Also the old growth you referred to is just western Washington’s second growth lol. I see them all around Seattle and stuff.

When the cone is still attacked to a branch, does the tip of the cone
point TOWARDS the trunk OR, AWAY from the trunk?

Can Douglas fir hybridize with western hemlock?

I don't think so, they're different genera, one is a Pseudotsuga while the other is a Tsuga

I wish you wouldn't call a Doug Fir a "Pine"

Firs are in the "Pine" family. I assume that is what he was referencing.

Yes, Firs and Douglas Firs, which are not a Fir tree, are both part of the Pinaceae family which includes Pines. However, I was taught in botany that true Pines are those of the pinus genus such as the Ponderosa, White Pine and Lodgepole.

@@davidpuzzo9747 I feel like he's using the word "pine" synonymously with "conifer" which is pretty common. It's not used that way in more scientific circles. And I also think it should be avoided, much the same way as he's calling all conifer cones "pine cones".
It's hard to correct people and not come off as pretentious or negative in other ways because I really like this video and the presenter seems knowledgeable.

"It's a desirous tree so it's not a pine tree". Pine is only one of many coniferous trees. Fir... such as douglas fir is not a pine. It's a fir tree. Those are only two. Aspens are nothing like pine. They are not needle trees; They have leaves. Before you teach people, please learn your trees.

douglas-fir isn't a true fir tree tho!! it is its own genus altogether, psuedotsuga. true firs are in an entirely different sub family.
