We spent a day with Toronto native, Jalisa Luces-Mendes, a part-time researcher and fashion line owner. WATCH NEXT: Making it in London - bit.ly/2x8EuAV
Freddy Jones We all know why they chose her. It's because she makes nickers for men who want to become women and women who take testosterone and you know, them people. I can't believe VICE would misrepresent a whole community, just because they want to pick someone that wears mens boxers or something
This series would be cooler if it went more in depth with 2 or 3 different people from different walks of life, maybe one high class, one middle class and one low class. Also if it were longer, maybe 8-12 or 14 minutes. Understandably the majority of people have a short attention span, but arguably if it's interesting enough people will watch it because of this subject matter.
Progamer Kpop Chef very well said I agree with you.I would sure watch it if it was different class of people expressing their views on living in Toronto.
Lol why would you pick such an abnormal case to demonstrate an average? She lives at home!! What are her expenses like??? YOU DON'T EVEN SAY! WHAT IS THE POINT IN THIS?!?!
Sam L this video drove me nuts. I was making 1500 before tax as a cook and rented an apartment sharing with two other people for 750/month in the annex and still made it work and that was in 2009!! She could totally afford a 850/month apartment but chooses not to because she's privileged enough not to have to, her smirk like, "yeah can you believe it?!" at the end made me want to scream. Lastly, TTC isn't that unreliable she just chooses not to use it. Jeez Vice put a little more effort into finding your subjects.
while i agree This is a terrible case to use for making it in Toronto, a lot has changed since 2009. for example if you dont want to live in a crack den, a bachelor is at least 1000 likely 1100 plus hydro, and the TTC has dropped in dependability by over 50 percent in a little over five years. So while this person is a complete joke as far as what it takes to make it in Toronto (especially since she has not made it) But your whole privileged criticism is not warranted.
Jonathan Chalmers privilege: a right, immunity, or benefit enjoyed only by a person beyond the advantages of most. Her parents live in Toronto. She has the privilege of living at home over many (like me at the time) did not. So I think my privileged comment is warranted, she has the privilege to say, "no, I don't want to pay $850/month" and doesn't have to because she lives with her parents. I couldn't afford a bachelor at the time either that's why I lived with two other people. I also tried to live relatively close to where I worked so I could bike, that's also an option if you're trying to save money.
So she runs an incredibly niche and unknown company, spends "$30" a day on food and can't find a way to make her work less costly, eats out once a month and "makes" It between $20-25 and then complains that she doesn't earn enough/doesn't have enough money? The problem isn't the cost of living its her
@@jsudlow12 okay, you must be an idiot. She clearly pays taxes, so how is she not contributing to the healthcare??? What's a real job? Owning a business (even if it's as niche as this) is still a job. Did you miss the part where she's also an RA at a university? Lol people like you are judgmental as shit, and probably don't contribute to the planet.
Another good way to cut expense is to cook at home then pack the lunch instead of buying your lunch. Since she lives at home, get her mother to cook if shes too busy and pack the left overs. This girl owns a car and still takes UBER and transit. Cut the UBER, pack your own lunch and bring your own coffee from home.
MN and if you spend too much with UBER or Fuel, just buy a bike and be healthy, if you wake up earlier you'll not need rush and get swet going by bike.
Yeah I drive an Altima in from Pickering to downtown every day for work and only have to fill up every 2 weeks! This girl must be justifying her Uber spending like it's the equivalent of driving yourself.
Its interesting she says she does not eat out a lot, but says she buy food from a store/cafe every day for breakfast/lunch? If she made her own breakfast/lunch everyday she could probably save $5+ a day or $150 a month. None of what she has listed explains for $1,800 a month in expenses. Maybe $500-1,000 is accounted for in everything she listed but you got a pretty big gap. My guess is she is sinking her money into her underwear brand and does not have anything left to spend on herself.
Levi in the major cities in Canada I can see it costing $700 a month prepping your own meals, if you chose to eat out everyday the cost would be a little over $1,000 a month
Alexis Jankowski Even working full time, the cost of living in Toronto is pretty high. Toronto and Vancouver consistently rank high in North American cities with the highest cost of living.
J. L. Fox Yes. I think that is just a common trend in many major North American cities at the moment. I know many people who work a couple of part time jobs in an attempt to string together enough income to get by on.
I bet it is! But we lose that perspective of the true cost of living for an individual or couple working full-time living on their own. I feel like this video doesn't give us a good idea of the real cost of living. It just looks like, "Hey, here is this part-time researcher who lives with her parents! Life is a struggle!" It is, but let's see how much! Really!
I checked out at " up to $30 a day on food".. Shitty money management, then again the poor thing can't go without her 3 dollar cup of hot chocolate... smh
shaiwn not really. She chose the job, she isn’t doing it out of necessity. It’s not really a job you’d have to survive per say. Maybe it’s hard to find a suitable job in Toronto, so I won’t judge her not knowing her situation. But it is a little head scratching
Out of all the people in this beautiful, diverse city to do a piece on you chose the 26 year old, part time university researcher that says, "I create undergarments for people who fight gender norms." She was boring and full of bullshit pity party excuses about why she still lives at home. Come on Vice you used to be better than this.
@Breanna Me and some of my friends have this one hang out spot which while not close to anyone of us is best place for us to meetup. I have the longest trip by kilometers and it takes me 30 minutes. Everyone else uses the subway and other TTC services which range from 45-90 minutes. TTC is slow.
