Charles-François Gounod’s Faust was once one of the most famous and most performed of all operas: at Covent Garden it was heard every season between 1863 and 1911. Jules Barbier and Michel Carré’s libretto is a tale of romance, temptation, and the age-old battle between satanic powers and religion. It is based on Carré’s play Faust et Marguerite, which in turn is based on Part I of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s dramatic poem Faust, one of the great works of European literature.
David McVicar’s lavish production, first seen in 2004, sets the action in the Paris of Gounod’s later years, on the eve of the Franco-Prussian War. Charles Edwards’s designs include a memorable Cabaret d’Enfer and an impressive reconstruction of the Church of Saint-Séverin. They vividly convey the clash between religion and hedonistic entertainment, and provide a powerful backdrop to Gounod’s score. Faust contains much-loved musical highlights including the memorable Soldiers’ Chorus, Méphistophélès’s rowdy ‘Song of the Golden Calf’, and Marguerite’s Jewel Song with its dazzling coloratura. The opera’s final scene includes an impassioned trio between Faust, Marguerite and Méphistophélès, as Marguerite struggles to resist temptation and gain salvation. - Розваги
Tintin fans 🤝 Fans of the phantom of the opera novel
I'm coming here because I'm reading the book in this moment. ❤️❤️❤️
By the whiskers of Kûrvi-Tasch!
OMG YES ❤
Blistering Barnacles!
Yes
The fact the comment section is filled with Phantom of the Opera references fills me up with joy
Surely the other way round...?
What? Its tintin references.. not phantom of the opera-
@@pedrooliveira3585 Either makes no sense though - both postdate Faust by quite a number of years...
that's why I came here ☕
@@pedrooliveira3585 There's a game created by Mazm studios called "The Phantom of the Opera" and in it, there's a character named Christine who sings this

Sing, my angel of music..
I've been a Tintin fan for over a decade and only now looked this up! What a fun choice since the Castafiore is often dripping in jewels, but her signature aria is one of a humble woman toying with borrowed riches and marveling at them!
Same here but found this many years ago!
That's why i'm here too!
Same
I have been a Tintin fan for 50 years and only now looked this up.
Same!
Behold! She's singing to bring Down the Chandelier!!
*lots of screams, many injured, only one dies tho, the new concierge*
"Do I dare to put on these earrings?"
The earrings: (are already on)
I laughed so hard at this comment. 🤣😂😅
I also noticed that 😂😂
You can actually watch her putting them on hastily, this is not a film where you can cut and edit, it is a live recording, impossible to edit the images, even if they switch from one cam to another.
And then Erik knocks down the chandelier.
Rainbow Star Productions (singing)The phantom of the opera is here! Inside my mind ❤❤❤😍😍😍
NOOO....BAD ERIK!! That was the SECOND chandelier!!!
Yaaaaaas 😂
Too perfect!!
you know what's up lol.
I remember the first time I saw this aria performed, it was in a movie without any translation or context. My 14 year old self was cracking up, just thinking, "What in the blazing hell is she DOING?!" because all I saw was a woman dancing around a stage looking into a mirror lol. Now it's one of my favorites.
@AS Aww thank you for being part of the phamily 💜
You must have watched Phantom Of The Opera

Ah, my beauty, past compere!
I'm just thinking of Captain mimicking her now
“I don’t know why, but whenever I hear her it reminds me of a hurricane that hit my ship - when I was in the West Indies some years ago…”
THERE ARE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA REFERENCES! AAAAAAAAAAA
I fist read The Castafiore Emerald in about 1969. (I was so green -- I was about 8 --I thought Iago was Lago). Anyhow, I have finally got around to finding out what the 'Jewel Song' sounds like. I doubt whether Signora Bianca Castafiore could have matched this fine performance of Ms Gheorghiu. "Irma! My jewels!"
I assumed for many years that Herge made the song up.
Me too, a lifelong Tintin fan and I've only just found out that it is a real song! It is perfect, Angela Gheorghiu sings it so well but I can't help giggling thinking of Castafiore.
I do concur, Captain Padlock.
Indeed. I am a fan of Tintin since I was 10 years old, and my question is the same : How The Jewel Song really sound is..??
Toranaboy634 I discovered The Jewel Song (and various other operas) through the original Phantom of the Opera novel. I fell in love, (listening to Dame Joan Sutherland) and now it's what I do professionally. Opera love origin stories are always the best :)
I too was drawn here by Tintin's Castafiore, finally, and I find this singer and song ravishing.
Christine, where's my Christine?
The quality of the video is amazing, you can see every detail in the scene (her expressions, the background, the costumes). I want to thank you for posting this video with subtitles that way I could enjoy not only the music but also understand what the singer was saying, really thank you.
The Jewel Song, performed by a jewel of a singer!
I'm glad Christine got the lead role, if you know what I mean... x)
One of the most beautiful renditions ever expressed of Gonoud's classic Faust.
I saw Gounod’s Faust sometime in the ‘80s but had forgotten that this opera was the source of the aria preferred by Castafiore. I am helping someone to learn to read at present and gave her a copy of the Castafiore Emerald book. Now that I can connect the Tintin book with Gounod and from those glean significance of the aria it makes both the opera and the Tintin book more fun…
I have always loved La Stupenda singing this aria but Angela is certainly the total package ; voice, looks, acting, charm.Thank you.
I never seen singer that sing that song perfectly. She is the jewel .
Her beauty past compare those jewels bright she wear!
my favourite soprano for all time
Best performance of Jewel Song I've ever seen!
I was thinking that too!
Oh god you’re like missing literally 50 older singers version
OMG Angela works magic here! I love her, she is spectacular!
She is remarkable.
It's amusing to me that Herge actually could not stand opera; his annoyance of it showed up in his caricature of the typical oepratic soprano in the form of Madame Castafiore.
I, for one, do not share his views. This music is beautiful.
It was partly because as a child he was made to listen to his aunt sing opera
thank you royal opera for delivering such a great work. Bravo Gounod Brava Gorgeous Gheorgiu, who is probablly my favourite soprano
So this what this song sounds like.
does anyone know who sings the mazm version?🥺
It appears in the credits, the name of the soprano, if I remember correctly she is a south Korean singer
I was looking for that too! Mazm's version is amazing!
Her name, according to the credits at the end of the game, is Heewon Lee. I couldn't find her version online though...
Anyone here from mazm's phantom of the opera game?
Me!!

