Such a shame, I actually thought they looked like a decent design. I wrote a story back in 2020, about the Eternal Dalek escaping into 1940s Germany, were he is captured by Nazis and experimented on, while in the meantime, the Dalek is working on bringing back the Dalek race as well as also turning some of its captives into Robomen

I'd have loved to have seen the Paradigm Dalek do the weapon swap.
The initial design was awful but the later changes to reduce the hump and darken the colours was a noticeable improvement. Never liked the deer eye but I like the eye shape.

I feel like the paradigm Daleks would have been fantastic as a separate threat from the regular bronze Daleks. They could have had a different kind of characterization, and been the focus of a new Dalek civil war, which everyone loves a bit of. They'd be good as a rare but opposing threat to the normal Daleks and we could have seen some interesting dynamics with the doctor pitting them against each other at strategic times. They are an interesting concept, and the props really do come across better in metallic colours. All they really needed was some slight proportion tweaking and they could have been fan favourites imo.

@@plantainsame2049 I'm actually writing a fanfic on what happened to the Paradigm Daleks. It doubles as a crossover with Disney's The Aristocats since Doctor Who is going to Disney Plus later in the year. I wanted them to have a civil war after their memories of the Doctor come back and one of the time war ones exterminate the Dalek Prime Minister and defied the will of the Paradigm Supreme. The Time War ones were wiped out again and a new type of Paradigm Drone that's smaller, less bulky, and in the traditional Dalek shape. But they follow the Doctor through the void into the Aristocats universe where there are a dozen Time War Daleks from the Medusa Cascade when their ship was thrown clear from the Crucible. The Time war Daleks are led by a Gold Fleet Commander Dalek, Dalek X the Inquisitor General Dalek, and a genetically replicated Red Supreme Dalek. Now I do like the first five Paradigm Daleks, so I only done them as the government of the paradigm and promoted the original Strategist and Drone to Prime Strategist and Drone Commander. And the new Grey Paradigm Drones are the footsoldiers while the Dark Red and Blue metallic Strategist and Drone Daleks are the officers that lead them.

I honestly love them, I understand wanting to change the design especially as the Time War design is starting to grow old for me, I feel like they could still have been used like in Asylum to indicate superiority which is already better than revolution's "deeper voice".

It's a shame the Paradigm Daleks were completely underused. I honestly liked them when they first appeared back in 2010 and I wanted to see what new abilities they had that their predecessors did not, as well as how they rebuilt the Dalek race, and a further look into their individual roles. If the production team had been more careful with their designs, trimming down their backsides, giving them more darker and metallic colours, and writing them in a way that showed off their abilities better, they may still have been with us to this day and with the same status as their bronze predecessors. If Big Finish do make audio dramas featuring the Paradigm Daleks, I hope they make up for how they were mishandled in the TV series.

This makes me very unhappy. Victory was one of the first Dalek stories I watched "live" though up until that point I'd obviously seen repeats. Whilst there were several obvious issues right from the start, such as the ridiculous height and poorly chosen colour palette, I loved the episode and the new design, and they remain some of my favourites. The fact they were never even given a chance after that one moment of glory, but rather simply faded away into nothing with no real canon explanation, is one of the glaring issues with Moffat's era of DW.
I would like to see more of different types of Dalek on screen together, or perhaps various warring factions of Daleks placed either against each other or the universe. Something that could span a whole season, maybe starting subtly at first, and showing the Daleks at their best - when they are not hindered by the Doctor's invulnerability.

I think a way to get fan opinion to turn around on these would be if they got the White Supreme Dalek covered in blood somehow. Seeing that come up bright on the white paint would be terrifying. maybe showing that Dalek aren't just mindless killing machines but are actively sadists to the point of self sabotage would simultaneously make them more threatening and also justify some of their logical fumbles in the past. Their great intellect being the only thing keeping their insanely augmented aggression from turning them into frothing animals

