With enough mechanical advantage and line you can move anything.

I got home but 4 AM and got a call at 6AM to do a 14 hr run at 7Am. I was bottom man for seniority and still on probation. Man that was a rough day!!

Thanks Matt for the picture with my 5 year old at Eagles L. between the Yuba Lake jobs. Too bad we didnt have more time to visit. He was so excited to see one of the "yellow jeeps" from the TV that he watches with Daddy.
Nice to see others offer to come & help out. At one of the beaches near me they launch fast to minimise time in the water & soft sand. For retrieval, they take the trailer in deep to drive or float the boats on & have a strap/s already attached so the vehicle can tow it out as soon as the boat is on. My dad took this a step further by installing a drop down full size front wheel so you could push the boat & trailer easily or tow it. Didn’t look like that sand/mud was real soft so they must’ve been there awhile to sink in. Time is often critical in getting out fast when in these situations.
Well he has people, vehicles not under his insurance, equipment not under his control…. Fixing stuff is cheap. (Plus he knows a really good body guy) if anyone he asks to help gets hurt….
@@georgespalding7640 yea I've seen it, With that much suction and a big ol snatch block it's a good idea too. Just not something you typically see Matt do

A curiosity question, I realize that with a lifetime of experience, you have probably thought of every conceivable way of doing your job successfully. What I’m curious about, is your reasoning behind not using blocks and tackle as force multiplies? Your channel is the perfect mix of great personalities, a scenic travel venue and some very hands on practical common sense, engineering and ingenuity. Thank you all for the great content. 👍🏻
Get the high lift out and jack it enough to break the suction and pull with the high lift still under it. It will tip over towards the Morvair. I've done it a few times in that kin of nasty mud. I've had to do it in super deep snow, too. Following a snowmobile trail way back into the mountains then decide, we're waaaaay too far back here. Tried to turn around and 6' of powder off the snowmobile trail wasn't good!!! Put traction boards in the snow, high lift and jack up the truck til it was back at snowmobile track / hard pack level and winch it over until the jack tips, rinse, repeat. Took a couple hours but back then, all I had was a come-a-long!! Had to drive backwards about 20 miles to get out! Neck hurt a lot!
Just seeing these recovery's and knowing that the heavy wrecker will make these jobs so much easier must be frustrating but it's going to make it all that much more rewarding when it's done!
If Matt needed my help and I could be a help, even once, that'd make my year. Honestly though, if you buy a winch, I'd say your thinking 50/50 it's to help you and others. Getting down and dirty coming out victorious on the other end is such a rush. Great episode.
It's so totally awesome to see people chip in and help Matt with his recoveries. And it shows that he knows how to utilize what he has on site... 😎 But I also caught myself thinking "That would have been a piece of apple-pie-with-cream-and-cherry-on-top-cake for the heavy wrecker..." 😂😁😇
No, that's basically what Matt did with the tools he had. To do it with a Jack you would need a jack that can lift it high enough and you need a wide base so you don't just bury your jack in the sand.
@@dr.floridaman4805 I was saying that a jack is a perfectly good way to do it if you make sure your jack works on your vehicle and can handle the terrain you are on. I don't think I would rely on finding a flat rock though. If you're going to bring a hi lift at least bring a board or something to place it on. Also, a hi lift only works if you have lift points around the perimeter of your vehicle to lift from. The majority of the vehicles in Matt's videos don't.

dodge 2500 megacab sxt curb weight 6700lb
trailer approximately 500lb
polaris jetski x2 approximately 1000lb
morrvair at 5500lbs
morrvair was trying to pull combined 8200lbs sunk to the frame.
the math:
8200lbs sunk to the frame x mire factor 3 =24,600lb resistance
apex 12000lb winch with 3/8 freedom winch line with a working load limit of 15,000lb on the line itself.
2:1 mechanical advantage shown in the video brings the fall line force to 13,530lb which is higher than the capacity of the winch and close to the working load limit (breaking the line)
3:1 mechanical advantage would have brought the fall line force to 9840lb which the morrvair attached to an anchor (truck) would have easily and safely pulled the dodge.
in order for the morrvair to pull the dodge out without additional help or anchor you would need a 8:1 mechanical advantage which i don't think matt has enough tackles and line for compound winching techniques. though most situations wouldn't need such techniques in these light vehicle recoveries. mainly used for heavier equipment such as military vehicles and construction equipment
I do wish matt would learn the math on winch calculations to know when his rigging is under the breaking load instead of "gut feeling". he was very close to breaking that line and if that dodge weighed 500lb more than curb weight he would have snapped that line.
the owners of the dodge didn't help by leaving the trailer hooked up. if you unhook the trailer the resistance the morrvair would have to pull would only be 20,100lb
at 20,100lb he could easily pull with that 2:1 ratio with a fall line force of 11,055lb. safely under the winch and line limits. he would just need to anchor the morrvair with a truck.
With enough mechanical advantage and line you can move anything.
I like the idea of leaving the hood open as a shield incase the line breaks. Never thought of that before 👍

@@jasonbecker4997 He initially didn't like using winches because he had to disconnect his battery and connect it to his winch everytime he had to use it, and it wasn't wired directly to the vehicle nor was it connected to the frame, it's wired properly now, and is connected to the vehicle. therefore he uses it and it does not slow anyone down.

