- I've been very curious on how to safely remove weeds around my vegetable plants. I test three organic and safe week killer options to use in my raised bed garden.

OMG! I LOVE your garden area. I love the fact that it's all fenced in. What I wouldn't give to have this setup. Every year, no matter what I try (within my financial ability) the deer come in and completely devastate my garden. What they don't eat (which isn't much) they add insult to injury and just trample what is left. 😭
Your garden is gorgeous
We have the same problem with deer, but even worse with raccoons. I love having a fence, although it isn't perfect.
Your garden is looking amazing!! Keep up the good work! I grew up all my life growing gardens and animals. When my husband and I got married we got away from it because that’s not the way his family did it. Now the more things I grow he is getting excited about growing more things. So thank you for the inspiration and the way you have done it since it is practical and always with raised beds.
I'm slowly inspiring my wife who didn't grow up around this lifestyle. It's gets addictive watch those plants and vegetables grow. Then the taste oh my..... 10 times better than store bought.
Kevin your garden is beautiful!! You work so hard it is nice to see how you prosper from it. Something fun to try. The flowers from squash can be breaded and fried and eaten love all you share Thanks again
I had another viewer tell me about the flowers, I never knew that.
Omg kevin so sorry andrew lol. What was i thinking lol
That's OK, it happens 😊
Hey Andrew, I enjoyed your weeding video, your thorough in what you show no one day application and that's it . You show over several days. I continue see Roundup on TV where it caused health concerns! Keep up the good work neighbor, I'm in Georgia.
Thank you for watching! I'm going to revisit this with an industrial strength vinegar.
Next year you may want in invest with ground cover cloth then put your mulch chips on top of it. They have the kind of cloth that will allow the water to soak through to the ground. Living Traditions Homestead is a You Tube homestead family that does alot of gardening using this ground cover cloth. They give the name for it. Looks to work great....you might want to check their channel out on their garden videos....
That is a good idea!
Stoney Ridge Farmer covered this last year on his farm on his fence rows. I think he used like an industrial grade Vinegar as he said the consumer/food grade Vinegar wasn't strong enough. I don't think he did a follow-up on his though but you may want to check his video library for that.
Thanks, I have heard that "cleaning" vinegar is stronger.
Hi, Andrew! Silver Queen is looking great! Your panel is working. With the breeze you were experiencing in the video, the panel was holding the stalks firm and steady.
Yes it's working amazingly well!
The propane burner works awesome for sure. Really like the t shirt. Glad I went with that blue gray color
Thank you very much
I was brought up in Texas and we used the propane weeder of yours to burn the needles off cactus for the cows to eat in the summer when there wasn't much grass.
Wow, that's awesome! I had no idea that cows eat cactus
VW Family Farm uses organic thing's on their garden. Bumble Bee Junction uses something I am not sure what they used but it would be in Tina and Mark's playlist.
Thanks
I have seen that recipe for weed killer on Facebook, some say it works great, maybe you just have really tuff weeds! The garden is looking awesome. You know if you plant zucchini you get enough to feed the whole neighborhood, but it is good raw with dip or fried and we can’t forget bread!
We love squash and zucchini! Yes there is always enough to feed the entire neighborhood.
Try taking a watering can and pouring it directly onto the roots.
How about using a hand held shield, like one used for spray painting, to move the leaves out of the way and protect from the heat ! Enjoy your show!!
Very good idea!
The garden looks great
Thanks
I think you have to find vinegar that's 30% acidity. The household variety is only 5%.
I think you are correct, I'll try this again.
I always weed whacked along my fence line ( inside & outside ) I was always afraid of using commercial weed killers because I have three dogs that I didn’t want to risk them getting sick or possibly dying. Yes !! I tried many home treatments !! But watching your video, guess what my next Amazon order will be 😂🤣👍🏻 Thank you 🥰🙏🏻
That burner works well!