I personally loved the paradigm daleks. They are my favourite new who design, this is partly due to smiths era giving me so much nostalgia as it was around the time I started to fall more and more in love with the show. However it is also due to the fact that they remind me of the original 60s daleks, with a bulkier build and more menacing aesthetic. Personally I loved the idea of the colour coded ranking system to distinguish the different functions/ranks. I will admit the original colours were a bit extreme and bold so I do prefer the metallic colours seen in Asylum (apart from the strategist I preferred the original blue they used in victory). I would love to see the paradigm return and reclaim the rightful glory they deserve. I suggested bringing back the paradigm to RTD in a comment and he liked it which made me happy. I also have an idea for a dalek story concerning the Eternal dalek which I think you might enjoy. This is just my opinion ofc, you may disagree and that’s okay to each their own as they say. Xx

I think that the asylum colour scheme was much better, but keep the scientist the same and change the eternal slightly. I think metallic silver instead of black and a little more red in the yellow. The eternal could come back to help reboot the daleks, in a similar sense to power of the daleks it resides in a crashed ship itself damaged and it tries to rebuild the dalek race or something

They were completely wiped out at the conclusion of the siege of trenzalore, the supreme was the one talking to the doctor from that saucer and the remains of the paradigm were wiped out when the saucer was destroyed. The paradigm failed dramatically in universe constantly losing numbers of daleks and proved to be unreliable casings too, the Paradigm returned to using the bronze casings as that design struck most fear into the hearts of the universe. The mutants remain paradigm ones but they preferred the older "skins" in the end
Also the prime minister of the daleks kind of went insane when the memories of the doctor were returned and the paradigm ranks were temporarily redeemed when the supreme exterminated the prime minister and took back control, the paradigm were there because of the prophecies of the Eternal guiding them to trenzalore , though it is said that the eternal survived everything and is still out there.

The problem was they looked silly. The bright colours just looked like they were made to be turned into toys and didn’t match with any previous iterations of Daleks who mostly used a uniform colour scheme for every Dalek except the Supreme, excluding the renegade and necros/imperial Dalek factions from the 80’s.
I understand why they wanted a change from the bronze Daleks, but theres a reason there’s only really been minor changes to the design since 1963- it’s iconic. The Paradigm Daleks were too big and bulky. Keeping the basic design of the Time War Daleks but changing the colour scheme would be a good option though.

What never made sense to me was why they never just gave the paradigm a story by Big Finish. Make them the antagonist to one of their box sets. That way, you functionally explain where they went for people (like me) who want to see what happened to them, while also keeping their worst attribute out of the production, their design (though I think they looked better in asylum with the metallic colours) since it’s an audio format. The best part of all is you can keep the things about the paradigm that people genuinely do like, such as their voices. They have really cool and imposing voices that can come across just fine on Big Finish. Don’t know why this was never done honestly

    • @mediakira6621

Think the issue is , audio wise, they’re not really that distinguishable from other Daleks since Briggs can’t be asked to do older Dalek like voices.

I initially hated the paradigm daleks for that hunch back look. But over the years they grew on me and I love everything about them, including the hunch back look.
I’ve been for the past months been conceiving a story to bring them back as a prominent force. And it will be the paradigm we were promised.
This story I’ve been thinking of is about the paradigm secretly building it’s forces to spread across the universe, eliminating all daleks not within their paradigm including other pure daleks.
Another dalek civil war story, but between the Paradigm Daleks and the Skaro loyalists.

Now that we're a whole year out from the auction, I've been trying desperately to find information on who brought these props, and whether they were the kind of people who would restore them. Namely I wanted to know if my boy the Eternal, who I've actually met and is the most intact of the original 5 Paradigm Daleks, (okay given he's the Eternal that feels weirdly appropriate) was being looked after, but no information has come up so far. Closest I've gotten is a guy online who brought the metallic red drone and is refurbishing it as we speak, which is going really well.

