Glenn, have you tried Dubs earplugs? If so, how do the Eargasms compare sound-wise? I've been happy with the Dubs except for the ear rubbers, Eargasms look like they won't leave the rubber in my ear holes.

When it comes to cheap versus expensive, it really comes down to how it makes you feel. I paid the price for an Ibanez S Prestige, and I wanted one ever since high school 20 years ago, then I received it and was immediately disappointed because the overall feel was just weird to me. I went back to my $179 Yamaha RGX420S and it’s a phenomenal guitar.
As I’ve said before, I’ve owned three Gibsons and two of them DID have issues on the lower end of the price scale, but they weren’t hopeless. The 50s Les Paul I have is a lot nicer and I’ve been very happy with it. Play on what you like because you’ll never be satisfied compromising what’s important to you.

Gleeeeeeeen! Got some confessions to make:
    1. I finished recording my first album with my band in a home-made studio right before you put out a video about home-recording tips (and found out that we did a bunch of stuff wrong and had to make compromises in mixing)
    2. You put out your "band photo shooting tips" video a mere week after we already took our band photos... WRONG (I personally look like some angry idiot in each and every one of them)
There were some other examples as well but enough about that...
I really like your videos! They are very informational and give a fresh perspective to a bunch of stuff. I am just sad that some of them came out a touch too late to be useful for my first album so I had to learn from mistakes, but I'll definitely use a bunch of this information when recording the second album soon... Keep up the good work! You've really helped me a lot!

An older metal head asked me to teach him how to use modern equipment for live music and recording. His back story: Bass player, owns $20k worth of gibsons for an investment, tone is in the hands, tone is in the guitars tonewood, and refused to watch a single video of youtube content. I believe he said something along the lines of "you'll never find true info on youtube". It just blows me away how many people refuse to even watch a video just because of the platform it is on. Hi Glenn, love your channel.
Regarding the "drum sample replacement/re-amping" comment i think there could be confusion/distinction between :) 1 Replacing drum hits with triggered individual drum samples and :) 2 Using sample loops to create a drum track or replace a recorded one. In the context of your reply the individual drum triggers keeps the original drummers performance as does reamping from a recorded DI guitar. Maybe a short video showing the difference may help some viewers.
Thanks again & Rock On !!

Being a user of the Relay G10, I have never had an issue. Back in 2020, Line 6 announced a recall to repair, and all you had to do was update the firmware. When the recall was first announced, there were a grand total of FOUR incidents in the last 4 years (bare in mind, thousands, if not millions of these were sold). I ended up updating the firmware and have not had any issues since. For those interested, the Line 6 has released a "Mark II" version that does not need to updated.
P.S. The Relay wireless systems have a DI output, so, if you are like me and like to use pedals, and you can have two channels recording, one is a clean DI signal, and the other is your signal through you pedals and amp!

GLENNN!! I want to add to the Harley Benton convo here. I bought the Joyo Jackman with the 2X12 Vertical Cab. They gave me the option to even place where the speakers go which is great. Sure, customs and stuff was a little annoying with me living in California, but I’d say the HB cabs are some of the best a broke college student like me can get. It works great to practice and play on, as well as gigging for

    Re: sample replacement vs reamping.
It's the recently revitalized idea of the Ship of Theseus.
Sample replacement and quantization replaces all the pieces of the ship with new parts.
Meanwhile reamping guitars is more like a new coat of pitch for the deck. The ship's still there, and the new pitch won't change that.

In regards to expensive vs cheap gear reviews, you likely have some in the community who subscribed for the high end equipment they can’t afford/their parents will buy for them. The cheap gear reviews appeal to the basement producers who are trying to get the most bang for the buck. I love em both, seeing how good stuff is that I can never afford is fun. And seeing potential future purchases with a great value is great too though!

My band has been going direct for years now. My other guitarist and I both use Helixes, and our bassist uses a Darkglass B7k. We've never had an issue with local sound guys, luckily. However, we always check out the sound situation, and if it is a small bar or somewhere without a better setup, we have powered speakers we can bring to augment their system. We've had to do this only once.

