    Dave, Thanks so much, I have just purchased two HK Orange receivers and I put one in a Stryker and removed the AR500 that was in there to use in my Super Sportster EP that I am currently building and this video helped to let me know that I made the right choice in switching them. I have flown the Stryker several flights now with the Orange HK Rx with no problems, but still trust AR500's range a little better for a balsa plane and you confirmed my gut feeling.

    Great job Dave, I was planning on purchasing a few of the orange Rx myself and now with your information I think I will try a few of them myself and you can be assured that I will test then to make sure they will be safe to fly! Thank you for your videos, they are always fun and educational!! 2 THUMBS UP! jb

    hi Dave, great job testing both RX's, thx for this ! I have 3 HK orange RX but recently bought HK orange satellites too. Maidened my PZ P51D a couple of weeks ago (3 Flightmax HK lipo batteries 11.1 V 3s 1300 maH 20C and 2 Rhino 1350 maH 25 C used in 5 succesfull consecutive flights) with orange RX and satellite and it worked perfectly. Range was no problem and could fly as far as I can see and feel comfortable with, yesterday I did another 3 flights and all is fine. So far so good ! lol

    Great video! I wonder if Hobby King is following the trajectory outlined in "The Inventors Dilemma", where companies start out with low-end or lower-quality products, and then move up the food chain. I love those Kraft servos! I hope you keep adding some of this interesting historical context to your videos, it's so interesting to those of us new to the field!

    Basically confirms my own tests and experience with the Orange RX's. Doesn't mean that I won't use them, but I only install them in foamies and I keep them close!

    Thank you for this informational vid, Dave. THe comparison was an eye opener. I thought all Orange RXs were made equal. I use them on my scratch-built foamies and my clone 450 heli; on my scratch-built AP, I use the Spektrum RX. Make more of these vids, Dave. You are definitely doing great with your contributions to the hobby!

    Another great video Dave. I know your pain with the Hobby King and damaged goods that are DOA. I recently bought (3) of the HK Spektrum AR6110 knockoffs. All (3) of them work, but will not hold a bind. HK says I have to pay to send them back. Like you said, not worth the return shipping. I have also noted, they are no longer selling them at this time! Have fun my friend ~ James

    Good video as always and great to finally see someone do a ground range test with these receivers.
    But I'd say the actual flying range should be about 1,5 times the range on the ground or so, right?
    The difference between both transmitters on the other hand is surprising.

    well i appreciate your test results , i noticed the orange recievers were not the full range , where as the spektrum was,. thay do have full range orange rx.s with two ;long grey antennae , and i have had no problems with the full range. yes i did have issues with the orange rx.s with the one little short red antennae thank you , please try your experiment with orange full range , would love to see the results. and fyi, i recently have had issues with my new DX8 FAILING RANGE TEST, horizon hobby stated nothing wrong, crashed two planes , could pace off only about 23-25 paces during range test,. not sure what to think. thank you marty

    When building a EXI 450, I had to remove my Spectrum AR6110 because in declining battery charge the motor would cut out on me. I erplaced it with one of the HK orange rx's and have had no problems since. I give them a thumbs up for being 80% cheaper and having good performance. Of course I can't fly my 450 near as far as an Airplane anyway.

    Unlike the others the numbers arent my main concern, that was answered with the driving test, those I would love to see more of. I have switched my whole fleet over to the orange rx with satilites and now have a box full of unused paperweight spektrum recievers. Very Very good review. But like other mentioned why did you not road test the Speks?

  • @richtrost2676

    Unless I'm mistaken, the Orange Rx you show is clearly marked as a Park receiver, not full range. I've flown 6 of these Orange park receivers in a number of planes at our field, flying as far as my eyesight allows and never had a glitch. Spektrum is also made in China but hopefully with better quality control, components and design. I also flew with Kraft equipment in the (distant) past. Lost one plane when the wire wound elevator stick pot failed (the wiper wore through the wire and it opened up) so they weren't bullet proof. Servos were good, though, but quite large and heavy. I've had reasonable luck with Hobby King products but also got one inoperative servo and a receiver that wouldn't hold it's bind.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  7 років тому

      That is not a park receiver. I had 12 of them before my big fire destroyed everything. They all worked fine. The park Orange receivers are called Orange Lites. I used to work at Kraft RC systems. We used only military grade A pots, so am surprise to hear that. Thanks.

    • @richtrost2676
      @richtrost2676 7 років тому

      The Orange receivers I mentioned say ORANGE Rx, DSM2 and Park Receiver in very small letters. The antennas are short, 1" wires poking out of the case at right angles. What you show in the video may be a different Rx as it's not clear although it looks like the ones I've used. Yes, Kraft was good stuff with good customer service. I mailed Kraft about the wire wound stick pot and they sent a replacement with a carbon element. I assumed I wasn't the only one who had a wire wound pot fail.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  7 років тому

      This WAS full range. In no place does it say it is a Park Receiver. It can be read easily at :23 It was the first of the Orange Receiver line in 2011 and were advertised as full range long before they came out with the second versions of Orange receivers with 2 antennae I would never use a park receiver in any of my planes. Thanks again.

    I do have one question though Why is the orange rx 1056 at 20 ft and only 793 at 15 ft? when the specturm is 1056 at 15 ft? Isn't range "Range" so to speak? or did I miss something? I did watch this video 3 or 4 times LOL any how Great test.

    An excellent test criteria except you didn't test multiple Spektrum receivers.
    At this time we have an equal number of HK and Spektrum receivers in planes flying at our field. I have witnessed planes crashing unexpectedly over the past few months.
    None of them were flying with the HK receivers. I don't know if the receivers were the reason for the crashes. I would like to see the results from more samples from both manufactuers.
    Would you test a sampling of receivers that I sent you?