For anyone not familiar with what going on in Toronto real-estate market here the rundown. Toronto is still in the middle of a housing crisis, it the not unheard off if you still living with your parent. It just simply not financially viable to own your own home in the current market, since even the area 50-70km away from the city center still cost $1'000'000-$1'500'000 due to new residential building up and further gentrification to drive the housing market up. if you want reasonable price for houses, you might as well don't live in Toronto. The problem is that the Chinese real estate are everywhere in Toronto and it just going to keep going up until the government plug it up by implementing the same rule of limited mortgage lending and increase taxes on foreign purchase like they did in Vancouver. It also certainly didn't help that Toronto is the prime location for all immigrant to go to when they enter the countries, since there are already a establish community for almost all nationality for migrant to integrate into. sources: Living there and being part of the problem.
The Camper problem is that the Canadian economy depends a lot real estate. The government won't do shit because by doing anything they will hurt their own economy . But this is not just a Toronto problem, it's a whole western world problem. The same thing is happening in Europe too. The eventual result will be cities full of rich people with empty service jobs. Since no one earning such a small wage will ever be able to afford to live in these cities. Unless your a black lesbian who makes underwear for people who don't know what sex they are and live at home with mummy and daddy.
The Camper this problem is not just a Canada thing a lot major metropolitan areas especially in western countries are going through inflation and high cost of living. A lot of foreign investors and businessmen buy up real estate and businesses which raises the value of housing and rent. San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Parts of New Jersey, Texas, and etc are all going through this transition. Even people that work jobs that pay 6 figure salaries or that are looked at as high paying jobs do not have the same quality of life in purchasing power as they did 20 to 30 years ago. It seems like now there are only two classes of people which are the rich and poor. Middle class is a term that is slowly disappearing especially when comparing real economic standards today.
Oh no. Let's not get into the foreign students who's parents are in the real estate industry. I see them walking around in designer everywhere in Toronto.
This is a terrible video. Why do I feel like this video has been recycled? Vice, you can't feature someone who is working part-time and living at home to show how expensive it is to live in Toronto. I'm really disappointed! To viewers who are interested at how expensive it is to live in Toronto, let me give you a breakdown. I recently moved back from NYC and except for rent/housing prices, I think Toronto is comparable. IMO what's making Toronto expensive is the ever increasing housing prices. Decent detached homes in Toronto costs well over $1M these days so it becomes impossible for millennials to purchase houses in Toronto and can't afford to buy houses in the neighbourhood they grew up.
I feel this video is extremely whiny. I'd be a bit more interested to see a video on someone who works full time and is cost efficient. This person is terrible at budgeting, lives at home, and only works part time, so I don't feel sorry for them. $30 a day on food on a busy day? I spend $50 a week on food for the whole week and I live an hour outside of Toronto in the GTA, so same food prices. Just prepare your own food and bring it with you, it's also way more healthy. Using uber instead of public transit? Sure public transit isn't 24 hrs but why does she need to see her seamstress outside of the hours of public transit? Housing is very expensive in the GTA and Toronto but that's what you have to pay to live in a booming city, that attracts many educated and talented people from all over Canada and the world. A city is a very competitive climate, where supply and demand drive up living costs. The trend is less and less people live in the rural areas, and more and more people are moving closer to the city because of jobs and opportunities. You pay for being in that environment of a concentrated talent pool. That's why it's expensive, you have to earn it. If you can only get part time work, get a second part time job. I am also starting up my own company, I have an office job to help with start up costs. Complaining about the current state of affairs will not change it, problem solving your way to your goals will.
Exactly. I also live in the GTA, and it isn't that expensive. Who spends that much on lunch? Go to subway and you can buy a sandwich, drink, and soup for $5. The bus system is actually pretty reliable, and cheap.
She seems very irresponsible with her money. She comments that she only goes out to eat once a month and will not spend any more than $25 but then casually mentions that she can spend $30 on any given day for food eating out for lunch as if that isn't eating out. That is some hardcore cognitive dissonance
I agree with you except for the last part. Cities are expensive because landlords want to take advantage of more affluent professionals who move to the city and jack up prices and do what they can to getbrid of og tenants. But yea she could've just cooked her food, find a better job( I imagine how hard and frustrating it can be as I'm also trying to find a job) and she can just take mass transit, she lives in a city with one of the best mass transit systems in North America!
I'm really disappointed Vice. Out of everyone in this diverse city you chose to focus the Toronto episode of this series on this whack-job. Part time job probably at a b list university or college that calls itself one and a "business" making under garments for people who defy gender norms? Really Vice? This is how you want people to see Toronto! Couldn't you find someone with a real job that we could at least relate to without triggering?
I'm sure they can but she is hitting a niche market. I can tell you in many liberal cities their are plenty of people who would be willing to buy these. So why not?
So what you're telling me is if you have parents who live in Toronto, you can spend $30 a day on junk food and sell bulgeless men's underwear in an effort to look like you're actually doing something AND live in Toronto? Sign me up.
This is so funny. 😂 "Making it" implies that you're not directly financially dependent on anyone else. There's nothing wrong with living with your parents but the video's not called "living with your parents in Toronto." 2/10
This video completely misrepresents Canada, especially to our American friends. In what universe would someone making $2500 a month in this country be paying 50% income tax? This is both insane and not true. With tax refunds and programs she should be paying next to no tax, especially if much of that is through this business she claims to run. Also, what the hell doe she mean that Toronto's transportation is unreliable and expensive? We have busses, streetcars, and a subway system. All of it costs $3 and you can transfer from one form of transportation to the next. If you can show me the Uber app where you can get from one end of North America's fourth most populous city to the other for $3, I'd love to know if it's available in the App Store. On top of this, she says she was expecting to own a house by 26. At an income of $2500? This isn't possible anywhere in a major North American city. I respect her trying to forge her own brand and trying to go out and do her own thing but the housing market in Toronto is just that, a market. If the company isn't providing much of an income you shouldn't just be handed a house because you want one that's insane. I hope her business takes off and does well, that would be great. But this video completely misrepresents Toronto and Canada as a whole, when the truth is it's no different than any other major city in Canada or the US.
