    Quiet and accurate is nice, but someone should remind Federal that.44 Special has a MAP of 15,500 psi. This is probably in the 7,000-8,000 range. Make the jacket a touch thicker, up the velocity 200 fps and it would still be quiet and easy recoiling.

    Firstly I hope you feel better. Secondly you did a nice job demonstrating these ammo choices. I love .44 special. I have a Charter Arms bulldog in .44 special that I will sometimes carry, but my ammo choices have been hit or miss. This might get me interested in my little bulldog again. I carry the Critical Defense in it now, but this ammo could change that. I'm ordering a couple boxes today to see how it works for me, so thanks.

    Interesting! We can sure see why .44 Special has been a handloader’s cartridge for years. When I got my first Charter Arms in the mid 1970’s there was nothing out there. I stayed pretty cautious, carried a 240 grain Winchester .433 Luballoy gas check SWC (wish I could still buy that bullet) over 7.2 gr. Unique. This is a plus.

      Haha, ur old. I wasn't born until 80 (parent's born 1949 and 1950). I recall hearing the name Luballoy before. I personally have not loaded a ton of .44 Special but I have loaded a few and I can't even remember what they were, but I do sort of remember them being in the 300 ft lb energy mark. I haven't used Unique before but I load a lot of fast or generic powders like Universal and Titegroup so it was one of those, and it was a jacketed bullet. Been out of hand loading for a good year due to primers being so expensive anymore.

      @@GunSam I’m getting back into loading after taking a couple decades off. Still have Bullseye, Unique and 2400 on the shelf (also 296, IMR4227 and H-110 for those magnums). Going to bite the bullet and buy some small rifle primers (I’m OK for small pistol) but ouch, those prices! Luballoy was a sort of copper coating, looked like Remington Golden Buller but copper colored. In those days, a very weak 246 grain RNL was the only factory .44 Special you could find.

    I really like that .44 special round (the .45 is great, too). A .44 spl that will expand, not overpenetrate, is accurate, etc. is darn hard to find. Given the very low recoil and noise, that might make a good home-defense round, too. As always, I appreciate your shooting at longer ranges, too. Great shooting

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  Рік тому +4

      Yes. In my experience you sort of want this low recoil type of an option at about .38 Special energy, but all the others in this range will not expand at all. Pretty good design to expand at 700+ FPS, just goes to show that expansion isn't entirely dependent on velocity by itself.

    This .44 Special Punch could be so much better if its velocity were closer to 1000 fps.
    700+-815+ isn't much.
    And places the .44 Special in almost the same category as .455 Webley used to sit and where standard pressure 9mm currently rests.
    Slinging bullets with about 350-390 foot pounds of muzzle energy.
    Instead of the 420-500ish pounds of muzzle energy that it COULD be generating.
    A bonded HST bullet at 1000-1100 fps would give better performance and still likely be safe for something like Charter Arms .44 Special and/or a .45 Colt Bulldog revolvers.
    Which could be proven out in a lab.
    And if it's not?
    Federal could follow the path of other ammo makers manufacturing hotter than dismal performing standard velocity/pressure ammo and publish warnings to the effect that THIS line of ammo isn't meant for Charter Arms, or older guns in poor condition.
    If more ammo makers would do this thing?
    Instead of jacking prices up for mediocre performing garbage?
    Charter might finally wise up and put out a better quality product than the expensive-for-what-it-is, revolver line they keep churning out.

    Even though you’re only a few feet from the chrono you’re grouping is amazing. My theory on the projectile ending up rearward of the maximum penetration depth is that the gel acts as a trampoline. Once the bullet’s energy has pushed the gel to the maximum elasticity the gel closes up around it. Just my thoughts. 👍🇺🇸

    Great to see a 44 Spl load that performs so well at low velocity. I could actually live just fine with . 58-.60" expansion and, say, 14" of penetration. But i will take it. I was thinking of the advantage of low noise level a few seconds before you mentioned it. I love my 357's, and my 40's, but i would hate to light off either in the house. Quite a few people only own 1 or 2 handguns, 1 of which might be a 44 mag for hunting or woods carry (or maybe they inherited it). Anyone in that situation needs a good Special load for the house, and it looks like we have one. The 45 did very well, as was expected. Looks like Federal had figured out how to get the Punch JHP's to expand well at low velocity. Good for them.