    Hey Dave, have you heard that the orange rx apparently have a second antenna pad that can be used to attach a longer antenna. @sparky0308 I think reliability should be a better argument than range, especially when even 792 feet is a pretty good distance for most airplanes. I tend to fly 2m span planes not much further away than about 200 meters which is approx. 650 feet.
    Receivers will be more reliable when they have double the range though and Spektrum can't quite deal that well with interference from what I've experienced.

    @Mrinfoone on your receiver when you look at the bind port there should be a positive/negative symbol... Out of the three wires the orange one will need to be on the positive side... Way I remember it is orange always faces the bulkier bit of the receiver... You will not harm your receiver or servos by plugging them inter wrong way... Hope I helped!

    Something strange going on: if you normalize the data by taking the ratio of actual range per foot of Turkey Baster range (i.e. take the actual range stated that was based on the car calibration and divide by the Turkey Baster range test) the Red Tx comes out first with 100 ft actual per foot of Turkey, second is the Orange1 at 80, and then all the rest are 52 to 55. So it is hard to say which combo is more reliable. Using the Turkey Baster. Take away seems to be to "test your installation".

    I have to echo what unplugged wrote. It's not only a matter of polarization of the antennas. Radiation patterns of antennas can be dramatically and significantly changed by the things around it. Just sticking them both in a turkey roaster is not good enough. Were the antennas of both receivers perfectly straight and in the same orientation with regard to the transmitter? Were both receivers in exactly the same position inside the roasting pan? These factors can totally change the pattern.

    I have the dx6i and i used the hobbyking orange rx for a few weeks and had no problems with them. Until........ I lost connection with my skyfun at less than 200 feet. I picked up the plane and the light was blinking on the rx showing a brownout due to low power. I had never had this happen with the exact same setup before. Since then all of the 10 orange rx that i bought would brownout and lose connection. Its interesting that you said your two radios had different ranges.

    How do you normally have your transmitter antenna pointed when flying ? It is not clear from your range testing on the road whether the transmitter is pointing along the road and, if so, whether it is straight out or tilted up. I read somewhere that the range was better if the transmitter antenna was at right angles to the model. Perhaps you could test that using your method.
    Another factor should be how the receiver antennae are in relation to the transmitter so that needs testing too.

    good vid thanks for all the work only way to do it. I have 3 orange r615x with the 2 little aerials not had them long and nowhere on the case or manual does it say 'park flyer' or not full range so you would take it for granted that it was full range but on testing it obviously isn't. l tested one of mine today put the tx in the car butted up against the windscreen switched on and managed to walk exactly 470 paces away before the red flashing lost contact light came on. not exactly 470 yards but would say 400 yards give or take l took pretty long strides. So that's 1200 feet not bad l slope and never really go anywhere near that distance so long ir short range is academic to me these orange rx will serve my purpose. By the way on your video l hear a audible beeping when you drive out of range ? l don't get that and lm using the same gear ..can you tell me why ? mines in DSMX Mode

    To all the commenters, just my two cents...... I have a bunch of orange RX and I have a few that give over 60 paces on the range test, while others barely go 25 paces. All have alt $12.00 plug in receiver. Most of the guys that have spectrum TX at my field use orange RX. Never had a problem with them, but HAVE had a few problems with Specktrum brand RX. I fly some of my 20 and 30 cc gas with orange RX, but I don't fly real far away. To each his own I quests. Always range test your set ups.

    So if I don t have much $, would you recommend buying the orange receiver, or should I save up for a better one?

    sometimes when you expose a circut board like the one inside a transmitter it will stop working or some parts will stop working its happened to me before so maybe that happened to the bad transmitter

    Well my Orange receivers have never given me any trouble(as opposed to original Spectrums)and they are used in planes from 1 to 2,5m wingspan to the point where my old eyes can`t see what`s up or down.On the other hand I`ve had crashes with the original AR61`s where I nearly hit myself.Gotta admit I`m having serious doubts about bying Spectrum-how many satelites are they upto now-is it 4 or 6 on the "ultra royal"? And of course my DX8 spends more time in Germany than at the field with me!

    and your are allowed to have your opinion i am just saying i have over 20+ planes and everyone has a orange receiver in it not one has had a problem i have also had a dx6 that has the well known problem with the on off switch which has caused at least 3 crashes with spectrum telling me that they would do nothing to fix it except send me another one with the same problem....i have no problem with spektrum except there prices and the quality received for those prices....i do enjoy these debates :)

    Because the FCC limits the amount of power output from the Tx, usually the only way manufacturers have to improve range is developing better Tx's. It's too bad those chinchy Exceed Rx's with the satellite receivers aren't DSM2, because I'd like to know how they perform.

    I don't know if you did that, but you should guarantee that all the times the position of the antenna in relation to the other antenna should be the same, if in a test you have both vertically parallel to each other you gone have good range, if in the next test you have one perpendicular to each other you gone have crap range.
    Again it just wasn't clear in the video if you took that in consideration or not, not trying to teach anything.

    Hi, I really like your test and I did have problens with the orange reciever too. What I did and its still cheapper then the original DSM2 reciever is to buy a satellite for the orange receiver, this will cost around $14 at Hobby King, and after that I did not have a problem at all, even fly at the place that I have cracked my planes, because of lost o f signal. That will be great if you can add a satellite and make the same test, you would not be desaponted. Regards, Mauro from Ceara/Brazil.