So when you brought up the REVV and ENGL for the cab I think those are great options hands down. I would also recommend Something from Orange if you're looking to save money for something bigger. Those can easily squeeze the most out of your sound on a budget. They have some cheaper models like the Terror and Micro lines. Also the Herbert 2 channel Preamp overdrive pedals are a really good option for someone looking to save up as well. Now granted it's no Kraken and so on. However for under
    $400cad so about 299usd it's great.

Regarding the keeping people happy dilemma, you never will. I personally love my Gibsons Fenders and expensive recording equipment, but also swear by my cheap ART Pro Channel and Indonesian Jackson when time calls for it. A tool is a tool. Some people here love seeing affordable gear, some people love seeing expensive gear. So one way or the other someone will be disappointed. Just a symptom of the internet. So I wouldn't worry about it, keep doing what you're doing.

Tbh as someone who has followed the channel for 8 years, I prefer the content focused on the more afforadble or cheap gear that works really well (or works like crap if thats the case) over the expensive gear. I do everything from home and pay for it with either the projects that I get or with whatever small income I make off my day job. Expensive gear isn't even near the list of importance for me, and to be honest I prefer not even looking at it because I don't want gear Envy. I prefer the content focussed on stuff that is actually going to help me and actually seems viable and acquirable over items that are worth more than all my bills and expenses combined

I agree with the idea of using the Kemper, Fractals etc. I use a HeadRush myself, and I know several tour guys use them as well.
It is easier to use, reduces the stage noise floor if you are using IEMs... and if you use them with a monitor wedge, it is still better than a roaring stack.... and certainly less heavy.
And reliability is the biggest piece. Having a back up s relatively easy, especially where I can load the SAME rigs and SAME IRs into the back up and swap them out an get the same exact tone every time.

Great comments all around, as per usual😁. I have been learn how to use GarageBand for our band to do some scratch demos of original songs as well as trying (and failing miserably) to get my real estate business to attract clients via UA-cam videos. I have been using Davinci resolve for that (awesome free program), and while maybe the content (me) is lacking, the knowledge of those two programs makes it easy to sync the sound etc. Self taught is great…🤨…but having the tools available (free) makes spending time learning worth it. I guess, bottom line if you know audio production, learn video production too…and watch Gllllllleeeeeeeeeennnnnnn….he is a pretty good instructor😎

14:31 Shipping and brokerage fees will vary from carrier to carrier and as Glenn pointed out, depending on the service used, but you will always have to pay your country's taxes and the imported goods' duty no matter what. In Canada, guitars (electric and acoustic) have a 6% duty fee.

    Hi Glenn,
I was wondering what your two cents are for an issue I'm having. I'm a guitarist that plays with many different groups, including a few wedding bands, so modelers have been a great choice. The unit sounds great on its own and when I'm the only guitar player. However, my tones just don't sit well in the room when I'm playing alongside another guitarist with a tube amp. I'm either constantly too loud, or my sound is just swept under the rug, and the line between those two points is paper thin. Other guitarist has a Blackstar head into an Orange verticle 2x12.
I'm doing all the amp, cab, and effects stuff in the Moore GE300, and then running that output into the effects return of an old 100 watt solid state amp so as to bypass it's preamp. We've tried sending the signal through the effects return of a tube amp as well, but it's the same story. I've experimented with different cab IR's, turning them on and off, trying compressors, expanders, EQ, etc and nothing seems to alleviate the issue. Clearly touring musicians don't seem to have this issue, otherwise they wouldn't use modelers. Any advice? Hopefully I provided enough info.

I've ordered twice from Thomann for Harley Benton guitars. Always chose the faster shipping method for speed. The slow rate took 5 weeks. The $30CAD more expensive shipping took 5 days. And, yes, you pay import and taxes BEFORE you receive the goods. The guitars were all worth it!

