FINALLY- NOW I get it. Something Terry Lewis once said in an interview about how Prince indirectly influenced the recording of the Control album. Up until this commentary session, I couldn't underatand what he was referring too. Prince's legacy runs deep.
3:15 a lot of Prince tunes have 2 bass figures on them. He crammed the space sometimes with that and polyrhythmic electronic drums and effects and other times sparsed things like on ‘Doves’ and ‘SOTT’ and it never sounded crowded OR incomplete. He knew exactly how much the tune called for.
@@theteleisewilliamsexperience their sound was their sound not Prince’s. They were influenced by him but they were also influenced by other artists like Sly Stone. They created their own unique sound just like Prince created his own.

@@Regkam2 Reggie, you are right, but he said Prince created the Minneapolis Sound. He didn't say he created the Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis sound. I think he's just saying that that particular style of music is from the fountainhead of Prince's teaching?
Want an example of what Sheila E. is talking about? Listen to her album version of "Oliver's House", you can hear Sheila E.'s timbale drums stand squeaking loudly during part of her solo towards the end. It's rattling in time with the beat so it sounds as if it's part of the song. 👂 She's right. That kind of imperfection adds character to an otherwise sterile recording.
God, Jimmy Jam has lost a LOT of weight! I didn't even recognize him a first. I just hope that it's intentional and he's not suffering from an illness.
@joe jones - He suffers from diabetes. So if a person carries too much weight and suffers, it's suggested one should try to lose weight. Some people can do it by change of diet and physical fitness, and others need to do it via surgery on top of change of diet and physical fitness.
As a Prince fan I say, don’t even do that to Michael. Their talents were Apples and oranges. Micheal could play like Prince and Prince couldn’t dance like Michael. Stop it.

Love you Prince Rogers Nelson, wish I could bring you back. Thanks for all of the killer music, and RIP my talented brother!!!!
Oh wow !! The great Jimmy Jam !!!

Love this comment. Question: what does two bass figures mean?
Prince had vanity playing keyboard with Alan leed lmao 😂😭
Is there anywhere where i can listen to this? hahaha
@@Jack-iu9ko it on those jam session 1982 era
It was not Alan Leed. It was another Al and he was his photographer at that time. That was Prince, Al, Vanity and Jamie (not Jamie Starr) playing.
Music trends come and go; but still nothing better than the Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis sound, to this day.
Their sound is the Minneapolis Sound which was created by Prince

Just wonderful. Thanks folks for sharing with us.
Wow, this is even greater than the "Dorothy Parker" console mishap story. What Prince has done for Jam & Lewis early...
Jimmy Jam’s voice sounds like Neil Degrasse Tyson.

Prince was right in statement on the Tavis Smily show (PBS)...'TEACHING'...Now YOU hear it from his PUPILS...as result.
