    Every time I see some video where people are saying "this brand is better", or "why would you use that obsolete camera?" I watch a video like this to remind me what photography really is.

    As always a superb video, great how you used so a wide variety films and gave such explanations of your shots. As a total aside, I put another roll of colour negative through my Bronica and everything went perfect, I will use AG in the future, but I couldn't walk away defeated. Thank you very much for your support.

    Absolutely stunning images. I'm visiting the UK in April 2018 so I'm currently plotting out planned photo stops. The Roaches now have to be near the top of the list. Would love it if I got the same weather conditions as you. I do love me some trees and mossy rocks in the mist.

      +dmonaghan99 It is a great location but can get very busy at weekends with walkers and climbers so I'd recommend a weekday if possible. It is very accessible as the road is very close as is an excellent cafe which always helps.
      Hope you enjoy your trip to the UK and come away with many images but don't forget your wet weather clothing 🙂

    Great video Steve with excellent editing. It's interesting to see your compositions. I have shot some similar ones on the day but overlooked them in favour of the more obvious. I also still have the Ektar film in the XPan - I really need to finish it.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  7 років тому

      Thanks Robin, we were lucky with the weather but it was very busy and noisy - not that you can tell from the video. Why not bring the Xpan to Wales next week and use up that roll - I'll be bringing my Bronica and plenty of colour negative too 🙂. Might shoot some 35mm too.

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley 7 років тому

      I may do although I'm looking to lighten the load and the XPan is like a brick. The weather forecast looks like strong sun so I think the Infrared camera needs to come along.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  7 років тому

      Digital Infrared is a must next week, also bringing a few rolls of Rollei IR 400 along. Some of the big views will work well during the day if we get a lot of sun.

    • @RobinWhalley
      @RobinWhalley 7 років тому

      Thanks for reminding me. I had forgotten all about the Rollei IR. I have 12 rolls in the freezer still. I also have the new mask less print film from First Call Photographic that I need to test out.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  7 років тому

      Bring it along, I'll pack it in 35mm and 120 as well as the little canon G15 conversion. I'd be interested to see how that new print film compares to Ektar and Portra.

    Hey Steve, loved the video. I just recently got a Bronica SQa and was wondering what the cable release you use? also the close up filter you use. thanks for sharing the video!

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  6 років тому

      I just use a standard threaded release Adam, I really like the fact it screws into the left hand side of the body and keeps out of the way of the major controls.
      The close up filters come as a set of 3 from SRB Photographic although I only use the lowest strength one normally. The 80mm Zenzanon focuses pretty close so I rarely resort to the filters but they are useful to have.

    Hi Steve. Another fantastic Vlog! I discovered your channel very recently, and have watched the entire series in the last few days. Such an inspiration!
    I was 'gifted' a Bronica ETRS earlier this year, and your vlog has given me the confidence I needed to start shooting medium format landscapes again.
    Only have the standard 75mm f2.8 lens at the moment, but looking to add to the kit very soon. Would you suggest a wide angle 40 or 50 - or a telephoto 150mm as my next lens purchase?
    Thanks again for the great content. I look forward to many more! Cheers from New Zealand :-)

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  7 років тому

      Thanks Wayne, the 645 format is very compact and I shot with Mamiya 645's for many years. I too started with just a standard lens then due to cost only managed to add a telephoto but still got a lot of good images.
      As to whether a wide angle or telephoto would be best it really depends on what you shoot. When I work in the forest I rarely need a wide lens and usually prefer the short telephotos to isolate details. If however it is the open scenes you want then a 40 or 50 would be perfect.

    Re: High Tripods and Waist Level Finders
    In theory you can keep the WLF, extend your tripod very high and lay the camera on its side with the 3-way head or most ball heads, but in practice it is neither the upside-down and backwards that I'm used to with the view camera, or the laterally reversed typical WLF view, so my brain actively rebels trying to compose the frame every time I do that. I'm never as confident in my composition in those situations. I'm a bit of a gram-counter when it comes to packing my bag for the day, and typically will leave the prism finder at home. Often, a full day in the mountains trekking over hill and dale will make you keenly aware of weight.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  6 років тому

      I'm also a bit of a weight fanatic and will often leave out bits of kit to make the load more bearable. It's funny how there's a tipping point where the bag is suddenly a burden and removing just one item restores the balance. I do find the prism head useful for longer lenses in particular but could live without it if weight was the primary concern.

I rarely miss a day and if there is no new one yet I rewatch one of my favorites! I'm 70 years old and in poor health but I wish I were able to go with you on one of your sojurnes. I hope you live another 100 years and enjoy good health to pursue your photography!!

  • @philipculbertson55

    Excuse the silly questions but I don't understand some things about the film camera. You sometimes shoot a certain type film and then switch on the next frame you shoot color (such as at 3.00 in the video). How does that work? Does that mean you finished the BW roll (I'm assuming roll film) and then switched or is there a way to have two different film types in the camera? And what does it mean when you say you took two frames. Does that mean two separate images or can you expose the same image twice some how? I'm trying to educate myself on film cameras since my only film experience was with 35mm film.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  6 років тому

      Hi Philip. The Bronica I use is designed with interchangeable film backs so I can swap between different rolls without having to take all 12 shots first. This is extremely useful as it allows me to pick the right film for each shot and you can have as many film backs as you like. I currently have 3 backs which is as much as I typically want to carry and usually use a mix of colour negative, slide and black and white film.
      Hope that helps 🙂

    Hi Steve, gread video, it takes me back to my olden days when I shot with a Broni SQAi. I have just returned to MF but in the digital world with the Fuji GFX 50S I love the MF way of working. You mentioned at one point using Lightroom on an image, presumably you are scanning the negs?

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  7 років тому +1

      That Fuji looks brilliant and you are right that medium format is largely all about a way of working rather than the size of the sensor.
      I scan my film using an Epson v700 then work on them in Lightroom using the same processes I would for digital except for sharpening which needs to be a lot more aggressive.

    • @Topsyrm
      @Topsyrm 7 років тому

      Its every bit as good as it looks, probably needs a better photographer behind it though. I'll get there. I'm amazed at some of the shots you see that I would probably walk straight by. More practice required in the looking/seeing I think. Keep the vids coming, particularly the Broni stuff.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  7 років тому +1

      I find that using a waist level finder I see a lot more shots than squinting through a small viewfinder. I think it is something to do with cutting out the rest of the scene and not getting distracted by the surroundings.
      A lot of people seem to be missing the point about the Fuji and think it is all about the high resolution sensor.

    • @Topsyrm
      @Topsyrm 7 років тому

      Indeed and the tilty flippy screen enables one to mimic the WLF particularly if one uses a loupe for fine detail.

    Hi. C41 and E6 are easier to develop by yourself since they are standard processes and you can't fiddle about with them. The only difficulty is that you have to maintain the water bath at 38*C. You can find kits online at very reasonable prices and they last a fair bit. You should give it a go :)

      Steve O'Nions Thank you so much for replying....I cannot tell you how much I love your promos. They combine the things I love about shows on photography....a sharing of knowledge, passion and technique. Your b-roll is awesome and I know how annoying it can be to get all of the b-roll when you are out shooting photographs. I watch you, because you inspire me to get out and shoot. Leicas, Hassey’s, Phase One’s sitting on shelves will never take as good an image as a 10mp camera that is out in the field. I am just re-discovering film and doing it with MF for the first time. That is why I asked about your Bronica. I don’t think I’m prepared to go to 4x5, but I”m truly enjoying the MF journey. Keep up the great work. And thank you for your service.
