- In this Season of Discovery video we go through the steps to obtain the Maelstrom Weapon rune for Shamans! It takes some time, but with some perseverance, it can be yours!
Please note that this has been hotfixed to only require 5 of each of the orbs instead of the 10 that it was originally, so this guide is still relevant, but item requirements are fewer now!

Need to increase drop rate not fun taking so long 👎
Completely agree. Slaying 40 mobs for 10 drops when you still have 20 more to get in other zones around the world does not feel fun. I get they are trying to make some runes more involved, but abysmal drop rates are not fun.
And fighting people for those 20 spawns was bad enough ...
This quest is absolute garbage.
It’s definitely not the best, especially with the not so great drop chances on mobs that, for the most part are not in normal locations.
@TheChigg I started out trying to do the quest, took a trip down to Desolace, ran into 8 different Shamans perma-camping elementals, and decided against it. Desolace is enormous and the Elementals sharing spawns with other mobs is ridiculous. Not doing this quest until it's fixed. He'll, I might just roll Shadow Priest instead of Enh this phase, because, no thank you.
other way to get to badlands is STV - Duskwood- Redrige - Burning Stepps - Searing - Badlands. but basically you have to get all the flightpoints anyway so its rather the question which you haven't already and then i would go that route :)

Warning - the elite elemental at the end is 38 and hits quite hard. Recommend a friend of three if you're low/mid 30s
Making getting runes a boring chore instead of fun or group content is so stupid. Whats the thrill about running around desolace for hours not doing shit
I agree. Only thing I can guess was the goal here: We, as Shamans deal with the elements, therefore killing a whole buttload of elementals would make us understand the elements more. Honestly, if they increased the drop chance, this wouldn't be too bad of a quest line. Maybe make us get the items on each mob, or they could have us interact with the elementals through the use of a Sapta or something where they give us an item(needing 10 would still be okay at this point as it is guaranteed). The idea is there, just not the execution of it.

Finished the quest lvl 32, don't suggest it to anyone but it is doable. Just level till 37 and then do it.
I think they lowered the amount needed now form 10 to 5 of each, i have had it for a few days and had 10/10 airs 10/10 earths and just finished the water but it only required 5/5
so Charlga dosnt have 100% drop rate?
What is the dialogue/context menu addon you have? it appears when you handed in the quest and talked to spirit healr. Thx!

On to Phase 2…and another set of huge roadblocks for Shamans.
It really feels like the directive for designing this quest was "figure out how to waste as much of their time as possible on this". I've already spent over 4 hours on it just to get 2 of the 3 collection quests done. What a pointlessly tedious thing to add to the game.
For the flight master in Freewind Post, i have no Flight option. How do I get to the Water Elemental? Did they change this in a recent patch??
You should have an item in your inventory that causes the zone to change appearance. Use it and then the dialogue option should be there.
pro tip. go get a frost protection potion

i spent 3 hours in bottom west , found 8-9 mobs = 0 drop
i went to 70 60 huge area with lots of mobs, started clearing them and so many Elementals respawned
i got 10 in like 40mins
That's really good! I tried multiple locations, and maybe it was just the layer I was on or something, but that is where I found almost every single orb was in the southwest. Happy you had better luck than me though!
yo! looks like they changed from 0/10 to 0/5 each quest and i feel like droprate is increased i finished it so fast today literally like 1-2h max and most of the time traveling on earth quest i got all 5 in like 3 mins
What addon is that called that you can see the spell in the floating combat text?

That is the one I am using. I have not modified any of the settings, so that is the default.
Whats the minimum level you think this could be done? currently 34 but I see you did it at 35 so maybe i'll be good?
You could potentially do it at 34. The air elementals are only lvl 32-34, but the water are between 35-39 and rock are 37-40. Make sure you have good and water to recover after pills and you should be okay at 34, although it’ll put you to the test.
@@TheChigg I went to badlands, attempted to kill a single 39 earth ele, almost died and dipped to SM for more leveling lol.

The desolace one was the worst for me, the drop rate was like 20%, I spent 3hrs to get 10 even I was lvl40 with a mount.
I feel ya. Desolace wasn't the most fun, but was easier for me to do, as I did that part myself at lvl 34. Got to 35 and went to the other two places(probably shoulda waited until at least 36 for them, but I am a glutton for punishment lol)
Does this malestrom version works with nugcombobar and weaka7ra ?
Nugcombobar, I am not sure about this one, but i did create a Weakaura that displays the current number of stacks.

I believe you can, but to be completely honest, I am not 100% sure. It's worth a shot to see if it works in a grp! I am actually gonna be helping my buddy get this rune tonight, and i will update if i was able to go with him or not!

The drop chance of this is just totally un-fun
Low drop chance is fine with high mob density but these few mobs + competition + low drop rate is just not fun at all
What level were you when you did this?
33-34 for the wind elemental part, 35 for the remainder.
Just put a water resist totem and he will be easy !
can confirm as of 2/14/24 that they are now 5 orbs instead of 10

Yea, I legit wasted a day from leveling, just to get this rune. Strangely enough, I think it was worth it though. This rune is stupid good!

Are you using a macro? Can you share?
I don't use many macros, but will share the ones I do use.
Start attack macros:
#showtooltip
/cast Lava Lash
/startattack
and
#showtooltip Flame Shock
/cast Berserking(Racial)
/cast Flame Shock (keep in mind on this one, if you are not a troll, take out the Berserking part. Also this will always use your highest rank learned Flame Shock)
The other macro is for totems:
#showtooltip
/castsequence reset=5 Strength of Earth Totem, Searing Totem, Mana Spring Totem
When using this note: Every five seconds it will go back to the first part of the sequence. You can change around the order of totems based on what you do normally or if you find a better order to place them!

It feels like it sometimes for sure! At least they dropped the items required down to 5 of each instead of 10.
I wish they wouldn’t have gated almost all the runes behind high level content. Would’ve loved to be able to actually “discover” during the leveling journey. Instead it’s rush to max level and now you can finally get your runes. Hope they don’t do this again next phase.

Fuck this quest : 6hours 42 minutes to complete. Im far over enjoynment of this drop design.
Never been a fan of low drop chance quests myself. I enjoy grinding mobs for the xp, but when im required to kill the same thing over and over and the mobs are not close together at least, i struggle to enjoy it as much. Hopefully they end up changing something around, or at least learn from the feedback we provide that we do not enjoy this as much.
Only 5 items needed now, much less contested and higher drop chances. I killed 9, 7 and 8 elementals (desolace, marshes, badlands) and got all items at level 33 solo.