G G If you didn't notice, Toronto isn't a city known for being bike friendly, nor does the city have bike an abundance of bike lanes. The TTC/Car becomes a mandatory expense for some people.
optimumperformance Ever since the Disney and Fox News buying stake of vice, I and other longtime vbs and youtube subs premillion constantly pointed this out. One of the cocreators of Vice is disgusted how its gone to VERY leftwing style brainwashing similar to msnbc content..and also the other guy doesnt even attach his name like shane does... the hbo bits are usually centered but vice youtube and tv channel is definitely being controlled by leftwing media corporations now...pushing anti white and very SJW topics like this veiled transgender promotion...this is.not a conspiracy, been here done that since vbsTv channel days
I'm 28, live in western Europe and recently moved back in with my parents. I cannot express how much I miss my freedom. Before, I had a shitty one bedroom apartment, but my god... that feels like a palace at the moment. Not to speak of the looks that I get when I tell people that I live at home. But this way, I hope to save up some money so that I can buy a place in a year or two. The amount that I save plus the mortgage that I will be given will be enough to buy a decent apartment. Buying a place in your twenties, without making some big sacrifices, is just not feasible for most people at the moment.
I hear you. I moved out at 17, returned to my parents a couple years later, got stuck in a dead end job on night shifts (the pay was good but that's no life for the long term). Quit and went to trades school to become an auto mecanic. Found a day job but the pay was shit and the raises were laughable. Decided there was no future in my parents town and moved to Montreal on my own. Full time day job with great pay and lots of opportunity for growth in a big company that's been around for 3/4 a century. I've saved a decent amount when I was at my parents and have a nice safety cushion incase things go sideways and the means to put a downpayment on a house if that ever becomes a desire. I'm in a great place right now but I can't express the dread I felt going home to my parents every day like I was some man baby. Most people looked down on my situation (white french canadians tend to kick their kids out at 18 in quebec). One guy at work though was very supportive and was saying he'd do the same with his kids. This guy was one of the more wealthy types and had a good sense for money. Anyways once I got to montreal I found it funny because a lot of immigrants have cultures of supporting their own and it's actually uncommon for kids to move out before their twenties. Some discourage leaving at all LOL. Anyways these guys get it, that's how your kids get a fighting chance now days. It's a family effort to invest in your kids future.
Afghan You are so lucky you get to save your money. Cry me a river. I live at home I'm twenty and I literally can't leave or my mum would be homeless she's on disability so when I got a settlement from criminal injuries 20,000$ it almost all went to bills in a joint account with her. I have no choice. No options. I am happy to help but sometimes it's a real struggle...
Chloweful Naturally, I am lucky in many many ways. I did not mean to come across as ungrateful and fully realise that there are many people out there (like you) who have it considerably more difficult. I can only imagine how difficult things might for you and your mother. Wish you all the best. I only wanted to point out that things like house ownership for young people is not what it used to be 30 or 40 years ago. Back then, it was far more accessible than it is now.
Sneaky Pewpz Respect for your perseverance. That's exactly the mentality I try to have whenever I feel down about having to live with my parents. It's just the word we live in now. I try to accept it, work hard, save as much as possible in order to build a solid foundation for an independent life in the near future. Hopefully that will also enable me to help my parents if they ever need it.
I would normally tell a young person that perhaps they may want to move to another town or a more rural area to save money, but if you're working in the fashion industry like Jalisa you have to be in a big city because the fashion industry thrives in big cities. It has to be there. And it's one of the most competitive fields in the world. I've had many friends who've worked in this industry, one who was my manager at a retail appliance store before she got an opportunity to take her designs to a top design house in London and had to be ready to hop on a plane to London in two days. So she quit her job in Los Angeles, headed to London, and the rest is history. She's now a very well respected designer. But, see, she was starting to make waves in L.A., and had this opportunity which demanded she drop everything she was doing and take that trip. It's hard to live in big cities. It's very expensive. Everything is. But it's where certain industries thrive. If you live in Podunk, Iowa and you want to be a stockbroker, guess what? You've going to have to head to Manhattan. Big cities are where a lot of things still happen. It's hard even for professionals to afford, and harder still for younger people trying to get their wings in life. I wish everyone the best. On the subject of Toronto in particular, I have family there and have visited many a time. Great town. I'd move there if I didn't have so many obligations here in Los Angeles. I never realized their public transportation was so bad as I never used it there except for taking the subway a couple times and wasn't in a hurry so didn't take note of its punctuality. There is something for everyone in Toronto. I think a lot of Americans overlook Canada, but there's a lot we can learn from our neighbors up north. They have the right idea about guns and healthcare, and I wish more Americans could consider the Canadian POV on these issues.
As a toronto native myself, I don't think this is the most accurate portrayal of what its like to live in toronto for the average person. Public transit is expensive but overall pretty reliable and cheaper than driving across the city. Biking (which is what I personally do) is even cheaper and faster, if you are willing to be careful around cars (when there aren't bike lanes and such). Renting an apartment is definitely very expensive, especially if you want to be in a good area, so I would agree with her that you make certain sacrifices when you decide to live in Toronto, in my opinion it can be worth it because its a a great city, but you just have to weigh your priorities. If you hunt, there still are places with good cheap food, but with gentrification things keep getting more pricy, so the thought of owning a house at this point is pretty far fetched for most.
