FYI: The Retrospect show is Epica's celebration of their tenth anniversary in March 2013. Epica performed on stage with the 70-piece Extended Hungarian Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra and the Choir of Miskolc National Theatre.
the 'secret' of Epica, and mostly Mark, is that all the songs are composed with an orchestra in mind, it's not just slapped on afterwards. So that's why these songs work so well. This is how they are meant to be played (literal quote from the band). Love this band so much
Somehow Epica just keeps getting better and better!! They are already qualified to live in that RARE place where legends live!! DAMN!! Cannot wait to be at their concert in Cincinnati in Oct!! 😎😎🤘🏼
Loved the reaction - long-time Epica fan - when I originally watched this concert (I bought the live-stream, which was way more complex 10 years ago), I am amazed how well they pulled this show off. Not only was Simone about 4-1/2 months pregnant, and rocking several different stage outfits, but the intensity, and personal investment of the choir and orchestra was something that you won't typically see for a metal concert. The choir and orchestra were all in, and not just there to collect their paycheck.
Probably my favorite song from that show. It's a perfect performance. The original album version is a great single, this with the live orchestra takes it to a different level.
This was an insane show, and the very definition of over-delivering for your fans. 26 songs, orchestra, choir, acrobats and TWO visits from Floor Jansen. Astounding. 🤘😎👍
Hi Songs and Thongs, EPICA have so many outstanding songs, here is one of them, from their latest album, with footage from the current 2022 tour EPICA - CODE OF LIFE (VIDEO) video link posted below:
Great reaction 🤘🏻more Epica please, such an awesome band. You should check: - Crimson Bow & arrow (attack on titans opening 1 cover) - Edge Of the blade (official video)
I love it when at the orchestral opening the second violinist cracks a big smile when she realises the crowd starts clapping along. It must have been quite an experience for the orchestra and choir to be part of a metal concert while being used to the much more sedate setting of regular classical music.
There's 3 hours of this awesomeness on the Retrospect concert blu ray! Can't wait to see what they do for the 20th anniversary show on 3rd Sept (I have my live stream ticket, $US17 is a bargain for these productions). The only small technical glitch on Retrospect was the light show tends to overwhelm the HD cameras. The Nightwish Wacken concert, from the same year, is an example of how to get it right, the visual and audio mix are spot on.
SUGGESTION: A (very) young Simone in *_”Cry For The Moon”_* : ua-cam.com/video/FLT1oU1OGwQ/v-deo.html&ab_channel=EPICA This song is a statement against organized religion. In specific this song deals about the sexual abuse of little children by catholic priests behind closed church doors. It also states the hypocritic behavior of these priests (and the church in general) telling us what to do and not to do, accusing us of being sinful, while committing worse crimes themself.
Great input, as always. Can't say I'm a big/decently proportioned Epica fan, but I have special respect for them. They care a lot about their fans. Mark Jansen is an angel of a person btw. Quite, but a truly kind human being. That being said, their orchestration is among the better ones, since they are vital to the songs. To me it's the overall consistency of pacing/style/dynamics, that hinders it for me a bit. I mean, listening to album after album, a lot is too familiar. But for sure, their shows are always a great event.
Listening to this as I'm working away on designs, but had to go back & look at the end where all I hear was a big slap & Sharlene say "Shutup now"... it was Harry's thigh she hit! 😆😆
I hope you can also take a look at one of Epica’s old ballads - Solitary Ground. They have remastered the music video for this amazing song!!! Cheers!!!!
Hi guys I just popped in to tell you that I found something I know you are going to love I didn't check the library to see if you have done it yet but his name is Tim Henson and the band is Polyphia instrumental progressive music I can't say it's jazz or rock or flamingo Latin music it's a bit of everything all at once playing God is the name of the song by Polyphia I know you are going to be impressed by the musicality of the band. Oops I forgot it's Polyphia time and I will always be here for that. As always peace from Stan the Alaskan.
A few days ago (see below) This diamond should be in your collection. I would like to share with you my discovery. The voice of amazing beauty, power and depth, crystal clear, I heard from a beautiful girl and was fascinated by her. Her story moved me even more. At the age of 3, this little girl was found at a bus stop with a broken collarbone and other psychological and physical injuries. The child ended up in an orphanage, where her future foster mother worked as a masseuse. The story itself is a ready-made plot for an Oscar-nominated film. This girl is now 19 years old. She has about 70 victories in various vocal competitions. If you understand what it is to sing with soul, then this is about her. Diana also has a huge army of fans, and reactions are gaining tens and hundreds of thousands of views. The total number of reactions on UA-cam to Diana is about 13 thousand. A few days ago was the release of the song Revelation. This song was the first completely original song by Diana Ankudinova, she herself wrote the lyrics and composed music. Several dozen reactions, all reactionaries are shocked once again, but now not only by Diana's voice, but also by a talent that can create not cheap one-time music, but hits for all time. Meet Diana Ankudinova and her song Revelation.
