. The muffled sounds, the creaking interior, the constant sound cues and alarms.
mechanical skill vs battle iq. penelopes pilot may have better handling skills but Mafty is just a genius in so many ways
its more like amuro ray battle skill
Experience in battle
Considering that Mafty is Hathaway Noa, and thus a veteran of Char's Rebellion and a practiced mobile suit pilot, it makes sense that he'd win that sort of fight. He's literally handled next-gen mobile suits in active combat, so he knows what to expect. After all, he survived the best Zeon could throw at him.
Bro Hathaway literally is best pilot in UC since amuro went missing theres no beating him easy dude survived beside amuro thats big G. They better do hathaway right thats the golden kid after chars and amuro
@@Meteorknite kamille is still alive (either comatose or retired based on timeline) and judau is at Jupiter with the gump and shiro balls of steel amada is also retired
Can’t get enough of this. I love how they went with missile for the finisher and refrain from 10 minute beam spamming. Both side were zoned in, dead serious, and went all out, I like that. Not to mention the sound design and movements of the two absolute units. That Xi flip and Penelope Minovsky flight system sound effect is just alien. Makes an otherwise “bad” physics seems believable in the context of the series. And did I mention missiles? We need more missiles in Gundam, on screen, that actually has impact.
Definitely, how many times fights are decided with missiles battle, not that often, at least in the main/final battles of the series. Its usually by beam sabers, rifles, or weird newtype bull, or some crazy aoe weapons
Because beam weapons are much deadlier. They gonna melt any armor in seconds and those aren't any missiles, they are funnels. Ain't no way Lane gonna dodge that. Hoping to get both kits soon
@@nana3195you downplay Penelope.
@@giornogiovannatheultimateb8553To be fair to the Penelope, Lane is a mediocre pilot. He could barely even keep up with it. A good pilot can make use of a bad machine, but a good machine can only go so far with a bad pilot.
@@bentwineham1986 imaging yazan in Penelope.
I love how there were so many missiles and funnels being shot at The Penelope, that even the Vulcan pods couldn't keep up with the barrage.
Exactly! There's alot of little details like that in the movie, making it more realistic
Even funnier, Penelope is supposed to have more of those.
The scene truly feels like an evolved version of Gundam X Ace Combat.
I was about to say how "jet like" the combat in the movie was
The cockpit UI for this movie is goat🔥
One of the best, if not the best mobile suit fights I've ever watched.
I don’t know if anything will beat Thunderbolt and the Psycho Zaku but this is a damn nice fight :)
Eh, I think the Messer vs Gustav Karl fight was better in this movie
ua-cam.com/video/Vs2piSWfofQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=BandaiNamcoEntertainmentAmerica
This whole movie (this scene especially) feels exactly how it would “actually” be in a mobile suit fight. Feels like how modern day fighter jets would take on one another.
Well he definitely learned a move or two from Amuro
Hathaway must have overloaded the hell out of that beam rifle for him to be able to launch it far away in a straight path with its own recoil and cause a very large explosion when it got hit by the Penelope
Aha! Nice explanation, for some reason this mystery is in my mind since I saw it. Now it is solved :)
How do beam rifles even have recoil?
@@AWholeLegionary Expansion of air particles in front of the muzzle caused by being superheated when a beam weapon is fired.
@@TheFreakedoutduck is that real science cause im not really smart in sciences field.
@@Asphyx12 honestly I just made it up, but it sounds right.
Penelope's sound design is just... majestic.
The reason why this scene is dark is because Hathaway took advantage of the night darkness to shoot down Lane.
Imagine, Hathaway's tactics don't work in a day light.
So the director choose to trick us also.
Because both of them are using minovaky flight systems, the area they are in is always saturated with minovaky particles that makes most sensors like RADAR useless. If you pay attention, my favorite detail is that everything is using visual recognition. When the pow was falling - Xi was going crazy because this flying object was heading towards him and it can barely see it's a person with a flashlight. Because the scene was so dark, the penelopes cameras and such warning system didn't alert Lane of the fact he was right there.
Lane aime is to arrogant not to use inferred or night vision system on his mobile suit cockpit. He's hoping that he can best Hathaway on a dog fight in the dark and end up getting whooped by funnel missiles.
I thought it was to hide imperfections of the CG they used💀
I'm not terribly upset that this fight in particular is this short as much as the fact that the Xi Gundam is hardly featured in this first movie at all. Political intrigue and dialog is the bulk of this film but I really hope Son of Bright brings back the action to balance it out more. And as sexy as it was to hear the "classic" OYW sounds effects in Gundam Unicorn, the brand new sounds coming from these two gargantuan Gundams is heavenly.
Boy if Penelope didn't also have Minovsky craft thus allowing the pilot to fire the vulcans while flying backwards, it would have been the end for them right then and there.