23 and still living at home on Weston Rd. Rent is just too expensive for me at the moment. I've been on the low so I'm taking my time. Mental health and all. I can't relate to a lot of people as well so I have to work on that if I want to "make it".
$30 a day on food? Ridiculous. I live in rental in Toronto alone and spend max $35 on food a week including food for my cat. I cook all my food... Restaurant eating is a scam.
is she going to waterloo when she says west end?! i live in the east and go to missausaga for work everyday and back, but i only fuel up every week. and a full tank only costs around $80.....
I was also questioning how big Toronto was haha, she is using an entire tank of gas driving across town twice... I had to look up how big Toronto was and realized she is full of shit.
lol I live in richmond hill, north of toronto and I go to university in London (ontario), around 2-3hours for toronto downtown and that doesn't even use up a whole tank
She is really limiting her market with the whole I only make undergarments for non gender conforming people. That is a super small customer base. Also no one said you can't just buy regular boxers.....
But that's the thing, sometimes ppl aren't satisfied with boxers you'd find in a store like Target or Walmart. Those are made with the binary genders in mind and sometimes that's offputting or it's not very fitting if someone's body is going through hormone therapy. There's a need for the custom undergarments she makes among some of the trans community too. I appreciate that someone like this exists out there doing this sort of thing.
yeah that was confusing for me too.. in a 2006 civic i can get from the outskirts of the GTA to the city center and back, and use barely half a tank of gas.
I live in Toronto and this video is pretty standard. Even though the streetcars could be unreliable, for a consistent shift if you have to work anywhere, it's pretty easy to plan your route to work. Everything else I can agree with in this video of what it costs as well as the housing prices rising and not wanting to buy a house, especially that house sales are declining this year by a lot.
Okay this is just my opinion. I was born and raised in Toronto and I wouldn't call TTC unreliable, plus compared to the rest of the world we only pay 1 flat fare not by distance and its pretty affordable. Also she doesn't seem like a person that is good at saving.
I like this series. I hope they have more. I will say though it would be great if they showed people with more "normal" jobs. The 3 of these videos Ive seen were ppl in fashion, digital arts, and academician in sociology. It would be great to see people who are financial analysts, nurses, or bus drivers.
Just like most people commenting here, I'm calling bullshit. I have lived in Toronto for a total of maybe 15 years. The public transit actually does run 24/7, although as you would expect there is less service during the less busy times. If she were to take public transit to her tailor instead of driving, it would be between $6 and $7 round trip (depending on whether she bought tokens at a discount or paid the full cash fair.) The distance from Scarborough (east end) to Etobicoke (west end) is about 30 km. Her trip to her tailor's is likely shorter than that, but let's just say it's 30 km each way. Her car looks like a small hatchback, so it's probably good on gas. I've got a very efficient car that goes 600 km on just $45 of gas. Let's assume her car isn't as efficient as mine and only gets 500 km out of $50 of gas. That's still only $6 in gas for a round trip all the way across the city and back. Even if we round that estimate up to $10, it's still a far cry from her $40 to $50 estimate! This also brings up another question: Why is she taking Uber all the time when she has her own car? Surely driving your own car is cheaper than hiring an Uber! Also, I don't get how she thinks she only goes out for food once per month. She said earlier on that she spends at least $8 (up to $30) every single day on eating food out. I guess it doesn't count if it's breakfast, lunch or a snack? I'm definitely not a rich person, but I'm supporting a family of three on my single income here in Toronto. We've got a two bedroom place with a back yard, we have a brand new car and have five pets. We try to watch our budget, like most sane people, but we're far from struggling. We always cover our expenses, buy our son lots of toys and still manage to put aside money in savings every month. We've even taken two cross country family trips this year! The woman in this video is probably going to lose her business due to poor money management.
The key to afford living in Toronto: Don't live in Old Toronto!! For those that don't know, Old Toronto is one of our six districts/boroughs that make up the city, and it's the "Manhattan" of Toronto... It's attractive, but expensive. There's much more affordable parts of this giant city
I wish Vice would show somebody who struggles because of economic reasons not because of their stupidity, but that wouldn't be click-baity enough I guess...
Similar scenario to whats happening to the major cities on the East Coast of Australia (Eg. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane). Much like Canada, the idea of owning your own home in Australia is becoming something that young Australian's are finding it increasing difficult to obtain
Im 22 work at st michaels hospital, no debt, this is my first year of working and im going to make 70k before tax. I share a condo with my brother that my mom rents out to me for $700/month at college park. I have alot of extra cash at the end of the month because I walk or bike to work. I can afford to rent my own condo around $1500/month if i wanted to and still have extra cash. In a couple years if I save up for a downpayment I can buy myself a condo. Its all possible for me and im your average young professional. My question is this. Why live in a city that you cant afford? I didnt choose to live here, I only live here because of work. I much would rather live in the west. In a couple years I might just commute, and live at home.
Do people not consider takeaway eating out? In the beginning of the video, she says she buys food every day to the tune of 8-30 dollars but then at 2:10 she says she only eats out once a month? In my mind takeaway food should be included in eating out.
I find it difficult to relate to someone who's family has "multiple rental properties" in Toronto. Also, how is she "making it" ? She lives at home. You don't need to interview someone living at home: 46% of Canada is living at home right now, normal people know how to live at home.
