CHANGE how your dog REACTS to TREATS during training

- This is a video excerpt from one of my presentations I give at dog training seminars and conferences on the concept that you can change the dog's behavior and interest in food. You can condition food to have a calming effect or an arousing effect depending on how you use your own MOVEMENT. I have other videos on the topic of building or lowering arousal for food that you can find below. This one focuses only on the dog trainers movement. All dogs are different so for some dogs you may only focus on training them to be calm around food and never excite them, while others you might be working only on exciting them because of their low drive to work for food. Some dogs you may need to work on training them to be calm around the food in one situation for example service dog public access work while get them excited for the food in other situations like training a recall or teaching an alert behavior.
This is one of those dog training tips that are very basic but create an amazing results.
Thanks so much for watching!
Happy Training!

The calm markers I learned from you have made a big difference for my dog. It's nice to be able to train exciting behaviors, tell my dog "all done", and have the ability to use the same food used in training to reward an offered calm settle while I take a moment to review before training again.
Thats a great idea and way to use them!
I love how patient the others dogs are
thanks!
You are so amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks!
It's interesting how you make the terrier to be calm in the calm marker. (a low drive dog for terrier)
Thank you for this detailed video !
Awesome! Going to start implementing this with my Aussie “Fry”. I love the intense engagement you have with you dog, and the other dogs being calm beside you is crazy cool. Keep the content coming, this is real actionable training that is helping me with my dogs!!!!
Thanks 🙏
Just wanted to say I hope you and your family of pups are well. Take care Emily🐾🐾💯
Awe thanks! Yes we are
Another great lesson. One would have to be very observant and inventive and experienced to arrive at these without such help.
Thanks!
loved this video thank you!
Your videos are always so helpful for my 3 border/aussi’s. ❤
Insightful as ever, thank you!
Thanks!
so helpful. im going to try this when shaping a behaviour as my dog gets too excited for the food and makes shaping super frustrating.
Thanks!
Emily could you please make a video about cues? Which do you use? It is not so easy to find logical cues. Greetings from Germany and thank you for your great work.
thats a good topic, mine are so odd though... cause I have freestyle cues I dont want to sound like other cues so I really have to get inventive... and still have some that sound similar like Cross and Crawl which are both done in a down... Or twirl and turn. wait and wave ...
First and foremost, you are the best. I am preparing for a puppy, which I last had 13 years ago and so I have a lot to re-learn and catch up to, and your videos are the best resource I have found by far. Thank you so much for all that you are doing for dog owners, but especially dogs, worldwide.
With previous dog, I had a problem with eating trash from the ground (outside). Many games and training features throwing treats on the ground. Will this reinforce searching for food on the ground (and would best not be done/replaced by an alternative) or can the dog distinguish the circumstances in which he can and can not eat what he finds?
I have 11 dogs and cannot stand feeding time due to the barking!! In the past I was in a hurry or on the road performing and just fed quickly while they barked etc…. I want to fix this to a peaceful feeding. They also wake me up barking due to them knowing breakfast will come soon! HELP ITS DRIVING ME BUTS
Gosh. I’d set an alarm for like 3 hours before they wake up. Have the food in the bowls if possible prepared. Let them out to the toilet then feed them while they are not expecting it. Then feed them 3 hours earlier for dinner when not expecting it. Then gradually get them back to the times they usually eat. Sometimes changing the bowls and the noises they hear and where they eat or wait can help speed the process up cause they can become sensitized to it like a dog who barks at a door bell even when they know no one is at the door because it’s been so conditioned.
Would you consider making a video about dog aggression specifically towards small children? (Or direct me if you’ve made one already that i couldn’t find…). I work for a veterinarian and REGULARLY send clients to your channel for any kind of training issues they come to us with. But today I had a client whose 13-year-old terrier had twice attacked their 20 month old grandbaby who recently came to live with them. This dog has had zero experience with small children but the attacks have been completely unprovoked.
The veterinarian basically concluded that the 2 ought to just be kept separate while the baby was living there, but I was certain you would have a better solution…
And by the way, this video was especially helpful for me in training my own dog so thank you for that! I feel like you’re reading my mind sometimes!
babysafedogtraining.com/author/madeline-gabriel/ this is a great wealth of info on dogs and babies. Yes they need to be 100% separated for safety. The dog might be having pain, or just not used to children, I suggest getting a professional trainer to go over a management and training protocol. I know the options sounds sad but sometimes a 20 month old human can make the life of an older dog stressful with all the noise and movement. Having the dog in a different home while the baby is there might be in the dogs best interest of peace and quiet in old age too. I know it’s a difficult situation
I just got a new puppy! I've been binge watching your videos for about a month I feel prepared but kinda nervous. My puppy is so hyper oh lord. he's very food motivated so that's a plus but there's so many things that I want to teach her. What's the first 3 things you teach your dog other than crate training? If you could send me a link to one of your videos! Thank you so much for all the hard work you do!
Can you show how to teach your dog frustration tolerance? Mine vocalizes when she gets frustrated and it's like nails on a chalkboard to my brain. This happens when she's excited to see people, eager for toys or to do tricks, or doesn't understand what I'm asking
Break up steps and reinforce the dog before they get frustrated.
How to train food motivacion outside?
Id first work on just being able to take food, you could do this by going places with just a mat and having the dog settle on leash, and you just sit and relax and drop a treat between their paws, doesnt matter if they dont eat it, dont pressure them, then at some point they might. Then playing games like this ua-cam.com/video/lLyiQODnR1s/v-deo.html
Hello! :) Did you remove your membership program on your UA-cam Channel? I can't find it anymore.
Hi Emily! Sky sometimes will sometimes bark at me to pick him up. He will sometimes add a play growl. Then zoomies. He’s not quite two. I keep trying to calmly reach out with a treat but obviously I’m doing something cockamamie and reinforcing it. He only does it when it’s his idea to be picked up. He’s trying to dominate me?
Can you post a video showing how to teach a dog to throw a toy? Thanks!
Do you want the dog to play 1 player fetch?
@@nimfbdhdkdm Not necessarily. I would like my dog to toss me a toy, and I'll toss it back to her.
トレポンティハーネスとラフウェアのハーネスならどちらがオススメですか
For me I guess it really depends on the shape of the dogs body what harness suits their shape if it’s not fully adjustable. I like the hurtta harnesses on my border collies but for smaller dogs I dislike them. They are too bulky. It really depends you just find one that doesn’t limit their movement, doesn’t rub their skin and doesn’t rest on their throat
Unsubbed.
Sorry it wasn’t your cup of tea.
Yeah...I won't support any "trainer " that aligns themselves with the radical animal rights movement.🤷♂️
@@k.doolittle2473 totally fine and totally respect you for it