Hey Glenn, been watching for years but I don't think I've ever commented. Just wanted to add to the conversation since it seems to still be resisting death at the moment: A few years ago I still owned 5 Gibson's ranging from the early 80's to the mid 2000's. I always thought they were just the best thing you could buy. Then, I decided to look more into mid-range priced guitars (mostly by Jackson, LTD, Ibanez) usually preferring the Indonesian & Korean made stuff. I started to notice the quality of those guitars from the $400-$800 price range were actually quite better in comparison to the Gibson guitars costing twice as much or more. I've since sold all of my Gibson's and am far more content with the gear I own. They feel more solid, they sound as good (if not generally better), and they STAY THE FUCK IN TUNE! Considering the mid-level guitars are still armed with things like locking tuners, quality woods, and Seymour pickups, there's just no justification to pay Gibson prices. I'm not knocking the folks who are die-hard believers of any brand but, as you've stated many times, the name on the headstock DOESN'T MEAN SHIT. It's all in what you can do with it (meaning you actually have to practice). Cheers, and thanks dude \,,/

Get the SC Custom Plus with the Floyd rose from HB. It's so amazing. Also the SC Gotoh Deluxe. Perhaps the Fusion III (there are variants). And don't forget the Amarok if you want extended range baritone metal axes that are quite decent and well priced. Or the Aeolus which has pretty decent specs. Lots to like.

But when I get home to listen to what was recorded on my H6 the signal would keep dropping out for 1 second. So in the recording you're getting this constant soft "pop pop pop pop". I have 2 little desktop mic stands and a posilock side boom extension that I clip onto it, and I have the positioning with both of them down to a science so I get them in the same spots on the dust cap/cone boundary on my favorite speaker in my Seismic Audio 4x12 cab (bottom left). I quad track with a Joyo Meteor II using the In Flames HM-2 trick, with the left channel's main take boosted with a metal-zone with the volume dimed, sweep at 10 o'clock and the mids and highs at 2 o'clock, lows at 10 o'clock, and the gain on one, and the right channel boosted by a precision drive. I've used that for my hardcore band, and the tone is disgusting.

If you don't want to cripple your battery time DO NOT UPGRADE the firmware. (see my other comment above!)
Check out some line6 forum threads about this, everyone is complaining about this since then.
      There is no downgrade!
.... IF you decide not to upgrade, then make sure that whenever you are charging it, keep away from any flammable stuff, also do not charge it unattended or when you are sleeping. It can explode only when it is charging.
If you decide to upgrade it for safety, which I can understand, then prepare an extra cable for your next show or a spare wireless system.

@@lepilepi9027 good information Thanks. I never charge anything unattended and would hate to lose that battery life. I guess I need to see how bad the "explosion" is. Catching fire is one thing... throwing fire is another!

    Hey Glen!
I see you share a lot of tips on guitar speakers to create a unique sound for amps (very informative, thank you).
Could you create something similar for electric bass speakers? As a noob bass player I obviously love the sound of Darkglass amps, but I'd also like to customise/experiment with different sounds/combinations, and honestly I'd rather spend on things that really change the sound, like amps and pickups.
    Cheers from Italy, dude!

As far as reviewing high end gear vs affordable gear goes, I would say we all could use quite a bit of both. We're all different people and we all have different wants and needs in the studio. Some expensive pieces are gear are worth their weight in gold. And there's lots of amazing affordable gear too. Nothing wrong with either one. Some of us are living to check to check and some are financially more stable or well off. No need to review any more or less of either topic. What's important, is that we have these reviews and demos that you provide to help us make an informed decision on a purchase. Expensive or not.

L6 have replaced the G10S with the G10SII that , hopefully, doesn't have the same issue. I use one in my home studio for the convenience of not having a cable trailing around.
I use a L6 G90 setup for live and it's been faultless for years.

