- Why were Mon Calamari cruisers so good? Without them, the Rebels wouldn't have had a chance at the Battle of Endor, much less the Galactic Civil War against the Empire -- I'll break it down in today's Star Wars Lore Short!

The ships are literal buildings on Mon Cala . While Ackbar said they can't go toe to toe with ISDs, the tactics employed by himself meant they could combat them effectively.
Apart from Thrawn and Veers the Empire never really used special tactics, so the ISDs became hulking targets

Considering they were built as multipurpose underwater habitats, it's no surprise the hull integrity would be so strong.

Yeah all mon Calamari ships where once underwater buildings that got heavily modified to become capital ships….in fact I’m pretty sure 99% of all the structures in there cities are made up of nothing but ships incase of a planet wide evacuation
@@jj_gaming2589 That’s really interesting because it makes them drastically easier to make in complete secrecy. Of course they all have guns it’s the new primary cities security base that’s why all it’s people look like soldiers. Of course it’s heavily modified for flight and evacuation in case something happens to where it has to be re located in a planetary emergency situation. You could make literally every excuse in the book and it would make complete sense and you could build all the Mon Calamari battle cruisers you want on even imperial controlled worlds or imperial and alliance neutral worlds that are water based and completely outfit it somewhere else with guns in any shipyard or planet that are alliance based.
How to test hull strength? Drown them in deep underwater pressure :))
In Star Wars: Empire at War Mon-Calamari ship also have internal shield generator, which means unlike the Imperial Star Destroyer, shield of Mon-Calamari cannot be destroyed
infortunately they get completely invalidated unless you bring along a couple corvettes.

They had overlapping shields, if one went down, the others would take fire till it went back up.

Mon calamari capital ships were built under water. Their hulls were built to withstand extra pressure. Which gave them extra durability
Tbh this is also why some other vessels were so tough as well despite not being designed for combat
You need enough hull strength to not just break apart under various pressures and such

If I’m going to be a pedantic asshole (which I am), the mon cal cruiser “attachments” (for lack of a better word) actually resemble the attachment system of the XM8, which is very different from pic rails.

The Dauntless Class Cruiser were Luxury Vessels that were modified into combat vessels
Those also being a very massive pain to take out like Mon Calamari ships
The mon Cala Cruisers were basically the Star Wars analogous equivalent of a modern carrier group
The original origin was they were built as luxury cruiseliners, which explains their size and smooth nonmilitaristic lines. They rebuilt enough to defend their planet and send others to aid in rebel fleet actions. The weird disney canon got rid of this sensible story and says they’re basically skyscrapers with engines sitting out in space with no ports or repair facilities.
The Mon Calamari seems to be brilliant spaceship engineers, the Empire really made a mistake by making an enemy of them.

That’s exactly the case, except with more and better guns. And the fighters it brings with them are more than easy to be interchangeable with for each mission and with little to no effort so with that being said they can bring exactly what they need to bring to the table and not cost a fortune and be able to follow up with its specific needs at almost every battle individually. That is what will make or breaks the battle or a surprise ambush if they don’t have the proper abilities or proper support from their Allie’s

also the hulls were naturally strong because they were built underwater, so to withstand pressure they used rather thick layers of metal which gives a solid defence against the majority of low level hits/collisions
Yes. Also, the pressure underwater is quite different from the pressure in open space. These cruisers were made and used underwater before taking to the sky.

Where ISD 2s had the octuple turrets the Mon Cals still only had single of dual cannons spread across the hull instead of concentrated. Yes their sheilds are powerful however the biggest advantage they had is that their shield generators were inside the ships instead of outside where they are vulnerable.
The winged MC-80 has to be one of my favorite ships in all sci fi. I love them so much
Fun Trivia Fact: Those "Blisters" were actually life boats from WWII battleship models added when the models were being built because when you take that shape out of context it becomes unrecognizable.
Imperial commanders have actually respected Mon Cal ships because they could pull their weight in a fight against ISDs
Plus alot of the ships used to be underwater buildings made to withstand deep sea pressure, so their hull by itself was very strong.
Also, they are an aquatic species. They evolved in a world and environment that isn't too different from space. So maybe there tek is just better suited to those type of environments

Carrier vs Battleship. Sure the star destroyer has tie fighter wings but like he said the mon cala had better fighters in its bays. Could take a hit and draw fire long enough for the bombers and fighters to cripple the opposing ship then bug out. If you were gonna fight the empire this is probably how you’d want to do it.
It probably also helps that the Empire treat their fighter pilots as expendable.

Put it this way. A space ship only needs to handle a pressure difference of 1 bar (surface atmospheric pressure). That can be done relatively easily. A US Navy submarine may have to deal with pressures between 10-25 bar for an average dive, or far in excess of 100 bar for a Mon Cala cruiser (depending on how deep their oceans are). Submarines are far sturdier than space ships.

