  • Landscape photography can be very frustrating when you have built up your expectations and have certain subjects in mind. It's all about adapting to the conditions though and on this occasion I found that using black and white film, specifically Ilford HP5+ delivered the mood I was looking for and made the trip ultimately worthwhile.
    There are no secrets to landscape photography, you just have to persevere and eventually you will succeed.

    Any one of those images would make for a successful day; all three makes it a fabulous day! The black and White film choice was perfect - really shows off the special nature of that kind of film, and the square format was a perfect choice as well. Fantastic! Cheers!

    I'm a new subscriber, having just recently discovered your feed, and I'm really enjoying your videos. I've been shooting B&W for 38 years (the first 20+ years with film) and so appreciate the care and concern in your approach to shooting your landscapes. This video, in particular, is a great reminder to slow down and not get frustrated when the great photos don't immediately lie down at your feet. Thank you for putting these together and sharing them with us. Your work is outstanding.

    It is interesting as to how high the bar needs to be before you release the shutter. It is hard to continually refuse to take shots that you think are only good, rather than exceptional. However, this approach makes a roll of film last quite a long time!

    Lovely video and great photos. Loved the one with the stream and the barn at the end. Would have loved to see that in rollei rpx 25. The orange filter really added pop to that photo. I'm wondering whether you find the high dilution developer contributes to larger grain in your negative.Wonder what it would have looked like in perceptol stock (of course you lose a stop with that).

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  5 років тому

      I’m quite easy going as far as development goes and although there are advantages to be had by using different ones I tend to keep it simple. In the past I have had excellent results with Xtol but prefer the keeping properties of HC-110 and of course there is always Rodinal when I want really sharp grain.

    Hi Steve Thanks for sharing your video on black and white film.I have not long bought coloured filters but never thought of using two together. I have heard you say that you used Fomapan film not knowing about it as I normally buy Ilford. I only found out today where to buy Fomapan and it is much cheaper, Please how do you like it and do you only use it in certain conditions. Thanks again, Regards Ken

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  5 років тому

      Hi Ken. In terms of B&W filters I wouldn’t use two together unless I wanted to substitute them for a neutral density.
      When it comes to Fomapan I’d only use it when I wanted an older film effect with more grain. It is also quite a soft material and scratches easily so careful handling is a must. Normally I would stick to Ilford and Kodak which are both higher quality products.

    That first shot was incredible. It almost looked as if it were painted in black and white rather than a photo. I'm interested in square cropping. I have difficulty imagining a scene in a square aspect. I wondered since you shoot a lot of square format shots because of your equipment, do you have any rule of thumb for when a square format may work?

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  6 років тому

      Hi Philip. I find it a lot easier to shoot square format images if that is the native aspect ratio of the camera itself. I don’t usually crop down from other formats but it can be done successfully if you leave plenty of room when you take the shot. As far as visualisation goes I look for images that are balanced with no tension in the frame. That is to say the corners need to keep the image contained and draw the viewer towards the centre or along one of the diagonals.

  • @adrianalvarez9069
    @adrianalvarez9069 5 років тому

    Hello Steve!
    That photograph with the lonely tree is absolutely stunning! I have one question though, about the use of the orange filter. I recently bought a Mamiya 654 Pro and I am getting ready for a two-month road trip in the US and I won't be using digitial at all.
    Regarding the filter, how much of darkening was made on that sky during postproduction and to what extent did the filter darken the sky at the moment of taking the shot? I am just wondering because buying an orange filter for the trip cost me 32 Dollars, but if can spare it, that is money that can go on buying more film.
    Thank you in advance and cheers from Madrid!

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  5 років тому

      That’s a very good question Adrian. I did a lot of work on light room to enhance the effect of the filter as it would have needed a deep red 25 to get close to that effect. The problem with the orange and red filters is they darken shadow areas a lot which makes for a very contrasty image. The orange filter got me close to what I was after and gave good separation with the clouds. A polariser would help too if the angle of the sun is correct but it will darken corners excessively with a wideangle lens.

    • @adrianalvarez9069
      @adrianalvarez9069 5 років тому +1

      @@SteveONions That is interesting, indeed.
      Do you think that level of separation and darkening could be achieved just using postproduction techniques, sparing the use of the filter, if I get a flat and low-contrast negative during the developing process?
      Is there any chance you could share with me a copy of the original scan (before any postproduction work was done) to study the native effect of the filter? A low res jpeg would be enough.
      Again, thank you in advance and also thanks for your quick response!

    I really liked the first image,the valley one. It resembles the texture very well. What is the difference between yellow and orange filter? And how should we develop to get similar images in b&w?

    • @SteveONions

      The difference between orange and yellow is quite subtle unlike red and yellow which is more obvious. With yellow you have a darkening of blue skies and lightening of grass, foliage etc and only a slight deepening of shadows (which are usually composed of blue light). Orange will give greater contrast and darken shadows further.
      A yellow filter could be considered as an option for most shots without too much problem but orange and red could make it hard to work on in post process unless you were looking for a lot of contrast.
      It also depends on the conditions obviously, in dull weather it makes little difference.

    Nice video Steve. I applaud you for being so selective, I’d have shot a few rolls in that beautiful landscape. I think it also has to do with what your “normal” environment is. For me, that was something I would have been much less selective about.