Yeah, the Harley Benton 2x12 Vintage is a no brainer especially if you are in Europe where the shipping is cheaper. Its slightly cheaper than just getting the actual V30 speakers separately so you get the cabinet itself for free and its a pretty good cab also made from plywood and with metal handles and corners and its stereo/mono switchable. I have one myself since over 10 years.

Here is a video idea: You, the metal producer, team up with a few producers from other genres (pop, country, electronic, whatever) on UA-cam. Each one gets the same raw tracks: drums & vocals (just the pure microphone stems), bass & guitars (just the DI signal for re-amping), keys (just the MIDI notes) and each one finishes it in their own way. I bet the result would be very interesting for everybody involved.

I just repurchased my old Schecter C7 Hellraiser that I lost 12 years ago when I was still using opiates. Been clean for over 10 years, but I've also been out of the gear game for that same amount of time. What's a great amp for playing in an apartment? Something versatile that gives a great metal tone. Doesn't have to be super cheap.

My G10 was fantastic UNTIL I did the safety update. It didn't overheat, lasted a good 6+ hours on a single charge, and did not drop out within at least a 50ft range. Since the update, it's noisy as hell, I can't get a full set out of it, and it drops out if I WALK IN FRONT OF THE DAMN TRANSMITTER! I did not know about the recall either. Thanks Glenn!

I shamelessly use Drumagog Drum Replacement Software on kick and snare, blended underneath the real performance. I never replace the original drums. In fact, I have 3 channels of kick (2 real & 1 Drumagog kick) blended and 2 channels of snare (1 real & 1 Drumagog) blended. There is no replacement going on. Just reinforcement.
Bonus: That Drumagog snare and even the Drumagog kick (when appropriate) are perfectly clean and isolated for sending through a reverb send.
I record basic tracks in my basement with a small Vox Brian May Recording Amp in the room with the drums (recording its line out signal) and I record a direct clean guitar feed split from a direct box before the Brian May Amp. Then it's post production amp sims and a few other layers/doubling added after that.
The results are deceptively raw sounding, yet full and clear with a very natural drum sound- as if Andy Wallace decided to go raw punk/metal with a few of his studio tricks.
I have a Radial Re-Amp box also, for additional miked re-amped sounds, but I don't always hear a need to take it that far....
My DAW is old Apple Logic Pro 9, btw. Great amp sims in there!

Tuning your guitar is part of playing, tune every time before and after playing, also tuning helps train your ears to what the strings are supposed to sound like.

  • @romratt

Hi glenn,There's something I can't wrap my brain around when it comes to re-amping or isobox recording: What about the interaction between the guitar,strings,pick-ups and the sound coming out of the cab itself.I mean things like controlled feedback like you hear at the end of children of the gave by Black Sabbath or the early slayer solo's. I know everything has to be as tight as possible nowaday's but my rudimentary experience in being recorded and recording and noisy practicerooms part of the guitarsound is also created when the pick-ups pick up some of the sound coming from the amp.I know there is a sweet spot before feedback becomes uncotrollable but when you're in that sweetspot taking away the sound coming from the speakers takes away that sweet spot. And when you're in the sweetspot how does that translate to a DI recording in a daw when you're recording DI track and a micked cab.
That's just a brainfart from my side

I don't remember where, but I once read something about someone (Maybe Slash, but I'm really not sure) recording a direct signal from the guitar while using a small 1x12 amp on a stand in the control room pointing directly at the guitar. The player could move the guitar closer or farther from the amp to control the feedback. I haven't tried this myself but now that I'm thinking about it I might have to dig out my reamp box and give it a go.

I don't use an amp either. I use a preamp pedal with a direct-out going to the mixing board. yep. My pedalboard plugs directly into the mixing board, and that is my entire rig. Best decision ever.
ONE guitar, and a pedalboard in the back seat of your car, that is the best way to travel from gig to gig.

In regards to drum samples, I like to record the samples of the actual talent and keep them raw and then when I go to replace using something like trigger 2, I EQ them and then I can blend in the sample with the actual performance to reduce cymbal bleed another on UN wanted sounds.
