with German Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Christoph Poppen
Aria 'Words forbidden' (Lips are silent) from the operetta 'The Merry Widow' by Franz Lehár
(with pictures from Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and the biennual Federal horticulture show in Germany BUGA at Koblenz/Coblenz/Coblence)
Lippen schweigen, 's flüstern Geigen: "Hab mich lieb."
All die Schritte sagen: "Bitte, hab mich lieb!"
"Sei mein, sei mein!"
Und der Mund, er spricht kein Wort,
doch tönt es fort und immer fort:
"Ich hab dich ja so lieb. Ich hab dich lieb!"
(Instrumental)
Jeder Druck der Hände deutlich mir's beschrieb
Er sagt: "Klar, 's ist wahr, 's ist wahr,
Du hast mich lieb!"
Translation: Lips are silent
Lips are silent, violins whisper: "will you like me."
all steps says: "please, like me!"
Every handshaking tells me clear
It says: "Yes, it's true, it's true. You like me."
While every waltzstep the soul is dancing too.
The little heart hops, knocks and beats :
"Be mine, be mine!"
And the mouth it doesn't talk any word,
but always and always it sounds:
"I like you so much. I like you!"
Every handshaking tells me clear
It says: "Yes, it's true, it's true.
You like me."
I like the way the older couple are waltzing under their umbrella... romantic :-)
MultiSweetviolet Me too, I think there should be more of this, people seem to be embarrassed to show public displays of affection.
Hanna-Elizabeth,
I have become an absolute fan of your since first seeing this concert! I've collected every recording I could find and am hoping to see you perform in person someday! Unfortunately, I live in Oregon in the USA, and you're not very likely to visit this area anytime soon. But I still think you're a VERY SPECIAL person.
PS. I am somewhat of an opera and oratorio "expert." I developed a class called "Opera for People Who HATE Opera!" and have taught it several times. I'm also a singer myself and will be doing the Lippen Sweigen duet with my wife in a performance coming up in a month or so.

Credit also to the violinist in the opening introduction - very elegantly played.
True
Hanna-Elisabeth ist so unglaublich wundervoll
Hanna- Elisabeth, I just love the way that you and Martin blend your voices and your interactions with each other. I think I've watched and listened to this entire concert several times. I
A real crowd pleaser. They both look and sound great. Very lyric.
Their voices, that are very, very beautiful, blend wonderfully.
Truly delightful.
Thank you for posting it.
More of them please!
Zum Ausklang des Tages,
Hanna-Elisabth Müller & Martin Mitterrutzner -
Lippen schweigen, aus Die lustige Witwe, von Franz Lehár,
mit der Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, unt. Lt. v. Christoph Poppen.
Viel Spass!
Super! Habe erst jetzt entdeckt!
This version is the best, because German ist their mother tongue. Their pronunciation gives a feeling of reality.
And the Hungarian version is the best PLUS, because Ferenc (Franz) Lehár was Hungarian.
@@atticusfortezza I am pretty sure that Lehar wrote it in German not Hungarian.
I hope these two wonderful voices will fill the great opera houses of the world in the future.
Wunderschön! Herrliche Stimmen!
Beautiful couple, I love this waltz by them, is so romantic,
Een
Great match, wonderful voices, romantic presentation and beautiful melody !

Except for the weather everything was amazingly beautiful... the music, the direction, the particular beauty (not only in voice) of both singers. Thanks for posting this and share it with us!