      Thanks Bill. I certainly could have taken a lot more images but it didn't feel right and to be honest the slow start to the day sapped a lot of enthusiasm. Had we gone directly to Keld and ditched the car I'm sure it would have been a more successful trip but that's the lesson for next time.

    Good work Steve! Your videos always encourage me to get out there and keep shooting. Beyond that, to shoot different ways and see what that can produce. I wonder, do you ever try 5x7 format? I've been curious about it myself, having considered the oddball large format for no reasonable reason. I haven't figured out a workable solution to seeing it while taking the shot. A crop can always be applied afterwords of course, but it's nice to see the framing while shooting. Top contender for achieving this at the moment is liveview on the camera, and adding some kind of improvised cardboard/paper mask to the back screen to get there.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  6 років тому

      The 5x7 format is interesting especially when you can get here using an extension back for a 4x5. The proportions are just about perfect too and at nearly twice the surface area of 4x5 the quality should be excellent. Pity the film choices are so limited.

    Hi Steve do you have a favourite camera or film format that you use

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  6 років тому

      It is probably the 6x6 120 format Derek as I've always liked square images and medium format has enough quality to make good sized prints. The Bronica SQA (and the Hasselblad 501 I used to use) is very versatile and robust but it does weigh a lot, so much so that my 4x5 outfit is easier to take on long trips.

    Definitely going from strength to strength with your videos. I got to Martin Mere at 5.00am about 3 weeks ago hoping to get some warblers, buntings and spring passage birds. I saw them all but never got on one one of them with my camera, but got a decent landscape of the back lane. It happens, and it was still a good morning out.
    Was that the place The Houghton Weavers sing about? Ee by gum but it’s Keld, Ee by gum but it’s Keld, mi 'ands are like stone, mi feet are like lead, I ain’t bin warm sin I left mi bed. I get reet up te fire as near as I’m allowed, that I may got gradely warm at last. Ee by gum but Im Keld?
    Brilliant video with some stunning images as always. HP5+ is my go to film for 35mm but I don’t use it much at 120, I thinks that’s because I do use it so much in my other cameras.

      @SteveONions  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Mark. I don't know of another Keld and it is pretty chilly up there so it probably is the place they sang about. I'm glad I shot with HP5+ as it made such a difference with shutter speeds especially when you add in the filters.

      Steve O'Nions Sorry Steve, it was a bit of a joke, they sing Keld instead of cold in the song, but thinking about it as it’s a Lancashire dialect song there’s no reason you would have heard of it. So as a special treat:

    I don't feels so bad now knowing that I'm not alone in going out for a day and not finishing a roll of 120. I'm not a lover of the square format but will agree whole heartedly some scenery just cries out for 2 1/4 square. Your choice of film speed is understood for the conditions however iso 400 has never been a go to film speed, choosing to use slower iso's in the 50 to 160 range. Interesting that you are using a lens multiplier with the 400 iso I'd be concerned with more camera shake. Excellent video thank you, I've given a like and hit the subscribe.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  3 роки тому

      Thanks Robert. I never get any shake with the Bronica, partly due to the lead shutters and mirror lockup. I like to use slower films at times but the weather often means a faster speed is needed.

      @@SteveONions Thanks for your reply, yes a definite advantage with mirror lockup and I think you ment leaf shutter. My RB67 although sounds massive the image has already been captured. B&W is not as easy to shoot as colour. You must definitely film test. For instance, I shoot HP-5 at 150 with development time slightly modified from the recommended, giving much better results.

    • @SteveONions
      @SteveONions  5 років тому

      I also modified film speed a lot more when I was 100% analogue and printed in my darkroom. With scanning I prefer a thinner negative so shoot one frame at box speed then increase exposure depending on the scene. The scanning process can retrieve a lot more information from thin negatives than was ever possible in the darkroom, even with pre-flashing. Highlights are the opposite with optical printing being superior and demonstrating much smoother tonal transitions.

    • @Igaluit
      @Igaluit 5 років тому +1

      I see. I've only scanned colour slides so I have no experience with this. I have wondered whether one could do film tests with a scanner by finding maximium black from the scan of a blank frame and then applying the same adjustment to all one's shots to see how they look in order to adjust film speed. But, your results looks so good that maybe producing a thinner negative is the way to go.

    A great watches usual and a lot to learn, many thanks Steve. I know this vlog was some five years ago that's a good thing because I want to have a gripe about Google insisting that one watches adverts all the time now. UA-cam was, as we know, set up to be a totally non-profit making outlet and to hijack it like Google has, is an abomination. The excuse given is that the poor people who are putting their videos on UA-cam are not getting any remuneration; but what it's really happening is Google is getting a huge increase (quite unneeded) in their absolute fortune. I hope you don't mind my using your channel to make this gripe, but as it's the channel that I most watch, it comes to mind here, please delete it if you want to Steve. Thanks again Steve for these, they make a great watch from many points of View. Mark

      Thanks for commenting Mark, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately advertising is everywhere and revenues to the creators are not very high. If you don’t have adverts turned on Google doesn’t promote your videos so you gradually fade away and nobody watches you 🙁