Get a real job...You want to live in Toronto comfortably you should pick a career that has opportunities to make over $100k/year. Think software engineering, banker, analyst, marketing, project manager.
Mike the Ted Turner the Rupert Murdoch's the Bill Gates the Donald Trump's the Mark Zuckerberg of the world do not work for other people they own shitt not everybody wants to work for somebody else.
Yeah, she should just get herself a full-time job that pays 150k/y. It can't be that hard right? Just knock on some doors like the people of previous generations did.
SaeS De Honos Perhaps before putting forth such arguments you should actually take a closer look at how much of the general population actually fits within that income bracket. Not many even when including university graduates.
in the beginning she said she eats out everyday, then towards the end she said she only eats out once a month because of money... shocker that someone working part time lives with family. this episode is a waste because it's not a fair example. PS so far every episode in this series I've seen show the people eating out everyday, so they obviously aren't struggling.
Just $8 omg you can barely buy a burger without drinks or fries. Having own business is great but its even more great when you love the work you do.Toronto is so expensive they will raise the minimum wage to $15/hr but I have a feeling they will raise the price of Goods and Services also.
Yo cross city IS NOT A TANK. That problem one. Reality of owning a house in toronto is your parent buy you a house or you have a partner that parents buy you a house. Wages here are not enough to realistically get into the housing market.
It's pretty expensive here, but with an average salary of 59k in the GTA it's not totally unrealistic to buy a property. Especially with a double income.
Alot of hate from people that like to pretend. I know many people renting condos living in massive debt. They like to pretend that they can afford 2000 a month condo but in reality, they are just living check to check. And for those complaining about this part time worker, please remember that there is more part time work out there than actually full time work in Toronto.
im currrently in that same situation. How is it that basment appartments cost more then some bachlor appartments in Toronto. Minimum wage is even worse. The higher it raises the higher the price of living. Theres no break period. TTC isn't 24hrs and not as frequent.
Freddy Jones Vancouver has housing more expensive than Seattle, about the same as San Francisco, with minimum and average wages way lower than either of them.
"Making it" means surviving under bad conditions. To all the people saying this is not "average" because she is part time or "she stays with her parents", yes that's right. This was intentional.
Ok. So, couple things. a) $30 for 1 tea, 1 breakfast sandwhich and a pizza/salad!?!? A combo (sandwhich, tea and a hash brown) is $5.59. If you're going more high end yet your cash flow is low and complaining about expenses....don't go high end? b) Compare those rent prices. Toronto is very much a big city, one of the biggest in North America. Yet it's rent is similar to Atlantas....a much smaller less industrial city. c) You have a car, transit pass and take ubers. Honestly, that seems overkill and a poor use of funds. The insurance, maintenance, and gas are going to kill you. d) Housing costs seem alittle low in this graph, but if it's right that's actually amazing. Please link me those homes. A house in the GTA is going to run you $1.4M, and your commute is going to be 1-1.5 hrs one way. I get prices have risen for Canadians over the years. Housing has def gone up and I believe outpaced inflation. Could be signs of a bubble or pending stagnation that could lead to a market correction. But this person just seems like a poor steward of finances and capital.
CORRECTION - Public transit in Toronto does run 24 hours a day! The subway stops around 1am but there is all night streetcar and bus service. I don't own a car and I'm a night person yet I have never had a problem getting around by TTC. And YES, it is very expensive to live in Toronto! It's becoming more and more like NYC, where the only people who can live there are the rich and the poor, in government housing. The middle class just can't afford to live there. The same is happening to Toronto!
My advice to any one in Toronto is to get a college diploma or university degree, preferably in business but look for job in the financial district in an entry level job like an administrative assistant and work your way up the corporate level for a few years. That’s how most condo I know started off.
is it really that hard to get a jar of instant coffee and mix a spoon of it with some hot water and make a fuckin peanut butter sandwhich at home for lunch? Jesus christ, she's talking like it's too hard to rent in toronto and get by. She runs a niche business part time in a city where the average rent isn't even that much. what's she doing with the rest of the time? Get another part time job, one that pays a bit of money. being able to work soley on your business is a prividghe that comes with success in your business, not a RIGHT. put your head down, work a job, do you genderqueer undies part time and grow up
We spent a day with Toronto native, Jalisa Luces-Mendes, a part-time researcher and fashion line owner. WATCH NEXT: Making it in London - bit.ly/2x8EuAV

We all know why they chose her. It's because she makes nickers for men who want to become women and women who take testosterone and you know, them people.
I can't believe VICE would misrepresent a whole community, just because they want to pick someone that wears mens boxers or something
VICE News good series.
Mexico city soon pleasr
VICE News do one on Vancouver?
THIS IS REPUBLISHED FROM B4
This series would be cooler if it went more in depth with 2 or 3 different people from different walks of life, maybe one high class, one middle class and one low class. Also if it were longer, maybe 8-12 or 14 minutes. Understandably the majority of people have a short attention span, but arguably if it's interesting enough people will watch it because of this subject matter.
Exactly!!
Agreed!
thank you XoXo
Progamer Kpop Chef very well said I agree with you.I would sure watch it if it was different class of people expressing their views on living in Toronto.
yup!! agreed!
Really, VICE? Of all the people in Toronto, you picked a freelancer whose family owns several properties to be the subject of this story?
😭💀💀
Because she’s woke
Exactly@@joelek19
Lol why would you pick such an abnormal case to demonstrate an average? She lives at home!! What are her expenses like??? YOU DON'T EVEN SAY! WHAT IS THE POINT IN THIS?!?!