Edit: although I assume in that case Odysseus Gundam would be on a Kessaria like the Gustav Karls, which would barely change things considering there's still no way to compete with free flight.
I wish all Gundam series in the future will be like this or even much better animation, insane sound effect, destruction and animation.
Did anyone notice that the missile lauch sounds are actually taken from fighter's defensive flares?
i did notice that and i thought that Hathaway was launching countermeasures when Lain first fires at him.
I guess in this situation, it's appropriate to apply the phrase, "get rekt noob"
A true "GG EZ" moment
The best gundam, definitely not for starters :)

I didn't notice until I read your comment. Very insightful
@@NetScourge I think it was a flare he launched (which is why the water is so bright) after he descends when Lane chases, but before he ascends and strafes, I think he shoots it with his beam rifle to force Lane's attention to it, then ascends and strafes around him as he follows it to the bright light in the water.
best fight. best movie. best gundam
Mixing regular missiles with funnel missiles, done like a true Noa. Bravo.
I love how Hathaway Combined both regular Missiles and Funnel Missiles together is just insane. He managed to trick Lane and caused the Penelope to crash into the sea.
Imagine falling for the oldest dueling trick in the book this late into UC. Bro didn't consider once that he just shot at a beam weapon
In Lane's defence, this is like, his second time piloting a mobile suit in actual combat. 😅
Kenneth really gave an inexperienced pilot a Gundam and thought he'd be able to Amuro Ray his way into winning
@@IsthatAdamLobcorp "Wait that's not how newtypes work???"
@@IsthatAdamLobcorp Funfact: in the early parts of the movie Kenneth wanted Hathaway to pilot Penelope instead of Lane because of his combat experience
@@IsthatAdamLobcorpTo be fair Amuro was fighting suits 3x weaker than him until he got good. He did get skilled eventually but the Gundam gave him the a big wiggle room to mess up. Lane's second deployment was fighting a Gundam, one that was piloted by the leader of the largest anti feddie organization at the time.
Damn been so long since i waited for this clip on YT
I love that you can see the near-death trauma in Lane's eyes as the funnel missiles just pour out onto him.
You can really understand why he thinks the Xi must've gone down too. Not just because he was desperately trying to cope with the loss, but because all he could see was fire and oncoming death for several miles ahead of him. Past a certain point he may have figured the Xi must be tearing itself to pieces to put out that much firepower.
This is probably the most perfect Gundam aerial fight scene out there. Too bad things are literally so dark that I need to see the movie twice to see Penelope and Xi in their detailed glory lol.
LOL, I thought Lane in the end was a CG model, but upon closer inspection, he's clearly 2D drawn, but rotoscoped. Put me off for a while.
What makes this fight even more interesting is how hathaway baited lane to go after the beam rifle and was following him the entire time after.
What kind of puzzles me about this is that the Xi and Penelope don't have information to identify each other with even though they're both Gundams. We're they both that unprepared with information at the time?
Anaheim Electronics sold one Gundam (Penelope) to the Federation and secretly sold the other one (Xi) to Mafty, just so that the Federation cannot completely crush the terrorists and end the war.
Anaheim would never admit that they illegally sold a war machine to terrorists, so of course they'll say nothing about Xi Gundam to the Federation.
The Xi Gundam was built separately from the penelope, even though its data was used for the Xi, they were never together during development. The Xi was actually developed for Mafty specifically
Anaheim electronics plays both sides in the war supplying both sides and not leaking info to each side
Anaheim shenanigans.
@@HybrydATP64 not to mention the Penelope is just the Odysseus Gundam when detached from it’s minovsky flight unit.

Goddamn the sound in this makes it a 12/10
I love how this battle was decided with missiles and not beam weapons or some newtype magic like we normally see it😂
Pretty sure the missiles are controlled by psycommu
This movie is one of the best examples of quality over quantity for Gundam. Sure, you can have a bunch of fights with reused animations, mindless action, and mediocre sound design like in Wing.
Or... you can have only a few fights, Hathaway only has 2 mobile suit engagements and both are breathtaking, possibly the best looking and most immersive fights in the entire Gundam franchise. They almost feel like fighter jet dogfights with mechs. The sound design is top notch, the pov shots and cockpit displays make the action easy to follow, and all of the mobile suits have this weight and inertia to them, even the hyper-manueverable Penelope and Xi.
Although to be honest, my favorite design to come out of this movie has to be the Messer. It looks so menacing but it also feels like a natural progression of the Zeonic style monoeye design.
Facts.
Looks like someone trying to become Macross for real...