Meee! The game is so good
Oh my god i thought im the only one
@@spademaru9767 the same! 😂
The sound showing the range of that voice is excellent [Sound Crew] and the location [Would like to know] is just so anciently exquisite. Nice Job.
Best performance of this ever.
Marguerite :parfaite !!!! Quelle classe ! Et ce trilles final avec le contre Ut , lancé sans respiration entre les deux ! Bravo ,ça c'est du très bon travail .! L'une des meilleures versions de l'air des bijoux avec Caballé .
Splendid! I saw her as Tosca two weeks ago at the ROH. Spectacular voice and stage presence, still at the top of her game today!! I really hope to see her in Otello and Manon Lescaut! I'll travel anywhere in this world to see her in these roles!
Gotta be honest. Didn't care much for Gheorghiu before, but this was a fantastic performance. Blew my socks off.
I first heard the name of this song from "The Adventure of Tintin" series
She is amazing and diffenately one of the best at singing this song both her and Maria Callas
For some reason I’ve never put together the similarities between this and Candide’s Glitter and be Gay.
I feel kind of stupid.
Stupid!
Yeah, I just found out that Glitter and Be Gay was inspired by Ah! Je ris de me voir si belle en ce miroir.” Musically, they aren’t very similar, but lyrically they are similar. The main difference is that jewels for Marguerite aren’t connected to tragedy. She believes that the jewels will make her look like a princess who will attract Faust. Cunegonde is a Baron’s daughter, so she does come from nobility, even if it’s of the lowest order, but gaining jewels from several men who have raped her and destroyed her family after escaping the war, hasn’t bought her genuine happiness. She’s just hiding her unhappiness behind false laughter and the jewelry they gave her.
what a headvoice,,,, chestvoice,,,, topvoice... wonderful
That's the BEST the BRIGHTEST
the GREATEST performance,
I've ever seen and heard.
I love her everything as a Marguerite !

Gheorghiu just doesn't fail. They say she's difficult to work with but it's no wonder why! Of course many people cannot get along with her: she has high standards and so many others are simply mediocre! She has my admiration, respect and sympathy.
Why do you think that other people are mediocre? People may be mediocre around you in your life, but if a professional is a high-level professional that means he is surrounded by people of his level. Talented people are surrounded by talented people.
If Gheorghiu is one of the best voices that means she works with the best professionals. And disrespecting them is not a class act. It's just a symptom of narcissisism.
@@omg9261 Excessive political correctness and naïvité is what I read into your comment
speaking about narcissism, i think the fact that my comment is backed by 50 people speaks for itself, so i suppose you are in fact referring to yourself as unclassy + narcissistic
Castafiore. Yes, the artist performing here is doing an outstanding job, but I'm sorry, I just can't help it.
Once again proving that jewels are a girls best friend! Fabulous rendition.
Sensational rendition! Singing, expression, technique, bravissima! This production is simply amazing, Alagna as Faust is equally phenomenal. I also like how this David McVicar's production dressed her from Eduard Manet picture "Un bar aux Folies Bergère". So witty and appropriate, as her character aligns nicely with that image.

Delightful as always.....even though this aria is not on my favourite list lol!.....Do love this artist singing anything!!!...
This is the first time i see & hear the song..from bianca castafiore (tintin) just from the words..
Simply fantastic!
Just wonderful
The best Margarite so far!!👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I have to write an essay analyzing this piece, any suggestions?
You could analyze how the aria illustrates her vanity and how it foreshadows for later in the opera. Just a thought.