Sam L exact same thought. Vice usually does better research for case studies!
Jonathan Chalmers privilege:
a right, immunity, or benefit enjoyed only by a person beyond the advantages of most. I also tried to live relatively close to where I worked so I could bike, that's also an option if you're trying to save money.
way to miss the point and bring it back to you.
"Only eats out once a month" "spends 10-30 dollars a day on food" what
I don’t honk she sees coffee and a sandwich as “eating out”, though she should.
Thank you!
Rich spoiled girl...
@@mayabergsdottir9622 what do you mean she works hard for it...who are you to judge?
So she runs an incredibly niche and unknown company, spends "$30" a day on food and can't find a way to make her work less costly, eats out once a month and "makes" It between $20-25 and then complains that she doesn't earn enough/doesn't have enough money? The problem isn't the cost of living its her
Sweaty Uwu the title of the video is hilarious. She isn't making anything just whining.
These are the people who want the rest of us to pay for their healthcare, all cause she wants to make underwear....like wtf get a real job
Lol I spend $35 a week on groceries, I can’t image spending that in a day and I don’t even living in a city as expensive as Toronto
She makes 15000 a year lmao
All the unnecessary purchases..
JӦYの貓 imma stay in brampton, maybe move to Oakville or Mississauga in the future lol
Right , I feel like she should save money on meals by meal prepping
Same I am saying uber is ok but she should only use it sometimes.
Right? Facepalm
she could buy a bicycle to get around.
MN exactly
MN and if you spend too much with UBER or Fuel, just buy a bike and be healthy, if you wake up earlier you'll not need rush and get swet going by bike.
Most millennials are lazy even if they read this advice they most likely still buy food outside, use Uber and spend money on depreciating assets.
She could also drive for uber????? lol
Hell she could even get rid of her car and buy an E-bike which is much cheaper than owning a car and can be faster than mass transit!
Sounds like she needs to meal prep. It's a huge difference!
Michael VR ahaahaha that made me chuckle
Rocio I was thinking the same thing
She's probably never cooked a meal in her life. So she just eats out and then comes home for dinner prepared by her parents.
is your forehead real?
Indeed it is
how exactly does it take one tank of gas to drive "across town"....does she drive a bugatti or something....
holybanana2 No a Honda I think in this video.
Toronto is a really big city with a lot of traffic, so it can take a lot of gas to get from one side to the other.
Her car better have a hole in the tank
yep that's the real question. I used to drive between downtown and Markham every day and a tank would last me 3 days at least...
Giving her mom some money for rent at home? I know I did.
It's probably for an example of what eating out would be.
She doesn't believe in cooking, she is a gender destroyer warrior
Investing is a major key in growing business.
Levi in the major cities in Canada I can see it costing $700 a month prepping your own meals, if you chose to eat out everyday the cost would be a little over $1,000 a month
Wait, what? Are we going to use a part-time worker's example as the typical example for Toronto? Lame!
A part-time worker who's bad at budgeting.
Really!
+J. L. Fox I don't think finding a full time job here is hard.
"I create undergarments for people to fight gender norms..." what does that even mean?
I checked out at " up to $30 a day on food".. Shitty money management, then again the poor thing can't go without her 3 dollar cup of hot chocolate... smh
no one can relate to this lol
i live in toronto my life isnt like hers i live in a bigger house in toronto
I feel bad knocking her even though its a shit job i guess she gotta do what she gotta do
shaiwn not really. She chose the job, she isn’t doing it out of necessity. It’s not really a job you’d have to survive per say. Maybe it’s hard to find a suitable job in Toronto, so I won’t judge her not knowing her situation. But it is a little head scratching
sniperhunt888 then your probably rich cuz I live here in Toronto and our apartment costs us 450k 2 bedroom
@@_Airfuel lol that's actually a good price
Out of all the people in this beautiful, diverse city to do a piece on you chose the 26 year old, part time university researcher that says, "I create undergarments for people who fight gender norms." She was boring and full of bullshit pity party excuses about why she still lives at home. Come on Vice you used to be better than this.
Amen!
living at home while trying to get a business going makes sense
A very niche business at that. I guess making boxers for women is her passion in life.
Ttc has buses running 24/7 and it is very reliable she's just lazy
I think she is talking about the subway and streetcars which are slower and have had recent issues
negZero529 generally the subway is reliable too. Yeah sometimes there's problems, but not often enough to justify buying a car to avoid it.
streetcars have been slow since 1940s
@Breanna Me and some of my friends have this one hang out spot which while not close to anyone of us is best place for us to meetup. I have the longest trip by kilometers and it takes me 30 minutes. Everyone else uses the subway and other TTC services which range from 45-90 minutes. TTC is slow.
what is your point? Is it faster to get there by car?
+The Marko Polo Program
lol yea i see that too, not to mention their very fancy cars. Ever notice that they're always smoking too?? lol
I've seen this video before
This video should be renamed "What it costs to live with your well-to-do parents in Toronto while only wanting to work part time".
"undergarments who fight gender norms"
oh no.....
TheHornet79 welcome to the 21st century boiii
Screw that! I am going back
TheHornet79 why is that a bad thing?
Jacob Smollet hard to make money doing that
Jacob Smollet because she’s a delusional dork who thinks there are more genders than Man and Woman
Couldn't you find someone with a real job that we could at least relate to without triggering?
u mad
I have to agree with you Ryan. My wife is of West Indian descent and she just watched this and she just shook her head.
