  • Back in action in the Southern territory to catch an old time favourite. SR unrebuilt pacific 34067 Tangmere returns to its home line running two Cathedral Express runs on two seperate days, on the 15th and 17th of December.
Starting on the 15th at Basingstoke, we see a unique Class 73 electro-diesel No. 73107 'Spitfire' on a test run with five MK I coaches from Woking to Eastleigh. This was my first glimpse of a Class 73 in action. With Tangmere now on the West of England Main Line, she is seen pulling away from Basingstoke on its route to Salisbury.
Two days later Tangmere runs another Cathedrals Express service, this time to Yeovil Junction. At Andover as the pacific approaches the Class 73 is back again, with a Network Rail test train with Class 31 31459 'Cerberus' at the rear. As the due pass, Tangmere swiftly passes Andover to be watered at Salisbury. After being watered 34067 enters the single track section of the network, we see her next making up her awesome power up the 1 in 100 climbe from Gillingham at Buckhorn Weston.
After arriving at Yeovil Junction, the loco gets turned and serviced at the Yeovil Railway Centre while the sun glints on the engine.
After nightfall Tangmere now on the return working can be heard going up the summit at Milborne Port. As it was too dark to film I decided to do a soundtrack of the loco powering its way up the bank.
