I enjoyed your video as an excellent overview of the entire reloading process. I agree with your emphasis on cleanliness and attention to detail. I learned to stop and do something else if I lose concentration while reloading. Your comments on the finer points of using the 800-X are interesting, too.
There are dies that are designed to drop powder through so you don't have to take the case out of the shell plate to put powder in it you might look at Lee which would allow you to just dump your measured powder out of the pan into the top of the die instead of taking it out of the shell plate and putting it back in the shell plate
No dispenser does perfectly with extruded rifle powders. I use the same hornady auto charge and with extruded powders I’ll set it just a little short of what I need and finish it off with a small scoop the old fashioned way, ends up being faster that way for me
Just curious here, but why do you go to all the trouble of using 800-X? I only this year used up a 1/2 lbs can of it, mainly in my own 10mm, but also in .45 Colt and .38 Special, and it's about the worst of all powders to deal with for handgun loading because of its cornflake consistency. I'll never buy that stuff again, unless we run into another panic and no other handgun powder is available. In terms of ballistics, it does pretty well with max loads in 10mm, but I get significantly better performance in that caliber using Accurate No. 7 and Accurate No. 9, both of which are far easier to run through a conventional powder measure. I mean, it's your reloading procedure and you must have your reasons, but it seems to me that you're defeating the purpose of having that nice Hornady Lock-n-Load progressive setup by taking that case out just to charge it. Also, as a suggestion, since you're using your powder dispenser for this particular powder, there is an inexpensive item you could buy that would make it so that you wouldn't have to remove the case from the press to do that step, which is a Lee powder-through-expander die. As its name suggests, this particular die serves as the expander, but its expander is drilled through so that you can drop powder right through it on the upstroke as it expands the case. If you used this die in place of your conventional expander, at least you could have a funnel on top of it (I can actually jam my RCBS funnel into the top of mine and have it stay put), then just pour your powder pan into that funnel without ever removing the case for that step.
Greetings. I do not use a the case activated powder drop. I take my time reloading and use a electronic scale to measure each drop. 800-X is a good powder and very energetic. That said, I really like Power Pistol and CFE Pistol better.
2021 here.... I will gladly use any powder I can find now as there isn’t any available unless you prepared during the early stages of the pandemic. Second thing, great video, I would be happy to purchase your case activated powder unit! 😁
@@baldguyadventure I heard that! The 1/2 lbs can of 800-X was one that I had bought clear back in the 1990s that I decided to use up, but I was forced to resort to buying a whole pound more of it to load up 1000 rounds of .45 ACP for a friend when (you guessed it) the last gun/ammo panic (courtesy of Barack Anti-Gunner Obama) was going.
I am EXTREMELY NEW to reloading. So I have a few questions that may appear laughable so I apologize. But any advice is appreciated. I've been looking into the Dillon precision RL 550c I will primarily be reloading for my 10mm or 45 ACP. Is that a good way to go? Other questions. What products do you use to clean your spent brass? What die set do you suggest? Thanks in advance
10mm The ULTIMATE Handgun Round when loaded to S.A.A.M.I. spec, but don't tell anybody or they'll buy up all the reloading products, just tell them it kicks to much that seems to still be working
I've got the same powder measure. It's a pain. I have got 1 inch rifle loads out of my Dillon with a bar type measure. Should be able to get even better accuracy of the cylinder style of the Hornady.
Brother awesomevideo.I have a glock 20 and very interesTed in reloading for my 10mm. I want to purchase a Lee loader 4 die kit and wondering what kind of press could I use that's affordable .A any other tips you have I would appreciate.lots of pigs here in hawaii .Thanks again and have an awesome day brotheraAloha Ron
I do love the Barnes 125gr TAC-XP bullet as my carry load for 10mm Auto. It needs a liittle bit faster powder, then for the more heavery bullets. Any recommendation, sir? I use a standard GLOCK 20, so the pressure may not be to high, to avoid smileys on the brass.
Im new to reloading the 10mm whats the best bullet and powder for the 10mm looking at a max range of shooting at 60 yrds and to kill at 60yrds can i get some help the gun im using is a hipoint 10mm auto carbine
CFEpistol Check, Longshot Check but No BE-86, No IMR 8208 XBR or H322 in your boudoir but you have shotgun powder that requires the max fill and did you mean to fill 10 auto to 8.7 gr or is that a P++ round with 9.7 gr?
what is your favorite powder and load for 125 grain 357 sig.i use 10 grains of 800x.the advertized velocity in hodgdon manual is 1438 but I am getting 1500+ out of my glock 31.
For self defense 357 SIG loads, I use this combination (no warranty - you must still work up to these pressures yourself): Projectile: Barnes TAC-XP 125 grain Brass: Starline 357 SIG - never fired Primer: CCI No 500 small pistol Powder: 8.3 grains Alliant Power Pistol COAL: 1.135"
Do you ever use sealant on the 10mm? I haven't heard much about people doing that with 10mm, which is odd because it's sort of a bear defense backcountry round. Seems like hunters would want that if they're out in the rain and all.
I got a rifle 10mm in my reloading manual it gives me No9 but does not list 2400. 2400 burns faster than No9. What I want to do is use a good magnum powder to get more velocity with a slower burning powder since I’m using along barrel. I hope you might have some info or might know a better route. Thanks
I bought that powder scale/thrower. It stopped working within 100 rounds. Thankfully I bought it from Midway and they took it back, no questions asked. It looks like now that Hornady scale/thrower is discontinued. Hmmm...
Don't buy a Hornady sonic cleaner, I mean it works if the brass is freshly shot or very clean already. I've had to spend so much time on each case to clean them.
Still working on it, 200xtp NO. 9 10mm Stepping it down 1300+(too hot) Finishing 1250-1275 for accuracy (hunting) 800x too sensitive Kimber target love it!
KIM COVENEY hate to say it, but your Kimber won't last long with those loads, no matter what mods you may do to the gun. It's not because it's a 1911 pattern gun, it's that it's a Kimber. They don't last in 45ACP, so I would hate to see what happens with a steady diet of real 10mm Auto ammo
Listen to the man on that one! Never even consider such a thing if you value your gun or your body parts. In fact, be sure to have only one powder on your bench at any one time to avoid getting the wrong powder in whatever you're reloading and to avoid pouring a powder back into the wrong container.
PinkOld Michael Noirot Great tips and advices. thanks. I'm doing my researches first before going into it. Pretty intimidating but figured worth learning.
Luis Thillet No problem. You're definitely right to read all that you can to learn how it's done before diving headfirst into the process. The latter guy is really good about responding to questions.
Both #9 and Longshot are solid powders for 10mm 180gr projectiles. I do not provide load data, for many reasons, but it is listed in Hornady's 9th edition Handbook of Cartridge Reloading.
I prefer No. 9 for top velocities in 10mm from 155 grain bullet on up. It also meters very nicely and consistently through conventional powder measures.

Those powdered metal dies are inferior when it comes to reloading large caliber rounds, like the .50 BMG.....they are not the way to go. Hornady fell down on that product line.

800x. Blue Dot and Longshot are my favorite for 10mm
Only downside to 800x is it meters like corn flakes. Makes full power loads though. I like Blue Dot, Power Pistol, BE-86 and Longshot.

Blue Dot for me using 200 XTP at 1250fps in G20