This reminds me of a game that I played. It had a ship called the armogedon it was very survivable but no guns but used 500 of the weakest ship in the game for power. So if you sent 5 of these you had an army of2505 ships

The Mon cal’s shields were usually a class above the imperials
They had less armor, and less reserve systems, but that also meant they could focus their output sooner into the battle
The Mon-Cal ships tended to be just very tough nuts to crack
Which is why the ISD 2 and the other imperial improvements, focused a lot on Ion cannons and better armor
On top of the redundant shielding, Mon Calas had some of the strongest hull structures of any starship in the galaxy. Most starships were constructed for dedicated operations in deep space, whereas most mon calamari ships were retrofitted from buildings that were thousands of meters below water. While an imperial star destroyer turbo laser battery can punch through most material due to the superheated nature of a plasma bolt, even it would have a hard time punching through the hull of a ship that was designed to handle the hundreds of thousands metric tons of atmospheric pressure caused from a planetary ocean. Even if the shields were somehow completely down it would take a while for the ship to sustain massive internal damage. Mon calamari crafts aren't just starships, they're flying fortresses.
They were still heavily armed! If you think back to the ending cutscene of Jedi Academy when 3 New Republic MC80 Cruisers surround 1 ISD, they cut through it like butter!
They also appear to have better ability for fight on a 3rd Dimensional plane compared to Star Destroyers. You can imagine thats very important for space combat lol
Mon Cala ships were pretty well armed, and on paper was not that far behind an ISD. What skyrocketed the ISD ahead was that it could concentrate nearly all its firepower on a target. The MC ships couldn’t do that as the weapons were scattered around the ship. If you have 50 turbo lasers, but can only fire 10 at the target you’re gonna be outgunned by a ship that can fire all 50 at you.
You would think Calamari were toast and even when grilled to provide intel, they fry their best to stay cool.
They maneuver to dip when needed.
Calamari can taste victory.
So how do you requisition the Starbucks or Tim Hortons blister? After all, got to keep your crew awake during combat!
Don't forget the H wings the rebels answer to needing a heavy bomber like the tie punisher

Mon Cal ships weren't ships. They were BUILDINGS. They were designed as deep sea structures. Then launched via repulsorlift into orbit where armor and modular sustems were added. The MC 80 and 90 were the first purpose built warships.

There is also the fact that they were forged in the depths of the ocean leading to thicker armor plating to protect against the crushing pressure
couple things you're yet to g wrong here, the whole "repurposed civilian ships" was just a front to excuse their construction to the empire, from the outset they were intended as ships of war, another thing while the Mon cal cruisers didn't have the same compliment of guns as a star destroyer they could still absolutely match it for firepower and not just because of the starfighter compliment

I'd probably go with the ST Picard Era Inquiry Combat Cruiser.....Spam everyone of these primitive Invaders with Class 6 Photon torpedoes, and adv. Quantum Torpedoes...Phaser volleys, and a blast from the main Afterburner Phaser...(pink 🩷 beam of destruction.)

A fun fact about mon calamari ship building it was supposed to be natural and flowing like designed and no mon cal cruiser was the same as another each one had diferent features and design than the rest no matter how small

The thing that always got me was the rebel strike craft. In most games we played they said rebels stole the xwings. But i dont get how the xwings "prototype" could be stolen and incom and or the empire was just like "oh no! How did we make that again?". Maybe I buy the efficiency of tie fighter being the reason...but when rogue squadron can come into a battle alone and win I think it's time to upgrade.
But the Empire's naval doctrine was all about capital ships. Unlike the X-wing the TIE fighters were only ever going to be used against enemy fighters in large, decisive battles amd only deployed feom ISD's and other capital ships. Whereas the X-wing could jump into Hyperspace with the Rebel Fleet and hit the battlefield running before the TIE's could be scrambled

With the complexity of their navy, a Elite Dangerous in the Star Wars universe sounds very possible.
An other important thing IS that all mon cal ship are UNIQUE. Meaning that you Can Never know where to shoot to disable it quickly. Well all you know IS the props location. All the bridge, shield geberators and all aren't at thé same place. Unlike the standardise impérial ones (sorry for errors, hard to write in english with a différent language auto corrector

Yeah… then somehow in Rian Johnsons world those ships became vulnerable to ‘fleet killer’ destroyers and their small top of the line ships became glacial bombers that couldnt outpace a fart drifting across space.

I played old starwars games... Rebbelion.... Pc games year 95.. the best for me until now.. u can build a squadron of friggate or a few armada... Train jedi or sith.. concuer a few galaxy .. gain economy... Build mon calamari or death star... All in a few hundred planet ... My setup... Build a base in every galaxy.. a few squadron of frigate to hunt empire lone starship...
Mon Cal ships and Clan Omnimechs from Battletech are similar.
How quickly could these ships repair or replace critical parts? Or manufacture these parts? Redesign them?