I've come back to this clip repeatedly over the last several years.
The Merry Widow, once the most popular operetta of all time, is a delightful, entrancing piece of continental froth.
It is one of the most difficult pieces to carry off. It requires a sense of comedic flair and drama in tandem. It's a style of playing that's become practically extinct. Ernst Lubitsch, who directed the 1934 movie with MacDonald and Chevalier, got these elements just right; it is a spicy, saucy romp.
The problem, too, is that the show is often cast with the two leads in slightly superannuated state, in their late summer or early autumn of their careers. And usually, they often can't help but overcompensate in the attempt at youthful exuberance, with the result being arch and coy. To the point of being cringy and painful.
This clip featuring these two young singers restores the rightful elements rather perfectly. They have the springtime bloom of youth rather than being the last roses of summer. Too, they are gorgeous couple.
Moreover, because they are young, the voices are fresh and healthy. And they use their voices with a great deal of sensitivity and musicality. It is seductive, alluring, and deeply, sweetly moving.
The impact of the fusion of all the right factors is positively a revelation.
To add to this touching occasion, the camera captures an elderly couple dancing and swaying with utter joy. It is obvious they are still in love.
One of the most captivating moments I've ever seen.
wonderful voice, sensitive interpretation. Talent! Promise!
gut gesungen!
I was fortunate to sing chorus - and some dancing, too -in two productions of The Merry Widow" with two different regional opera companies - one in Maryland, the other in Washington, DC - within a year of each other in the late '80s. Both sopranos sang and acted the part of Hanna - the widow - quite well, but I would have loved to have done it with this Hanna, that is Hanna - Elisabeth. I imagine she has played the role of the widow on stage, perhaps several times
Muy Hermoso!!!
Meine Lieblingsoperette und meine Lieblingssänger!!!
The tenor is really good!
Bravissimi, musica e canto paradisiaci
Breath taking!!!
Beautiful. I would love to see more of him.
Dzięki za taką pieśń i wspaniale wykonanie thank You danke merci spasiba djakuju Ryszard Kulesza
Just beautiful, a love this duet.
Precioso , pareja perfecta
I always thought the most tenors are short and not very good looking except Jan Kiepura.
Gracias
I think it was a lovely performance. Sometimes the greatest voice doesn't help. For example, Pavarotti's pronunciation in everything else but Italian was just awful which is very distracting when you know the language and listen to the words. I wouldn't have paid one penny to go and hear Pavarotti butcher "Lippen schweigen", although his voice was great.
Deutsche Kultur !
Nice couple, nice singing.
I agree 100% with C Coco! Definitely! "Anders Bernhard Faksvåg Anders Bernhard"
They were great, very great ! But I don't think this is the best version. The fact german is their mother tongue has nothing to do with the whole concept of music.
What do you mean? The "r" pronunciation? If that's the question is because of metrics and for not being out of tune (if you sing a gutural "r" for exemple, you may sound flat).
Gracias!!!!!
ach wie süss, die zwei
A joy to see and hear!
This version of Lippen Schweigen" is fantastic. Maybe they're not quite as polished in opera as Domingo and Netrebko but have a better grasp of German language and they're definitely on the up lift.
hermoso
Aivan suurenmoinen esitys! -eikö? Ovatko he Sibelius-Akatemian oppilaita!? Danke Schön!
Simply wonderful. My best ❤
I do not speak German, but much of the words I can figure out, besides listening to their duo is my pleasure. thank you for this site.
Your opinion is right, but Renee Flemming sings this at her best, cause she knows german language.
She has great eyes. I'm suddenly overcome with lust.
Very cute woman, but what's she going to be like if she reaches 90?
She has you love her.
A classic beauty, of course!
Roy, she will be a force to be reckoned with!
beautiful lady with a beautiful voice
The singer Hanna sings Hanna Glavari (sp), the Merry Widow. Brava!
It's such a pity you are not singing with him anymore! You are such a perfect duo!
Einfach Klasse!!!Gruß Johann Kohler
they are the nelson eddy and Jeanette McDonald of Germany!!
hanna,,,well done,,and the tenor great voice man....love your singing.love it
Lehar must be one of the greatest composers of the 20th century
Well said. Netrebko is waaaay overrated.
Martin Mitterrutzner is so friggin handsome
So lovely and beautiful!!!
Renee Flemming knows some German and can get by with it, but to say she "speaks" the language would be quite an overstatement.
They look as awsome as they sing.
junge wundervolle Sänger...sehr nett
Good!
Heavenly beautiful. Listen also to Valentina Nafornita and Olga Peretyatko singing the same.
Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Florence