Beautiful raised bed ! When a young kid I helped my Granddad plant garden ! I am retired now and have a small garden(not raisedbed 25x30) but I have forgot all I learned from him . Will plant tomatoes , cucs , zuchs , maybe corn . Could you please help me with seed distances and plant separation . Layout ! Thnks sooo much
This is what I use and it’s been very effective for me.
What about on grass?
Is this safe for vegetable patch. I want to clear overgrown vegetables patch with it. But afraid it will affect my soil biome
Its call crab grass hard to get reed of ,usually have to pull it up by the root, because it spreads every where too!
Luckily it burns up well!
I have tried the spray you mentioned. You do have to spray several times. But I can spray everything I want to on my property in about 10 minutes. Lol
Lol I definitely don't have that luxury
Dawn original blue works the best. It also will work on mold and mildew.
Thank you
Need to use 30% acetic acid vinegar that can be found at Home Depot and probably other such places. Regular vinegar is about 4-7% acetic acid and mostly water.
I used 22 percent
Rick salt is the way to go. Plus salt will keep insects away from foundations of that's where you put it.
Thank you for the information
Hey Andrew! I know what you mean, I hate using chemical weed killers, however I do use those applications on our 1/4 mile stone driveway as bad as I hate it. Behind our home where we have a stoned area I use the vinegar/salt/dishwashing liquid then torch it with propane. This is due to us having multiple bird feeders as well as humming bird feeders. Not only do bird but squirrels as well end up eating from the ground. I would hate to think I led to a slow poisoning death of any (I’m not above a quick death for squirrel gravy of dove poppers) but I don’t like anything that hurts an animal slowly. That being said if I don’t want that going into a animal I definitely wouldn’t want it going into me or any other human. I grew up hand weeding & hoeing our garden. I refuse to use any man made weed killers around my garden. Thanks for the video 👍🏼
Thank you for watching! I feel the same way
Wish I lived closer to ya. I'd come pick up those Mulberry trees lol
Thank You good job
I really do have a hard time with my garden, because I raise BEES. Without the help of commercial herbicides and pesticides it's a pain. I never thought about it until I got bees, but after tons of research I've found that seven dust which is what most gardeners use is one of the most toxic chemicals to Bees. When the Bees land on the plant to do their work the powder gets stuck on their pads and they carry it back to the hive and bam,a whole colony gone. I've bought and tried almost everything and the majority of it doesn't work. As a beekeeper,I really appreciate you looking for other ways to get results, but it's a major pain. Thanks, Bee happy. Nice garden.
Organic means are usually tougher no doubt, I've had mixed success with organic insect treatment as well as weed treatments.
I'm sorry to hear that the homemade chemicals did not work out. That is disappointing especially for what you need it for. But at least you do have a backup. The garden is looking real nice man. If it's on your property it definitely going to look nice.
That's OK, I'll try again with something different.
Maybe just lay some heavy weed fabric. My favorite for fence line weeds is Rock salt. Just pile on a line of rock salt right on top of the growth.
I should have used weed fabric from the start.
If you grow asparagus you can dump tons of salt on them and it will kill everything but the asparagus
From what I’ve read is that you need stronger vinegar
Yes, I just got 22% vinegar. Will be testing soon
@@TKCL awesome can’t wait to see if it works
Epsom salt is actually good for plants. I think the reason it's added is to help the plant metabolize everything else you add to the mixture. Vinegar alone should kill plants if it's straight
Thank you for the information, I know epsom salt is popular for helping tomatoes.
BEST weed killer you can use is epsom salt, white vinegar and dawn, and I have killed a big part of my yard with it on a very hot day.
That's exactly what I used! I'm going to try stronger vinegar.
There is organic weed and grass killer that U Tube gardener uses check on U Tube Garden Answer ....
I watch garden answer from time to time, I'll look for that video.
Ok I was told to use regular table salt and I see you use Epson salt???
That's what the recipes I found online called for. I don't think it matters honestly
You need to spray for 3 days and it will kill the roots also.
I'm going to try again, and next time with stronger vinegar.
10:15 Waxy stuff looks like Nutsedge...
At least on my screen.. Ewww.
From my research it works but doesn't last near as long as the Round up.