  • @Azdaja13
    @Azdaja13 10 місяців тому +3

The Paradigm Daleks would have been better accepted if their debut story was far stronger (and secondarily if they'd used darker colour schemes like in Asylum of the Daleks). Rather than wasting a two-parter on the Weeping Angels, the Paradigm Daleks should have been introduced with a big two-part episode showcasing their power from the get-go. Victory of the Daleks entirely failed to do this so that episode would get scrapped too. It would have been far better to just introduce the Paradigm without the Davies-era Daleks at all and have the sudden emergence of a powerful new Dalek Empire from seemingly nowhere be a mystery to grab attention. Not to mention, rather than having one of each new Dalek variant line up and have their titles read out to us like we're stupid, they could have just shown this through what each Dalek type does on screen. So showing the red Daleks as the standard soldiers used in battles, blue Daleks advising the Supreme Dalek on strategy and perhaps maintaining communications with Daleks on the ground, co-ordinating their forces, orange Daleks performing horrific experiments and of course, the white Supreme Dalek shown to be in control. The Eternal Dalek is a problem here because it's title isn't really obvious by its function... and honestly it seems kinda pointless. I would have made the yellow Daleks more like an officer class of Dalek, commanding squadrons of varying sizes on the ground. You could even go further with the Dalek designs, adding more subtle details on the casings to show rank variation between Dalek variants (like what actual armies do), reinforcing the strict hierarchy.
All this would tie into the core concept that really should have highlighted with the Paradigm Daleks, that of co-ordination. Victory of the Daleks completely squanders this since the Paradigm Daleks are only in like half an episode (if that) and their only opposition really are World War II soldiers that stand zero chance against them. They literally achieve nothing in the episode except kill a few impure Daleks that accept death, and destroy a few spitfires with their saucer's cannons. I would have gone for a more Resurrection of the Daleks style of story, where the Daleks are shown doing what they do best: killing. The higher the on-screen body count the better. A really dark and grim Dalek story would have contrasted well with the more youthful and playful Eleventh Doctor, and could have been a much ruder awakening for Amy Pond on how bad things could truly get. As such, I think it would have better to set the Paradigm Daleks' introduction in the future, where the new Daleks are pitted against a civilisation that has weapons that pose a threat to them. Here the Eleventh Doctor could be horrified to find the Daleks not only alive (seemingly inexplicably at first) but thriving, and with new, more advanced casings. Not only that but the new command structure of Daleks could end up becoming one of the greatest weapons to overcome, as they're not only shown as powerful but use clever tactics and co-ordination to overcome their enemies. Later on it can be explained how the new Dalek Paradigm came to be, with the reveal that the new Daleks destroyed the impure Daleks that Davros created from his own body for being impure and that they accepted death willingly (this could be done by having the white Supreme Dalek boasting about how it destroyed them, describing how they begged for death, cursing their own existence, and showing The Doctor and Amy's sickened reactions to just how twisted the Daleks really are, especially Amy). The Daleks could then be defeated at the end of the story, but not entirely destroyed, with the Dalek race (and the Supreme Dalek) still surviving and thriving and becoming a looming threat in the universe once more.

I admit, the first time I saw the Paradigm Daleks, my head started playing the theme from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. But over the years, as I delved deeper and deeper into the Dalek fandom, the Paradigm designs have really started to grow on me. From seeing fan made animations, to learning more about them, to even seeing fan made builds of them (So far I've only seen one); I don't think the Paradigm were complete failures, just executed/designed poorly. But, as you all know, everything in Doctor Who, either very obscure or renown, usually comes back in one way or another.

    • @dalekbumps
      @dalekbumps  2 роки тому +6

I think they made a huge mistake revealing one Dalek of each coloured rank using footage filmed in a factory storeroom, the Power Rangers comparison wouldn't have been as noticeable if they had revealed, say, the Supreme, Strategist and a few Drones first, and held off the reveal of the Eternal and Scientist until the finale of Series 5. They should have clocked earlier that the set used for the reveal of the Paradigm was a shambles (why would a Dalek ship have clearly Earth-made ventilation shafts?) and they should have used better lighting to make them look less like oversized plastic action figures. The true tragedy of the Paradigm Daleks is that the design is mostly fine, with just a few tweaks required that were included in Asylum of the Daleks. It's the way in which the Paradigm Daleks were revealed that tripped them up at the first hurdle and made them a laughing stock. Hopefully they will return to the show in some capacity, but I think it's more likely that their story will be continued by Big Finish

I'm in the minority in that I didn't like the weapon swap design, it seems impractical to have a hatch at the back and I think watching a Dalek's weapon move slowly to the side like a carousel and then wait for another attachment to slide up and around to replace it would've looked laborious and a bit silly.
I always thought it made more sense for weapons to be withdrawn inside the casing from the point of protrusion and for the replacement to immediately emerge.. In fact as a kid I just assumed that was how it worked.

