The only reason 7.62x54 Rimmed still exists today is probably because of how awesome the PKM is. That rimmed cartridge is never going away.
Reason two is that the Dragunov is a DMR that just refuses to die, even if it’s gotten long in the tooth by today’s standards.

You surely know that during the Bosnian war, the Muslims called the M84 "the sower of death" or just "the sower". That nickname says it all about this MG.
There is a "joke" in the Serbian army, that a soldier who was trained to use the PM (puško mitraljez/machine gun) M-84, when someone asked him later what he was, worked in the army, to say "spread Ceca's legs"! 😁😉 The joke refers to the auxiliary legs for stabilization and the nickname PM/MG itself!

James, Yugoslavia was never apart of the 1955 Warsaw Pact as they fell out of Soviet favor in 1948. The reason they had a license to copy the PKM is because the license belonged to Izhmash. The Soviets had no say in who had copies of their weapons.
Every factory in Soviet Union was owned by government, and managed by different ministry. Izhmash was managed by ministry of defence. Any license agreement was approved not only ministry of defence but also commi party leaders.
@@РоманЗайцев-ю9т doesn’t change the fact that the license wasn’t given for Warsaw Pact reasons, but rather strictly monetary as the USSR and Yugoslavia didn’t have a relationship during that time.
Yugoslavia did get back to being good with Soviets again, and as you can hear in the video guy said they bought the PKT license from Soviets.

While it's easy in the U.S. to think about ultra-modern LMGs in new fancy calibers with wiz-bang optics and stuff...the reality is that for 94% of the world...a modernized PKM is absolutely the best GPMG in existence, by a long margin. Lightweight, insanely reliable, available in the two major calibers a nation is likely to have (7.62x51 NATO and 7.62x54R), a proven track record, ease of maintenance and parts/servicing, etc. It also likely costs about 10% of what an ultra-modern SIG MG would cost them, while shooting cheaper/available ammo, etc.

The PKM is probably the best light GPMG. The M60 is a bit big and heavy, and the FN-MAG 58 even moreso, but the PKM is an upsized AK and is more portable to carry and move around but delivering the same firepower.

I am a Serb and a veteran of the last war in Croatia and Bosnia, and I agree about the quality and reliability of the M84 "Ceca". But now it's a bit out of date, because more mobile weapons are being sought today, and if I were a technologist at Zastava Arms, I would reduce the dimensions of the weapon and make a similar machine gun, but in 7.62x39 caliber, because more ammunition could be carried and a soldier could carry it of smaller growth.
That would be called an RPD. But you had RPKs already (M72), were those not good enough?
@@grimmig13 I never liked the M72, it was just a lengthened AK with a longer and thicker barrel. PKM (M84 ceca) has rapid fire. I would go there to shorten the barrel and make something like the FN MINIMI, but an even shorter barrel by about 80-100mm
@@zeljkodejanovic8786 this man gets it. One thing tho, barrel length in MG's isnt just about accuracy or transportation/handling, you need all that metal to absorb heat. Bigger/thicker barrel the better with these mg's. However, a 556 ultra compact polymer MG would absolutely be amazing. Take some ques from AA's chassis system and build an mg around that.

Ah so this is what happens when you leave a PKM and a Type 88 LMG in a room for too long together...
This isn’t a weapon. It’s a lifestyle.
Unfortunately, when I served in the Yugoslav army in 1986, it was not in use. At that time, as a machine gunner in the department, I was given a Hitler buzz saw or M53 witch is copy of MG42. Its burnishing partially fell off from intensive use, so I was constantly fighting rust on the field Easy to shoot and heavy to carry (12,5kg) and a big, big consumer of ammunition. During the war in 1999 I had the opportunity to try M84 from my comrade, it is really accurate and it was brand new black with wood stock.
Yugoslavia and Finland did not strictly go with Western or Soviet equipment, at times they had quotas for each and at times they preferred one over the other. At various times, Yugoslavia used primarily American tanks and fighter jets, at other times, Soviet, and eventually domestically made. Small arms happened to be dominated by Soviet designs, but this is not an accurate picture of the entire Yugoslavian arms supply situation. The same goes for Finland.
Both countries wanted reliability. That's why they both have AK platform as a main infantry weapon. As much as other guns improved reliability, AK is still going to be the best, and during the wartime when you don't have time to clean it, Zastava m70 will just work and chug out any round. As war in Ukraine showed, its all about mechanised battalions. Most fights happen within 100 m, mostly even less than 50 m even though Ukraine is basically just a plain open field. That bit of extra accuracy on AR15 doesn't mean much in those engagments. Also people compare fully decked out civilian AR15 to old AKM platforms and say AK sucks and recoil is strong. New AKs are out for a long time. New m21 is fully modular, with easy calliber switch and shoots grendel. Its perfect. Reliability of an AK, modularity and ergonomics of AR, and balistics of grendel round. Perfect. Yugoslavia and now Serbia was always neutral. We don't like USA and we don't like Russia (Soviet Union). Thats why we don't care for either side. What works works, doesn't matter where it comes from.
Yougos used tommy guns, grease guns, m1 garands and stg44s too