This movie is soooooooooo amazing! Really hope the next one comes out sooner than later. 🤲🏼
Blud got shot down and still thinks he can take on a mobile suit with an FMG-9 💀
連邦のモビルスーツのはずなのに、ペーネロペーのほうがオデュッセイアに出てくるような怪物感あって好き
God Hathaway is such a treat of a movie - I love it. It might be my favorite Gundam media lol
1:52 Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance
Deception at its finest
Funnily enough, Penelope should have the upper hand missile-wise
It has way more than the Xi has
Yet Hathaway clearly knows what he's doing and probably has more experience, deciding the fight's outcome
Lane is arrogant as hell...it's joy to see his pride humbled. 😊
Lane is just an arrogant rookie here while Hathaway is obviously a veteran pilot here after the events of CCA
Fighting on earth instead of outer space is is much more grounded and somewhat realistic for, space battle is just pure sci-fi I like this one better.
People give Hathaway a lot of shit and he doesn't, on the surface, match up with some of the more well known aces in the UC timeline. But he was just a few missiles away from ending the Penelope, or at least its pilot, in his first engagement against it.
Actually other way around at amuro and chars , he will feel underwhelming but both gone dude is literally greatest pilot in UC. Not even amuro got out of walking in chars counterattack. Understandable 10 years ago Hathaway will be treated loser unconfident just 2nd to amuro.
And also this is Hathaway's FIRST time pilotting the XI. The fact that he solo'ed and entire batallion on his own is an insane feat
暗闇の中のモビルスーツ空中戦が今までのガンダム作品になかったので楽しめたね
Like when you play AC6, your Missiles rarely hit the enemy, yet their missile keep hitting you despite you having dashed around like crazy
ペーネロペーの飛行音好き
That beam blasting isn’t your usual UC sounds.
I just realized why they have psycommu controlled missiles - it bypasses the I-field generators
Xi : *goes down on the water surfaces to at least stop the funnels-missile to stop if it's missed*
Lain Aim : "such a fool"
Also Lain Aim : *fall for mistaken beam rifle as a ms and get missile-d in the ass*
"Who's the fool now" - Probably not Mafty
Gyunei in hell:"you shouldn't fall for the trick."
The cockpit is so deep because the armor is so thick for both Gundam. But i can't imagine how Xi has become so tall while 50-100 year's later or whatnot in the Gundam F9 timeline all MS became so small.
I guess its more of a thing how technology gets smaller and sophisticated as it advances
"Miniaturization" happens

those machine gun sfx is gold
This was the only real action in the entire movie and it was TOTALLY worth the buildup. God damn
I thought the grunt suit fight was extremely cool, tbh I liked it better than this one since it actually showed how crazy urban/aerial combat could be from the perspective of civilians
this gundam fight scene is like christopher nolan dogfight scene
a smarter pilot in a superior machine, I wondering how it would have gone if Mafty didnt have to worry for a just rescued Gauman without normal suit and seemingly not even a copilot seat
The two machines are comparable but Hathaway is the superior pilot with way more experience than Lane who is green. Yes having to worry about Gauman and trying to not damage the Xi Gundam because he won’t have resupplies for the rest of his mission meant Hathaway was not as aggressive as he could’ve been which is why Lane survived this encounter.
The biggest problem I had with this fight is that it's so bloody dark, you can't actually see what's going on all that well.
I'm not too much into Gundam universe but with a couple of exceptions. I really don't like OP mechas with energy weapons that can single hand take out an enemy fleet, with also unrealistic ufo like motion.
This move was a refreshing, no doubts, they feel heavy, huge, and the overall add to realism blew my mind. What a great movie!
This reminds me a lot of Yukikaze, the sound design, direction, realism. I hope future Gundam will be more like this.
It took a special kind of guy to fail to kill his target, lost his hostage, got shot out of the sky and then walk out think thing that he won.
I love the missiles funnel from the Xi
I wish there was a released/cleaned-up version of PENELOPE that plays at 0:04. It sounds like an entirely different beast without the drums in the background
Looking forward to the sequel....someday
I still can't believe how easily the Penelope got funnel missile spammed, but that kinda proves us that Hathaway experience kinda matter......so far
I love and hate this scene
Loved it because It's amazing
Hate it because this scene is too dark to appreciate or is just me?

Anaheim selling a massive Gundam: Anaheim- this is the Pinnacle of engineering!
Mafty also wants to buy a Gundam: Anaheim- eh, let's just make a less than that of Earth Federation Gundam, a more streamline MS as they have less budget anyways.
After they make the Xi Gundam: Anaheim- uuh did we just made a better MS than that of EF?!
I still enjoy this sequence of the film a lot, especially the amount of small details that occurs as each mobile suits tries to intercept each other.
Straight to the point battle, especially as time and resources are scarce for Mafty.
Lane was a bit outclassed in this fight. Even though both Gundams are about their equals, Hathaway is both combat experienced and a Newtype.