It almost made me cry to see the first truck... such a nice vehicle in such condition
MORR really needs their own Land Cruiser 😁
at least they'd have one 4x4 with AC that works!
I was a recovery guy for a towing company for 15 years. My girlfriend knows exactly how your wife feels. But I always enjoyed doing the recoverys more when she came along. I've been out of towing for 5 years and love having my nights and weekends back.. o and holidays.
And your social life too!! Was on call my first year with a company and wanted to go to a party Saturday night. I called dispatch and found I was #6 on the on call list so I went. I got home but 4 AM and got a call at 6AM to do a 14 hr run at 7Am. I was bottom man for seniority and still on probation. Man that was a rough day!!
Matt:" my rig is too light for this kind of jobs"
Eric:" that's why my rig is heavy"
Matt's rigs is purpose build for the desert and Eric's for the woods and mud.
Nice job.
Thanks Matt for the picture with my 5 year old at Eagles L. between the Yuba Lake jobs. Too bad we didnt have more time to visit. He was so excited to see one of the "yellow jeeps" from the TV that he watches with Daddy.
It's both scary and sad to see how low these lakes are
Great lakes are above average for 100 years. Everything fluctuates man, change is scary but with death comes birth.
Another excellent recovery, husband and wife team this time! You guys are awesome.
It is amazing how those big rocks just jump up out of the dirt and high center vehicles
People don’t know how to use a jack.
@Wandering Nomad trees only do that to me when is raining really hard and I have been drinking
You know Matt is concerned when even he starts popping hoods for safety lol
Well he has people, vehicles not under his insurance, equipment not under his control…. Fixing stuff is cheap. (Plus he knows a really good body guy) if anyone he asks to help gets hurt….
If you watch that recent UA-cam video of the man who was killed in this kind of scenario, you could understand why he's popping the hood.
@@georgespalding7640 What video?
@@999torino MadMatt4WD
@@georgespalding7640 yea I've seen it, With that much suction and a big ol snatch block it's a good idea too. Just not something you typically see Matt do
I too liked seeing others helping out. Looks like it was a wonderful day ... just don't forget to stop and smell the roses along the way. You'll be glad you did. Your vids are worth your effort, thank you!
Cheers to the Landcruiser helper and hope you get to do something special for Jamie.
So we got a call, In todays episode:
Matt goes to market,
Travor stays at home,
Peanut goes wee wee wee all the way home.
po' pee wee!
Really Really Late..LOL
@@YAH. Or, you are SUPER early for Sunday's
Matt doesn't carry a jack or traction boards
No matter what or who I'm watching if I get a MORR video I click on it!
Just seeing these recovery's and knowing that the heavy wrecker will make these jobs so much easier must be frustrating but it's going to make it all that much more rewarding when it's done!
Hi, I like to videos
True.
Videos always have, for my as is welll
I'm not sure what the comment means, but I gave it a "like" for the effort.
My to like is videos though?
@@AmpdLSU precise, when good that nice. But you this one in well? Amazing.
What a gorgeous sunset shot of getting the tractor out at the end. Great job all!
I look for your videos everyday Matt love it when u post
Weds Fri and Sun is when they post new content. Just FYI, so you don't need to look every day.
@@alfredocarpaneto5976 thank you
If Matt needed my help and I could be a help, even once, that'd make my year.
But I also caught myself thinking "That would have been a piece of apple-pie-with-cream-and-cherry-on-top-cake for the heavy wrecker..." 😂😁😇
Kudos to Land Cruiser guy! Awesome attitude, dude!
If I got stuck on a rock like that truck, I think I would use the jack and see if I could lift the truck enough to move the rock myself. Am I weird?
No, that's basically what Matt did with the tools he had. To do it with a Jack you would need a jack that can lift it high enough and you need a wide base so you don't just bury your jack in the sand.
@@Psyco913 flat rock, tractor jack
Optimism builds planes
Pessimism creates parachutes
Both are needed
@@dr.floridaman4805 I was saying that a jack is a perfectly good way to do it if you make sure your jack works on your vehicle and can handle the terrain you are on.
I don't think I would rely on finding a flat rock though. If you're going to bring a hi lift at least bring a board or something to place it on. Also, a hi lift only works if you have lift points around the perimeter of your vehicle to lift from. The majority of the vehicles in Matt's videos don't.
