As someone who was fortunate enough to get early time with the 1040 prototype, it is worth more than they ask retail for. In my almost 14 years recording experience I can say that the diversity you can get with the control panel will make up for the price easily. It replaced 4 mics in my studio (total cost a bit more over 5000 dollar) and I am planning to get more for a stereo pair. It is always worth getting 1 excelent FET or Tube mic for any studio (normally a Neumann, old Telefunken or these days SE Electronics RTN), so if you treat the 1040 in this category, its quite competitively priced imho.

I had a chance to work with that Lewitt mic about two weeks ago. The studio we were at called Seeflection Studios has a lot of different mic's. I believe they said they have about 150 when we were going through the tour before choosing them. We listened to the Neumann 149 and that 1040. For violin and vocals there really was no comparison. Very different microphones. The violin had much more life and was amazingly clear sounding with its tone on that Neumann. The vocals sounded more "open" and like unmuffled especially when Teresa pushed hard. We did blind ABC, ABCDE, etc for each person and instrument and we never wound up choosing the 1040. Probably because their studio had a lot of amazing mic's. I can certainly see great uses for the 1040. Especially if the studio has a somewhat more limited budget than the one we chose.

@Joe also in regards to the China comment, I've had one for 10 years and it's never had an issue. The build quality is so high, when their microphones were recommended to me by a studio in my college days, I didn't even think they were made in China. It's a "hand made" (in China) product, according to the paperwork that came with mine... 😁😁😁

I wonder if they'll make a new version of that old pop filter that fits their current microphones, but has more distance (or just another layer farther out like this new one has).

Oh dude, if changing the brand of tube makes no difference in a guitar amp it also makes no difference in a mic. Tubes do not have a sound (which is why in the entire history of vacuum tubes no manufacturers have ever produced frequency response curves for them - because they do not have a sound). The circuit they are in has a sound and the tubes will have variations in gain/volume from brand to brand (and maybe even from tube to tube) which some people will interpret as a small change in sound. But a tube does not know if it's in a microphone or guitar amp, it just does a thing. But you know this because you have done the science already.

Any change to the source sound is an effect or filter, in theory there shouldn't be better sounding mics than others, they should be judge on how faithful they are to the source they are capturing.

"Drum sample replacement is lame" and "I always reamp guitar tracks that were recorded direct" is a weird hill to die on. I get the distinction, but the only real difference is that you spent a lot of money on amps. I guess it matters more if you only ever record Canadian metal.

    • @CyberChrist

Your analogy would be right if all notes were replaced with other notes from another guitar, played by another guitarist on another amp, recorded with another mic in another studio. No points for originality.

Love your videos. But totally do NOT agree. We just sent back the 1040. Really good mic. But NOT at all up to our high end microphones. If you are comparing it to a great dual capsule tube like that, either you are not hearing like you used to or you have a mic than needs some work. The L1040 is a very nice, very flexible mic. It is NOT comparable to a great tube dual capsule like the 149 from Lewitt. Period. Seriously guy, either get your mic checked if you have an M149, or get your hearing checked. It is like completely beyond obvious!!!

I'm somebody who almost always prefers a vintage look and feel (not to mention sound) when it comes to gear. But I've gotta say, there's nothing about this design I don't love. Carbon fiber body, innovative mic cradle design, magnetic pop-stopper mount. And the detachable remote? You gotta be kidding me! I also REALLY like the tube window. That's a nice touch for the vibe's sake. Nothing like the nice warm glow of a vacuum tube to get you in the right headspace. Great video, Glenn!

GLEEEEEEN, GLEN, GLEN, GLEN, GLEN. Something that occurs to me as I've watched your vids and comments on speakers, etc.: Has anyone ever done tests on speaker placement within the cab? Eg. physical separation. Two speakers mounted toward the back of the cab and two in a normal position in the front, perhaps.
Nice mic, too. Expensive as hell, so it's a hard pass for me, but it would be a hell of a mic to have.

For a mic I've never heard of it sound pretty good. I can easily get the sound I'm looking for right away from my bugera 4x12 cab and I cant complain about the fact that it was basically free. I think this would only be good in the home studio or especially in the budget studio business. A real studio would want something that sounds more unique and well... better.
All those very cool analog components create impeadance loading on the circuit that makes it a little dull to me. I'd rather just have the one magic mic for each instrument (2-3 HQ mics? and a bunch of lower mid tier mics for the band).

I was the same way up to the price. To be fair, it's a shit ton of bang for the buck. For instance, it's barely more than an 87. But it gives you so much more than an 87. Even though, it's still too high for most people. Only production studios that actually book time and make money will be buying this. That is me, but I still won't be spending $3500 on a new mic and time soon. And the center of my studio is already a restored Tele251. I had to bring it back from the dead (looked like it was literally ran over by a car). But it's put an end to spending thousands on microphones. This looks good though, maybe on the used market in a couple years.

    • @youngroyalty7991
      @youngroyalty7991 2 роки тому +1

Not glenn, but really any lavalier mic should do, although I’d recommend a dynamic mic as well, something like a good ol’ SM58 for its damn near indestructibility and ease of use. It’s also got a very short range for what sound it picks up, so rest assured it won’t catch too much noise. Lav mics can be a touch delicate with clipping and boomy as they’re right on your chest where a lot of the voice resonates, so that’s why I’m suggesting a standard dynamic mic.
      Anyways, happy recording :)

How do I improve the mix for listening on the cellphones? I know that music should be listened in stereo but every time people are lazier and only use the speaker of their phone.
Personally I try to mix in mono and then switch to stereo, since most cellphones are mono so I try to get the best result in both systems.
But is there a better method for this?
Because sometimes I listen to famous songs that sound good in both systems and then I listen to my mixes and I miss instruments or others stand out a lot.