Interesting to compare the M84 and PKM with the South African SS77. It uses the PKM gas regulator, locking mechanism of Goryunov SG43/SGM, feed and barrel locking mechanism of MAG58, double recoil spring system based on Armalite AR18. Externally, it resembles the PKM.

It's all truth . Salute from 63 airborn...
I have a Zpap M70, and i'm more than impressed with Zastava's quality. All the rivets are perfect. There's no rattles or weird noises. Probably the best stamped import AK out there right now imo. The only minor complaint i have is that the gun is pretty overgassed out of the box, So if you plan on adding a can, you'll definitely want to address the gas system.
My M85 (AK "pistol" in 5.56) seems first rate. Super loud with a huge flash, but that's what you get with 5.56 out of a 10" barrel...
During my military service, I was gunner with M-84. At first, I hated this machine gun. As a scout, I had long marches in the field every day during my training, and I was quite bothered by the weight and ergonomics of the "Ceca". Everything changed after the first live firing. I realized that I had a beast in my hands and something worth carrying. From then on, I loved this MG. All the stories about its accuracy are true. I had better shooting results than my colleagues who were using the M-70, and often even those who had the M-76 rifle.
I was fortunate to shoot M84 back in 1993-94 in full blast 💥. Also had a PKT mounted parallel with main cannon in my tank M84. Yes , Yugoslavia had tank model M84 and heavy machine gun M84

my father carried a M53 (Zastava's copy of MG42) in the war colloquially called "Šarac" and he loved the gun because it fired insanely fast and as he says "eats through ammo like a whore takes money". he later on got a Ceca with ZRAK optic and he loved it as well especially because its a bit lighter and you can actually see where the bullet lands and correct instantly as you're firing because of the optic

Hello. Yugoslavia while it was a communist country, it didn't align itself with Soviets nor Warsaw Pact. In fact, Yugoslavia was not in great relations with USSR for quite some time after Tito Stalin split happened. Yugoslavia was founding member of Non Aligned Movement.
JNA adopted M84 because relations with Soviet Union finally thawed off at the time, M53 (MG42 copy) it was using was due for retirement, and because PKM was best GPMG out there.
One of the best gun channels on UA-cam
Ask albanians how Ceca sang on battle of Pastrik and how many of them ended there.
One advantage is the use of none disintegrating link. It simplify the mechanical operation. More complex mechanism, more chances of malfunction
It actually makes the weapon more complicated since the bullet must be pulled backwards from the belt and moved over to be inline with the bore. The older M9 disintegrating link used for the 30-06 Browning MGs did the same thing. I don't really know why the US and NATO decided to go with the M13 push-through design, but it seems that pulling that pulling the bullet from the link during the backstroke of the op-rod and chambering on the return seems to help consistency, going by the PK's reputation.
The PKM, and its derivatives, is the best LMG that has ever been fielded. This isn’t even a debate.

As @ForgottenWeapons said: It's so precise it's not even fun.... Reason why PKM ammo is slightly unbalanced with powder charge to force spread(???).
Anyway, I remember very well of this gun from army days. It comes with two barrels (one for RnR and second as pi$$ practice - for cooling, as long as barrel is whitish), massive tripod (with AA feature, and for some reason always ends up stuck between your ribs), 2-3 ammo box with belts and small manual machine for loading belts.
