Jazzie B used to play this version on his kiss fm show. Shame they didn't get sample clearance because this version is far better than the commercial release
Was originally on the victim label. She used to come to butterfly's nightclub in oldham regularly in 1991 and sing this version live. Great track, far better than the re release remix
I'm from Oldham shame I was only 11 at the time. I never knew Gabrielle came to my home town. Butterflies is the place where my "school leaving do" was held. I guess it was for every year before and after us until the club went defunct
Will always be the proper version to me. I have it somewhere buried in my vinyl collection. Absolute underground classic way before the version most people know 👌🏾
I heard this on a dance floor at the time. I couldn't believe it wasn't formally released. Me and my friends danced our arses off to this version. We saw Gabrielle perform this live at Derby's Pink Coconut club in a revised way. I felt a bit sad it was changed although, still a classic. This version is more truthful
This got a big rinse at the Toxteth blues parties, circa 1991. It was getting a lot of love but by the time it got to major label release, Tracy Chapman had blocked the sample and the version that hit no.1 was in remixed form
Some comments mention this version being better and I'd agree. I'm sure the Fast Car sample could have just been taken out and the song started from about 0:20
@@derekwilkinson688 Pete Tong used to play it all the time on the Essential Selection when it was a white label then we all know what happened. I was really surprised at the time. I thought Tracy Chapman was really cool. She would have made a lot of money out of this too. She probably wanted too much money, thinking about it.
I wish iTunes would put this version on their app. This was the first version of Dreams that I heard back in the 90s. My sister bought the 12” version😱amazing! 😍😩
I've got a couple of white labels of this. Sounds like this is being played fast on the Technics - Reminds me when I first got it and played it on the radio in Coventry. The switchboard lit up like a christmas tree. Choon.
Soul II Soul also sampled those drums from Graham Central Station tune 'The Jam', as did 100's of others www.whosampled.com/Graham-Central-Station/The-Jam/
Some artists don't like their music sampled but Bob Dylan did let Gabrielle sample Knocking On Heaven's Door for Rise and even Paul Weller really enjoyed her song Why which sampled Wild Wood and he re recorded his vocals for that one
Amazing bootleg! And i never knew that the brothers Van Halen are co-writers of this song.. Can i find a download link of this version somewhere? i really want this one!!
Good one. Anyone knows if this is downloadable somewhere or may be original 12 " record name so I could start to look for it. Thanks a lot for any help.
To be honest I prefer the other version more .. maybe cos I’m younger and only found out about this one recently .. but I think Traci chapman is a 🐄.. always acting stuck up over her songs
This is a nice piece of music history. You can still here the inspiration in the final version. Such an epic voice.

This is how I remember it, 1992 before it got pulled. Classic
Omg I've looked for this version FOREVER. This was my anthem as a fresher at uni in 1992. Absolutely brilliant!
And I got the pleasure of seeing Gabrielle perform this version live in Preston. Best times of my life.
am grateful to have this version on vinyl! with the thanks of my mum giving me it, 1992 version slaps ❤

I'm from regional Queensland Australia so seeing this kinda thing I only ever dreamed about.... lucky you ❤

I still have this on 12" white label vinyl. Pure magic!
Since hearing this I'm 42 but am 12 again thinking I cool n
Always got my pal to play it over n over xxx
I bugged the dj for this every week back in the day. The best version.

Ahhhhhh this is what UA-cam is for!!! Man I loved this version!!! Thank you for the upload!
Here, here, mate, where would I have heard it again?
@@derekwilkinson688 it was popular at its time. I want to say it has been on a commercial but not sure.

This was the original and everyone was hyped on this.. Still Freakin’Em 2020
Not heard this version in years! Thank you so much. Shame Tracey Chapman put a block on it. This is way better than the one released.

Ain’t happening. Blocked by Tracy Chapman.
I remember hearing this over a year before the sample-free version that became a hit.
I always thought this two songs were closely related and share sorta similar tunes...
The version that got commercial release still menages to sound like Fast Car.
Boyh songs have the same chord structure. Fast Car was probably an influence on Dreams.
Had a recording of this off Rave FM notts, loved it, gutted with the final release ..
Probably me that played it back then. Picked it up from Jonathan at Arcade records. I used to play the Sunday morning chill out show.
Sure i recall one of the DIY DJ's play this at an early Universe/Tribal Gathering rave in 92/93.
memories i still have a 12" of this
❤Saw her promoting this now classic tune at The Pink Coconut Derby... before it's release. Became mine and my girls tune.❤
still love thia version till now 2023

I love this comment, 8 years later. Bet you still have lots of great stories.
love it got it in raynes lane records. middlesex jon jules
Nice and catchy, this is how I remember when I first heard it.
very creative and catchy. Super nice!
Wow! This one's so dope!
how many times did people use the soul II soul drums?
Soul II Soul also sampled those drums from Graham Central Station tune 'The Jam', as did 100's of others

my favorite song
Need a HQ download of this please!

What are you talking about?
Van Halen had a song named 'Dreams' at least 5 years before this, and it's nothing to do with this Gabrielle song.
Tracy Chapman blocked it....not sure why exactly as it would have promoted her original!
Doesn't really matter now. Her song is considered a classic. I mean have you seen the Spotify streams.
Ask Nikki Minaj
strange that he did that, considering that she now has an official version of her own/
ua-cam.com/video/GSu9nmHKGIk/v-deo.html
But she allowed the Jonas Blue ft. Dakota cover version to happen. No hate, I love that version, in its own right.
i got this back in 1993 when single was being promod on dance floors. later sample was removed my producers.
super cool...
Damnn ol time fav!
Bootleg wirh China black searching on the B side. Such a great version, tune and voice.
nice one
She is Harlequin from the masked singer.
💯
as far as i can see its the only one on youtube thats the original bootleg mix ??
Good one. Anyone knows if this is downloadable somewhere or may be original 12 " record name so I could start to look for it. Thanks a lot for any help.
Its really hard to find it to buy now ,
If anyone knows any link to get pls kindly let me know :)
I think there are a few versions on Discogs under the victim label
🔥

First heard this in inspirations in chesterfield then on PETE tong about 6 months later
LOVE
YOOOOO!
dont worri if it does i got it saved lik a g6. so if it gets removed, i got a spare 4 ya ;)
I prefer the newer version, I feel the sample is misplaced.
user tunespinner has the original record
To be honest I prefer the other version more .. maybe cos I’m younger and only found out about this one recently .. but I think Traci chapman is a 🐄.. always acting stuck up over her songs
Tracy Chapman did her a favour! the sample adds nothing extra to it. The released version is a lot better.