These are my favourite Dalek designs, specifically the metallic versions from Asylum, in Victory they were definitely too bright, and the interior of the Dalek Saucer looked awful compared to every other version. I would have loved to see red Drones leading squads of bronze Daleks in series 8-13, with Strategists in control of the saucers, that way everyone would have been happy, best of both. But at this point, best thing to do is to introduce an entirely new design and just stick with it, adding new variants into the ranks, like with Sec and the Crucible Supreme

I thought it was comical the way the Paradigms were quickly given a new paint job and relegated to the background in the Dalek Parliament. I imagined the regular Daleks talkign about them behind their backs. "Who-does-he-think-he's-kidding-with-the-new-paint-job?" "Yes-someone-is-still-obviously-getting-too-much-of-the-pie-nutrition-supplement-from-the-life-suppport-computer"

I didn’t have a problem with the Paradigm honestly. The Time War design has become boring after 17 years. I liked the colour scheme, how each Dalek had its own lore and function - it reminded me of the 1960’s Doctor Who movies. My main problem is just that they don’t look metallic enough - they look plastic. Giving them a nice metallic sheen, making them look a bit greasy like the Time War Daleks, I think would have improved them considerably.

Personally I loved them, especially as the concept art made clear they possessed the ability to swap attachments from inside their casings, explaining the need for a larger size and opening possibilities. Sadly this was never explored in the show and I think that might have redeemed them to many fans. I rather liked the concept of Dalek soldiers outfitted with two guns, while their officers have their usual manipulators and gun combo.

On the one hand i agree they made a big mistake trying to replace the bronze daleks with these new deisgns, i also think the metallic colour scheme the new ones got in the Asylum episode was pretty cool. I would personally prefer a scenario where the higher ranking daleks were the paradigm design but the common soldiers were still the bronze daleks. Alternatively this couldve been the perfect setup to a new dalek civil war where it's the time war veterans vs the new paradigm

At the moment, we need an individual Dalek that is a major threat. Supremes just aren't doing it anymore. A Paradigm could fill that role.
I was thinking of having the Eternal come back as by far that Dalek is definitely the among the most anticipated by fans for a returning Dalek. Maybe make it a dark golden or a dark purple to make it more threatening. Have it want revenge for the Doctor for destroying the Dalek Paradigm, its entire race. Maybe have it be betrayed by the Time War Daleks like the Dalek Time Controller was. This will make it even more of a threat as a lone Dalek is proven to always be a good threat. It can also set up a future Dalek civil war event or eventually have the eternal become a new Emperor Dalek.

With Doctor Who, you can never say never. After all, if rumors are to be believed, a certain villain not seen for nearly sixty years is about to make his return. The Paradigm Daleks may yet find their way back... although the props being sold isn't a good sign.
I've always find the story of the Paradigm Daleks funny. Fans hated the design so much, (myself included) that the BBC changed them back, then fans were upset that they never did anything with them. It is a shame we never got to see them in all their glory, here's hoping Big Finish will do something cool with them.

I was not a fan of the Paradigm Daleks and was honestly disappointed seeing Victory and how apparently they were replacing the Time War design, so I'm not sorry to see the back of them. But my issue was not their colour scheme, I loved the Peter Cushing Dalek movies and I'm very on board with colourful Daleks and colour denoting rank or duty. Colourful Daleks were Terry Nation's baby that he never managed to get working into TV. It was the overall design I didn't like, they overhauled the shape so much that it made them look more like a five-year-old's attempt at drawing a Dalek.
From what I've heard, the Paradigm Daleks were at least in part meant to appear more threatening by being more imposing, which I think is a fallacy. Bigger is not necessarily more intimidating, indeed being squat really shows their confidence and sense of superiority, they don't need to be big to be dangerous. I've seen many designs that overhaul the Daleks' appearance without doing away with the base shape and proportions, and they would have been so much better for the Paradigm.

