"Austrian tenor Martin Mitterrutzner was trained by Brigitte Fassbaender. He was introduced to the world of music and trained from a young age as a treble by Howard Arman. In 2007, still in his early twenties, he was awarded the Eberhard-Wächter Medal of the Vienna State Opera.
He had his first experience on stage aged ten as First Boy in Mozart’s Magic Flute, conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. He made his debut as Ottokar in Johann Strauss’s Zigeunerbaron in the Tiroler Landestheater under the direction of Brigitte Fassbaender in 2003. In 2006 he was offered his first formal engagement and had at first small parts such as Tamino in Mozart’s Magic Flute, Edmondo in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, Normanno in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor as well as, on leaving the ensemble, Ramiro in Rossini’s Cenerentola.
Martin Mitterrutzner was member of Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck before joining the ensemble of Frankfurt Opera in the 2011/2012 season where he could be heard in roles such as Fenton in Falstaff in a stage production by Keith Warner or Don Ottavio in a new production of Don Giovanni staged by Christof Loy. This production will be revived in the 2017/18, again with Martin in the role of Don Ottavio. In 2011 he guested as Tamino in Mozart’s The Magic Flute at Zurich’s Opera House. After his debut as Brighella in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos under Daniel Harding at the Salzburg Festival in 2012, he gave another guest performance in summer 2013, this time as Ferrando in Sven Erich Bechtolf’s new production of Così fan tutte with Christoph Eschenbach on the rostrum. For Decca, Martin Mitterutzner recorded Fulvio in Da Vinci’s Catone in Utica, a recording that has received many awards, including the ECHO Klassik. At the end of 2016, Martin made his debut at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien in a new production of Don Giovanni (Cond: Ivor Bolton, Dir: Warner/Moxham). Since 2014, Martin Mitterrutzner has been a regular guest at Dresden’s Semperoper. In addition to the roles of Ferrando and Tamino, he will also make a guest performance as Belmonte in Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio in 2016 (Cond: Christopher Moulds, Dir: Michiel Dijkema), and he was on tour with the Insula Orchestra under Laurence Equilbey in La Fura dels Baus’ staged version of Haydn’s The Creation, visiting such cities as Paris, Vienna and Ludwigsburg.
In the coming season, Martin Mitterrutzner will amongst others return to Semperoper Dresden where he can be heard as Tamino in The Magic Flute. He will also sing an in concert performance of The Magic Flute at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. Furthermore, he will star in La Calisto at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and again as Don Ottavio alongside Christian Gerhaher in a concert production of Mozart´s Don Giovanni at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Other highlights of the season include concerts at the Tonhalle Zurich, the Wigmore Hall in London, the Philharmonie in Cologne and the Philharmonie in Paris.
The current focal point of his singing is definitely in the operatic field; however, Martin Mitterrutzner also possesses a wide musical repertoire, stretching from works by Bach and Handel to Benjamin Britten and contemporary composers such as Sven David Sandström. He was a guest performer at concerts by the Munich Radio Orchestra under Jun Märkl, the Internationale Bachakademie with Helmuth Rilling, the MDR Choir under Howard Arman, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Choir and Symphony Orchestra, the Hessische Staatsorchester under Marc Piollet and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Kent Nagano as well as the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst.
Also as a Lied singer the young tenor already managed to achieve an excellent reputation and has performed recitals together with pianist Gerold Huber at the Oper Frankfurt, Philharmonie Cologne, Heidelberger Frühling and Schubertiade Schwarzenberg."; Münchner Philharmonie
