I wanted to be a runner, but I was out of shape, so I started walking, slowly everyday, my mile took almost 12 minutes, I continued my habit, a few months later I was running 7 miles a day and got my time down to 8 minutes a mile. I also lost 31 pounds.

But i am just worried that stratergy. Because sometimes you can find usefulness in books that you thought that aren't relevent to you. If you change books you are reading before you finish them. You might get only limited perspection that keep you interested.

  • @ikbenmarko

Some things I've learned from this AMAZING interview:
    1. *A habit must be established TO BE IMPROVED. Start working out 5 minutes, then improve. THE ART OF SHOWING UP.*
    Figure out the logistics.
    2. Bad habits: instead of making it obvious to do, make it invisible.
    Restructure your environment.
    3. Start small, pick ONE thing. People LOVE progression.
Habits are the foundation for mastery.

This interview was better than a course. Wealth of nuggets in under 1 hour just proves this guys effectiveness. Some of my takeaways:
    1)Habits multiply overtime
    2) everyday you’re casting a vote for or against yourself by your actions.
    3) Choose reinforcements that align with your desired identity
    4)Habits shape your internal beliefs

“A habit must be established before it can be improved.” -James Clear
“Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.”
“Habits that are immediately satisfying are more likely to be repeated.”
“The challenge for building good habits and breaking bad ones is often finding a way to pull the long-term consequences of your bad habits in the immediate moment, so you feel a little bit the pain right now and want to avoid it and the long-term rewards of your good habits into the immediate moment so you have a reason to repeat it again in the future.”

    1. Start each day with an affirmation to take one action that will serve you
    2. Write one key value that you would like to live by

We are creatures of habits and still, the power of routines is drastically under rated. If there is one thing in our personal life which doesn't come with a form of a recipe, it's our routines. We should read and learn about how they work but it's a trial and error thing. On the other hand, what is 100% sure, it's the necessity of having them. I can't imagine my mornings without a clear roadmap for the first 2 hours.

After a while you get comfortable and have to be mindful and aware to go back to the drawing board and Find ways to get better!

I haven't had an alcoholic drink for 9 months. I drank at least a bottle of wine a night and at least 2 a night friday and Saturday nights. In this talk James said people tend to go back to old habits because of their environment. What i have noticed is my friends continue, even after 9 months, to make a big deal of me not drinking. They continue to hassle me saying things like, "oh your not the same your boring now, your no fun...." im so annoyed at them for doing this. Im not starting again no matter what. But i can see how peer pressure can make someone start drinking or taking drugs.

How long does it take to build a new habit is forever because if you stop, then it's no longer a habit. Makes sense. Thanks James! And thanks Lewis for always giving such great videos. I've been meaning to say thanks for a very long time but I keep on forgetting. So I guess I should include this type of activity in my habits. :P Anyway, you're videos are really helpful. Thanks again for providing such helpful and valuable information. Really appreciate it. Have a good week! =)

Also remove all notifications from the apps. So you don't check twitter, facebook, email etc all the time. Also don't have apps like facebook or twitter on your homepage. But have them on the last page or at the back of all your apps. Then you really have to find the app and you don't click on the app as a habbit after checking the time or something else.

I found James' book on my journey to figure it out how to become a successful person.
Atomic habits was the first book I've read about habits. During my life I've been heard about habits, but I had no idea of the real impact of it in our lives.
The book atomic habits awaked me up to this important tool developed by our brain and to the consequences caused by them in the long term.
I read this book 1 year ago, since then, I truly can say that I'm a totally different kind of person.
This book changed the course of my life for better.

Ok I’m watching this now after it’s been officially established that’s Atomic Habits sold 10 million copies and I can’t say this is such a deserving reward for Mr. Clear. He really is on to something new with habits and weekly emails are such essential for productivity.

success only lasts as long as you do the things that made you successful. for example, when you stop eating healthy/going to the gym, you gain the weight back... so make lifestyle changes that will get you to your goals and beyond, making it who you are, not something you are doing for x amount of time.

everything is "uphill" / maintenance. But mindset can shift permanently. i.e. me realizing that In the long run I'll do more work pedaling a bike in a lower gear (though it feels easier in the moment) I'd cover more distance with the same effort pedaling in a higher gear thus yeilding a faster speed. It's the habits that can take us from pedaling at low gear to higher gear/ higher speed = actually less work in the end and more distance covered!!!!