I can see that
corn is getting tall or you're just short or both as far as weeds I just burn them off or use strong vineger and salt
its all good even though you spell kelley wrong
I'm short, getting stronger vinegar and I spell my name right!
@@TKCL can't remember what percentage the vinegar is but I want to say it was stronger than most store bought. try it again with that might have better results. I think it was like 35% Pure Concentrated Vinegar
I also have a little propane stick that is easy to carry around it takes a little bottle of gas verses the 20 pound tank very good for those little touch ups
an as far as the name we can agree to disagree, no-one knows how its spelled till we tell them. you're still a kelley/ kelly right
you know I'm just busting your balls about it right?
Yes your not offending me at all, I've got thick skin. You have to when you put your life on the internet 😂
That has nothing to do with getting weeds Out of my garden this is stupid
I thinl that will work very well for you in the garden.
put salt right on the ground
I know you don't wanna here this, but me and my family been using weed killers such as Round up and others for over 40 plus years, and some of my other family are farmers and that's all they us, and now i'm in my 60s and going strong not missing any fingers or toes, very healthy and don't take any meds for anything, to me using Vinegar is a waste of money, if you don't kill the root what have you accomplished. but any way very good video just a good reminder for me to keep using good weed killers lol
Watching my mother deal with stage 4 lymphoma and seeing all the related articles of glysophate and lymphoma makes you be a little more cautious. It might not be tied together at all, but I want to be safe with what I put in my body. You just can't tell fact from fiction anymore.
Try putting cornmeal on the weeds. It prevents germination. Last up to 3 years so don't use it were you would plant later.
Wow I've never heard of that before
Andrew what type of salt did you try?
Epsom, it was listed in a lot of recipes I seen online.
Man you went Old Testament on that grass.
We use that at work... using industrial grade vinegar...it killed the tops of the weeds but they come back within 2-3 weeks
I am going to try stronger vinegar, but I'm worried it will come back like you said.
@@TKCL like I said we had pretty decent knock down but just doesn’t last... I use two different weed burners at home... I a big one similar to what you have for the large areas and I have a smaller one that uses a 1 lb. cylinder for tight weeding and where I don’t want to damage surrounding vegetation
I really want a small burner like you have. I've been looking at them.
I used to use vinegar and salt. It works OK but it’s kind of like the short term round up it worksWith a couple of applications but it grows back eventually. You have to use too much of it and it’s no cheaper than weed killer. If it’s a driveway or an area like that where you want nothing to grill you can just pour a bunch of rocksalt on there like you would on an ice covered driveway and that salt will keep stuff from growing for a while.
Fire is always fun. When you put your mulch down you should throw a few random firecrackers in there just to keep it interesting. ;)
LOL I like the firecracker idea!
I never had any luck with any kind of homemade formula I found! I REALLY want to buy a propane weed eater like yours! It scares my hubby! Ty for this additional video!
They work very well! They are safe too, just don't point anywhere you don't want to burn 😊
A good, honest, and thorough video, warts and all. I've tried the vinegar recipe with even less results. Never considered the torch. I like that idea very much. Thanks for taking the time to shoot this.
The torch is my good to for a couple of years now. I've got a big one and small one.
I have used this mixture before with white distilled vinegar and it worked fine but it was on an area of weeds with no grass. I don't know of any other mixture that is safe to use near garden plants. I like the results of your propane burner.
Thank you, I'm going to try again with stronger vinegar. The propane burner works very well.
Have you ever eaten the squash flowers? Egg, bread, fry. Yum
Never have! Interesting
Keep after it. Love the gate bolt of course, thank muches POW!
I know you do!
I must be old school but if I was younger I would spend a little each evening and pulling all of it . But at my age I like your idea . Have a grate weekend , God bless Grammy from Jay Ok
Lol I'd be pulling daily, in this Florida sunshine we can grow weeds and grass.
How did we survive when we were younger howing and weeding the garden. If these kids had to do as we did they would say it was cruelty . Be safe
I drank from a garden hose too 😳