I literally laughed during the whole video.
After the other 2 I watched I saved my city just for last and they give me this crap. Someone half assed this clearly.
Lmaoo I just burst out laughing at ur description of her ‘business’
poor example
no duh she cant afford it her company has the most niche target demographic imaginable
true true
So people who "defy" gender norms can't wear normal boxers? This chick, her business, and this series; WHACK.
Ceej she'd probably be bankrupt going into business with that attitude lol
damn bro you're getting a bit too triggered over literally nothing
I'm sure they can but she is hitting a niche market. I can tell you in many liberal cities their are plenty of people who would be willing to buy these. So why not?
no wonder she's struggling with finances
The way she talks; WHACK, the way she breathes; WHACK
So what you're telling me is if you have parents who live in Toronto, you can spend $30 a day on junk food and sell bulgeless men's underwear in an effort to look like you're actually doing something AND live in Toronto? Sign me up.
I'd sign you up but im sure you'd find something else to complain about.
lol shut up
Make your sandwiches at home and save!
Better yet, beans and rice, rice and beans.
This is so funny. 😂 "Making it" implies that you're not directly financially dependent on anyone else. There's nothing wrong with living with your parents but the video's not called "living with your parents in Toronto." 2/10
hahahahahahah
Wow. Now I don't trust any of yall documentaries
If you wanna be able to afford stuff you should get a real job
GhostLaughingMan and not eat out every day or make expensive lifestyle choices
Songe Bob BINGO, she's horrible at budgeting
Sponge Bob honestly she could invest in a bike. No satire, but I'm sure that'll save money in medium-shot traveling.
Whats a "real" job Doctor ?
G G If you didn't notice, Toronto isn't a city known for being bike friendly, nor does the city have bike an abundance of bike lanes. The TTC/Car becomes a mandatory expense for some people.
She should get a degree in Lesbian Dance Theory while she's at it
Fourty Mike Mike 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
she would but she's already majoring in Lesbian Underwater Basket Weaving :(
Fourty Mike Mike lol
wo they have those course now?
Is it me or is Vice just getting worse?

obviously not since more people watch now than ever before

optimumperformance I guess this is what happens when you start becoming bigger you start to tone down on intellect and start chasing mass appeal.
optimumperformance Ever since the Disney and Fox News buying stake of vice, I and other longtime vbs and youtube subs premillion constantly pointed this out.
Michael VR Afghanistan is shit so why should he
Chloweful Naturally, I am lucky in many many ways.
Restaurant eating is a scam.
is she going to waterloo when she says west end?! i live in the east and go to missausaga for work everyday and back, but i only fuel up every week. and a full tank only costs around $80.....
leneay I was thinking the same thing. I pay 40 a week and with membership 30-35 a week and my job is mainly driving.
I was also questioning how big Toronto was haha, she is using an entire tank of gas driving across town twice... I had to look up how big Toronto was and realized she is full of shit.
I drive from king to Etobicoke 5 days week cost me $45
lol I live in richmond hill, north of toronto and I go to university in London (ontario), around 2-3hours for toronto downtown and that doesn't even use up a whole tank
is she going to Windsor though lmaoo
The average home in Toronto is not $680K that’s a joke
It’s more like 1.4 Million maybe a house in Barrie is $680 but not Toronto.
theyre probably saying it in american prices, ive seen million dollar homes in toronto but yes its certainly not the average price
USD.
How do you spend 30 dollars a day on food??! Especially if it’s just you!?
1:05 Except the TTC DOES run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is just reduced service between 01:00 and 06:00.
Uhm what kind of car is she driving that cost $40 to go from the east to the west .. issa lie
yeah that was confusing for me too.. in a 2006 civic i can get from the outskirts of the GTA to the city center and back, and use barely half a tank of gas.
"I spend atleast $8 a day on a breakfast sandwich and tea maybe $30 if I want to get a salad or pizza" "I only go out once a month" ....
"working part time and buying coffee everyday, I can't afford to live in Toronto"
not an accurate representation of Toronto
Enjoying this series!
Housing is extremely cheap in Toronto, if we compare with Asia.
@@AK-tx1vg lol really 🤣
@@AK-tx1vg housing in Toronto is cheap my ass
If she were to take public transit to her tailor instead of driving, it would be between $6 and $7 round trip (depending on whether she bought tokens at a discount or paid the full cash fair.)
The distance from Scarborough (east end) to Etobicoke (west end) is about 30 km.
$8 a day on food. Nothing downtown is under $10
I am very confused. She spends around $7-30 per day eating food from outside, then goes out once a month for eating out again ??
Who actually cares about this sort of thing, this is a wast of time and money.
The key to afford living in Toronto: Don't live in Old Toronto!! For those that don't know, Old Toronto is one of our six districts/boroughs that make up the city, and it's the "Manhattan" of Toronto... It's attractive, but expensive. There's much more affordable parts of this giant city
How to live in Toronto:
Step 1- move to Burlington
I wish Vice would show somebody who struggles because of economic reasons not because of their stupidity, but that wouldn't be click-baity enough I guess...
You need to redo this with a true Toronto resident.
$45 to drive across town?? Is she driving an armoured vehicle?? This is garbage.
Similar scenario to whats happening to the major cities on the East Coast of Australia (Eg. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane). Much like Canada, the idea of owning your own home in Australia is becoming something that young Australian's are finding it increasing difficult to obtain
"On busy days I spend $30 on food"........"I only eat out once a month"
To give you a perspective, my family's income is over $150k combined and we are living averagely
She's not eating any salad.
AHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
Why do u have to pay rent to your own parents?
8-30$ on food a day? You should use that in a week. And don't uber, just cycle. And she doesn't even have a fulltime job...
Do people not consider takeaway eating out? In the beginning of the video, she says she buys food every day to the tune of 8-30 dollars but then at 2:10 she says she only eats out once a month? In my mind takeaway food should be included in eating out.
You have BS cost. Are you a business woman? You dont seem to know how to even handle your personal economy.
Mike Indeed
Mike the Ted Turner the Rupert Murdoch's the Bill Gates the Donald Trump's the Mark Zuckerberg of the world do not work for other people they own shitt not everybody wants to work for somebody else.
Sure, but she's probably not going to make it big selling, "gender neutral undergarment" whatever that means.
Mike if fidget Spinners can make a killing then why not...
But what are those software engineers who want to defy gender norms supposed to wear for underwear?
"I create undergarments for people to fight gender norms, and I also work part-time at a university doing research"
*That's it, that is the joke.*
Hears " I make underwear for the mentally ill " I had to go grab some popcorn
pryomatic Man aren't you edgy!
TheChaosBlock Not as edgy as making up imaginary genders and dressing like a woman when you are a man
😵😵😵🤣
Though it may be late or early 5 mins. The transit is pretty reliable. I take a bus daily to school and I rarely have problems
Here in metro Atlanta, gas prices are really low. Around $2.13 per gallon.
Nathan Brown 2.25 Arlington Texas
Nathan Brown or 2:40+ Dallas tx
Damn yeah, here in Toronto it's roughly double that...about $4 USD and Vancouver is about 20% more expensive lol
Same here in the Twin Cities
Picking someone who doesn't work full time, who is creating a business, who lives at home... Not a typical person
GET A REAL JOB.
Yeah, she should just get herself a full-time job that pays 150k/y. It can't be that hard right? Just knock on some doors like the people of previous generations did.
it sure beats selling gender neutral underwear.
SaeS De Honos Perhaps before putting forth such arguments you should actually take a closer look at how much of the general population actually fits within that income bracket. Not many even when including university graduates.
Killacamfoo O.G. Yeah, because those virtual jobs just don't work out! What in your mind is actually a "real job"?
Yeah, "a real job" like coalmining! That's real job! :D
She said she could sometimes spend up to 30 dollars a day eating out. Two minutes later she says I eat out like once a month
in the beginning she said she eats out everyday, then towards the end she said she only eats out once a month because of money... shocker that someone working part time lives with family. this episode is a waste because it's not a fair example. PS so far every episode in this series I've seen show the people eating out everyday, so they obviously aren't struggling.
She doesn't understand that takeout is eating out.
she obviously meant eating out at proper restaurants (over 10-15)
Just $8 omg you can barely buy a burger without drinks or fries. Having own business is great but its even more great when you love the work you do.Toronto is so expensive they will raise the minimum wage to $15/hr but I have a feeling they will raise the price of Goods and Services also.
You could obviously cut a bit on the food
"I only eat out once a month"
Yet you spend 8$ a day on food you could probably make at home...
Toronto has one of the best transit systems in the world. Most buses run 24/7. Subway runs until 2 in the morning.
Horrible video
hahahahahha
Transit is a big issue for me. It's so expensive monthly. Which is why I bike around more.
Toronto is amazing but jeez it is expensive
Lil Lu its like the Canadian equivalent so it makes sense
+Freddy Jones I vouch for this. I think NYC and DC are way more exp.
Freddy Jones Vancouver has housing more expensive than Seattle, about the same as San Francisco, with minimum and average wages way lower than either of them.
Its really not. Just moved back from 8 years in Vancouver and it's not that bad at all. This women needs a real job.
I go on vacation in toronto at least once a year because it's very inexpensive there to me. vancouver on the other hand, ouch.
"Making it" means surviving under bad conditions. To all the people saying this is not "average" because she is part time or "she stays with her parents", yes that's right. This was intentional.
HBO needs to drop Vice
Is this satire?
Hermann Scheer I think they are serious
CORRECTION - Public transit in Toronto does run 24 hours a day! The subway stops around 1am but there is all night streetcar and bus service. I don't own a car and I'm a night person yet I have never had a problem getting around by TTC.
And YES, it is very expensive to live in Toronto! It's becoming more and more like NYC, where the only people who can live there are the rich and the poor, in government housing. The middle class just can't afford to live there. The same is happening to Toronto!
no she is correct. yes there are a FEW buses that run 24-hours but the majority of buses don't run 24-hours
make a sandwich and get a bike
and her mother has a few units ?? hmmmm
My advice to any one in Toronto is to get a college diploma or university degree, preferably in business but look for job in the financial district in an entry level job like an administrative assistant and work your way up the corporate level for a few years. That’s how most condo I know started off.
Can we all just get along? ):
Shitpost MaGee NOOOO
if we do she gets to keep on living in a fantasy world
is it really that hard to get a jar of instant coffee and mix a spoon of it with some hot water and make a fuckin peanut butter sandwhich at home for lunch? Jesus christ, she's talking like it's too hard to rent in toronto and get by. She runs a niche business part time in a city where the average rent isn't even that much. what's she doing with the rest of the time? Get another part time job, one that pays a bit of money. being able to work soley on your business is a prividghe that comes with success in your business, not a RIGHT. put your head down, work a job, do you genderqueer undies part time and grow up
Vancouver is worse
A very real reality when your parents own a rental property and are a safety net for you in case you fall. That's so true.