A fact of the bronze Daleks' design was that the height of the eyestalk was chosen to reach the level of Rose Tyler's eyes, so they could be almost "face to face" during the events of Dalek. I believe this carried over to the Paradigm where the new height of the eyestalk was level with Matt Smith's eyes. Unfortunately this made them look far too tall to be practical

They honestly always make me think of the Toyota Tundra of the era, yeah of all the upgrades they really went too far too fast. I wouldn’t have minded a color change, perhaps the the bottom skirt base simplified & maybe just some upgrades to make it seem as though we are transitioning from the time war daleks to a more base standard dalek. Cybermen have already gone through 3 big changes while dalek change has been slow & back & forth.

I've always been sad that they retired these props and shelved the idea entirely. I do understand the reasonings behind the decision, but I really did like how "solid" the design looked, shape-wise, all sleek and sharp edges, yet still a bit "clunky" and inelegant as a Dalek should be.
I wish they had been able to expand on the concept of what the New Paradigm Daleks were and what it could have represented for them as a civilization. Apart from Davros' New Empire and the Dalek Emperor's human cell hybrids, the New Dalek Paradigm represents the first *real* organization of Post-Time War Daleks we've gotten to see. The first Daleks with no real "roots" to the Time War, the inheritors of a dead empire's legacy, walking (gliding?) along in its shadow. The only knowledge they would have of the old Dalek Empire(s?) and its history would be whatever information they were already programmed with, and any other data or legends that could be scraped from elsewhere. How would that change things for these Daleks, how would that play into their motivations?
And it has to be said, I always appreciate some good alien body horror! So I was really intrigued by the design's implication that their casings had been bioengineered, grown directly from the progenitor devices instead of being assembled in a construction line like the Daleks that came before them. A fusion of metal and flesh that reaches far beyond anything Davros had been able to achieve with the Necros experiments and his army of Imperial Daleks. The prop's fleshy eyeball and slightly more "organic" shapes helped to sell that idea rather well imo, made it look a little more alien and alive (if not for the plastic coating of the original props). I also think expanding more on that concept would have played very nicely into the whole idea of the New Paradigm having a lack of roots; a grotesquely twisted visgage of the Dalek form, rising from the shadows and laying claim to a history and a culture that they did not forge.

I think the excessively vivid colors they went with were instant death for this design as even more casual viewers would mock that aspect. If they had shown up with the more muted color scheme and no weird hump at the back from the beginning then it may not have worked out the same way. It's also annoying that even after they did make those fixes they completely abandoned the idea that these daleks each had an individual role and could remain a unique group like the cult of skaro. They should have done a lot more with that, but that potential was instantly flushed down the toilet with the poor first impression they made. For me the ideal outcome would have been keeping them as the core leadership of the dalek race going forward and the new "drones" being new paradigm but still using the NSD casing with a new color scheme rather than the very overused gold scheme.

As far as I'm concerned, 'Victory of the Daleks' is an episode-long plot hole, and thus _non-canon._ It makes no sense compared to the entire rest of the show and leaves absolutely no consequences whatsoever. It came from nothing and has left nothing. What do we lose if we discount it from canon? Nothing! We can just say that the casings that appear between 'Pandorica' and 'Asylum' are some advanced 'guard' design they briefly used before discarding them later.

Good. They look terrible. It was actually me who was one of the first peopel to use the term "Fatleks" I get the idea of making them larger and more imposing, the but proportions just look wrong, the head section looks too small compared to the body, and I hated the way they stuck out at the back. Garish colours more suited to young kids toys, and they look like they're made of plastic. I think the bronze Daleks were about the best; they have the classic design, but updated to look much more solid than the classic series Daleks, which sometimes looked tatty and patche dup with sticky tape because, well, they often were due to a severe lack of budget. The bronze Daleks looked exactly what a Dalek is: a war machine. The Paradigms in their garish colours and plastic casings looked like things designed to sell children's toys of themselves, not something you could even imagine on a battlefield.