As an orchestral musician .. these types of gigs are fun.. but only if the parts are interesting lol.. too many times you’re back there just holding whole notes as chord support 🤦🏻♂️ This seems like it would have been a fun one
Oh yes. Epica 's music incorporates orchestra and choir in almost every song. Not just to back up the band but as a integral part of the song. The choir is quite often the third voice, besides Mark and Simone. On every studio album choir and orchestra are present. The last two albums do not contain any samples at all, as Mark Jansen said ' Nothing sounds better than a human playing an instrument'.😉
I agree that everything works together perfectly here, but for me personally they could take out everything except Simone's vocals and it would be just as good. She has such a uniquely beautiful voice...did you know that the first time she auditioned for anything was a school musical at the age of 13 and, although she didn't get the part because she was nervous and couldn't act, the music instructor liked her voice so much that they REWROTE THE MUSICAL so that Simone could sing a song! She also told Simone she should get singing lessons because it would be a shame if she didn't do anything with that voice.
Yes, it's amazing. 🙂 Did you realise this song doesn't have any harsh male vocals in it? Most Epica songs do. You are definitely losing out by not reacting to much more Epica. Seems like you're only reacting to paid requests which is a shame. Epica is a phenomenal band with top notch musical compositions. They have around 120 songs now, which means you will probably never hear even 1/4 of them because you won't get that many paid requests.
We are not only reacting to paid requests but we do prioritize them. That said, we have a whole list of bands and songs that we will get to in due course. It does take some time though and because there are such a lot of bands and songs to check out we can't focus on just one. Epica is amazing and we will always react to them, even if it does take a while to get to. Check out our previous livestreams if you haven't yet, we have reacted to quite a few Epica songs on the streams 🤘🏻
You are from South Afrika right? If you speak Afrikaans then you should have no trouble at all pronouncing Dutch names like Jan Goossens. The only reason Afrikaans as language exists at all is because South Afrika was a Dutch colony. Afrikaans = literally Dutch language, with a dialect. It is amost identical to Dutch. I am Dutch and I can understand Afrikaans almost 100%. There are only some small cute difference like the word 'braai' that you use for barbecue. Braai comes from the Dutch word braaien/braden with means to cook/fry. Here we call it barbecue like the Amerikans. So in fact you speak more Dutch than we do in The Netherlands :)
Here's something. I have always thought the drums, particularly that snare, are a little too forward in the mix; not just for this song but for this entire concert recording. Thoughts? To be clear, I'm not saying I don't love it. This is just a minor annoyance.
here's my take, nothing objective just my stylistic observations. it is loud but I think they're mixed that way because the percussionists/drummer are acting as the bridge between the orchestra and the band. it's got such a central role in an almost 80-strong wall of sound that it really has to stand out or everything else doesn't quite mesh right, it all feels more adrift and random. plus arien's just a damn good drummer whose finesse I'm happy to not have to strain to hear.
ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i LOVE epica, and i mean LOOOOOOVE epica... but i rlly dislike them live. Unleashed is beautiful and perfect but the way she changes the beat of the song (yes im more than aware its thousand fold harder live but... it still sounds better in their official music video, duh) has me annoyed and upset

at the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven. Best live show I've ever attended to. Just mindblowing. ...and Simone was 3 months pregnant.
the 'secret' of Epica, and mostly Mark, is that all the songs are composed with an orchestra in mind, it's not just slapped on afterwards. So that's why these songs work so well. This is how they are meant to be played (literal quote from the band).
Love this band so much
The thing that makes Epica so special is their lyrics. Most of their songs are deep in meaning ... they are all 'food for thought'!
Please listen also to the beautiful ballad of Epica Tides of Time(lyrics).
It is always Time for Epica 🤘😎🤘!!!!!
thanks for duing this one guys! this remains one of epica's most beautiful songs, together with orchestra and choir makes this song so good!

EPICA COMING TO AMERICA IN SEPTEMBER I GOT MY TICKET !!! YALL SHOULD GO SEE THEM !!!
Epica write songs with an orchestra in mind,, lots of bands like Metallica use an orchestra to do something different to their allready good music..
Always thought this would have made a great James Bond song because of the orchestral sound.
Great input, as always.