    I had a S&W Model 21 'Thunder Ranch" .44SPL awhile back and was pretty much dismayed at how utterly anemic all available on the shelf .44SPL ammo was. Everything I tried was extremely low velocity and that included premium ammo. Gold Dot. Silvertip etc. Out of a 4" barrel I could barely achieve anything over 800fps and even with the lighter 180-210gr rounds. Pathetic. I finally discovered Underwood and Buffalo Bore ammo and only then got reasonable results when testing. My favorite was Underwood 190gr SWCHP doing 1100+fps out of a 4"

    that 44 special is looking good for a low recoil option also something I have seen is some 44 special ammo will actually give you the same a little more velocity from a shorter barrel 44 special chambered firearm like a charter arms bulldog or smith and wesson model 296 than they will from a 44 magnum not sure why

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  Рік тому +3

      I think it is the same effect as the Federal HST .38 Special+P where even in 4" Model 10's .38 Special only, velocity was something like 750 FPS but in a 2" revolver it was about 830 FPS. I think that this .44 Special is so low powered that the bore drag of extra barrel length is starting to overcome the velocity potential.

    • @GunSam

    The 44 Special is normally loaded similar to a 45 ACP +P, and can be loaded way up or down. I am not sure of that load. Seems down loaded. It can very comfortably exceed those velocities. They are both excellent and capable cartridges. Probably the best for many purposes. Thanks for the video.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  Рік тому +4

      Definitely low loaded. I think it was loaded for a snub and the extra barrel length is causing enough drag to slow it down, that's just how low the power is, but it needs to be that way for lower recoil. Much of the Buffalo Bore .44 Special is about 500 ft lbs in this revolver.

      Being the "Punch" line from Federal is supposedly optimized for defensive anti-personnel purposes (not real sure what bullet they are loading), more than likely it's a fast-flash powder, loaded in low grain weight, to optimize short barrel use (Ruger GP100, S&W M69, Charter Bulldog).

    Little known fact: JMB designed the original 1903 prototype for Army adoption (progenitor to the M1911) around a .45acp that closely approximated the .44 Special [~200gr @ 900fps, iirc] but the US Army insisted on something closer to the proven .45LC from Peacemaker days, so that's how we ended up w/ the 230gr @ 825fps ball round for .45acp; the Army wanted horse-stopping power, not merely a man-stopper in those halcyon days when horse cavalry was still a decisive arm of conflict...

      Bore drag. If you go low enough in power to where the max velocity is achieved in a 2" or 3" barrel, more barrel will actually slow it down. .45 ACP was and still is pretty awesome. They developed it right around 1900 by testing on livestock to skirt around the Hague convention rules of not using HP ammo (though not required to as the USA didn't sign that part) and came up with a round that even 90 years later, proved to be the only FMJ cartridge to drop the goats in the 1990's Goats at Strasbourg test. "Stopping power" charts sort of lie in some regard, as in general with more real world info the .45 ACP 230 gr ball round is basically 'as good' as a 9mm hollow point.

    What I’ve always wonder about is the transfer of energy? The 45 is a man stopper because it’s a slow fat bullet. Penetration? Get me?

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  Рік тому

      The bullet weight is really what is making it effective. The original handgun testing in the early 1900's was done on livestock and the .45 ACP was shown to be more effective than 9mm on livestock, and that translated over into people too, but this was all with FMJ ammo.
      Basically, when you have 230 gr going 800 FPS you have a bullet that is less likely to veer off course or prematurely stop if something gets in the way like ribs, so the momentum it has pokes consistent holes in straight lines to hit organs, as where a 9mm might veer off and miss an organ or vessel making the .45 ACP have more actual vital hits making it have more "stopping power".
      Simple math dictates that more vital hits means a higher percentage of stops. In modern times both a 9mm and .45 ACP in hollow point ammo are pretty close in effectiveness as with hollow points there's not a lot of difference in their ability to stop someone, but the .45 ACP still retains that momentum edge to go deeper due to the momentum from the bullet weight.

    The first shot into the pure gel with the 44special could be represenitive of a gut shot which tells me it would stay in the body and not over penetrate. I'd like to see what it would do in a full load.44 Magnum round.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  Рік тому +2

      Most rounds would stay in a body. 10% Clear Ballistics is much like organic ballistics gel in that 12" to 18" penetration represents 6" to 9" in a body. A full load .44 Mag will penetrate about the same as the .45 ACP if it is a 180 gr hollow point, the 240 gr hollow point will over penetrate to maybe 22" or more.

      The first white tail deer I shot with a handgun was a Smith and Wesson 629 6" at about 15 feet with 180 grain 44 special PMC. It works. The following 8 deer I shot was with 180 grain red box federal from Walmart. All were 1 shot kills however I only recovered 1 bullet from a six point buck at 10 yards. This was after my daddy told me I could never kill a big deer with a 44 Magnum. When I pulled the trigger on that 629 the first time I knew I had a powerful handgun.

    • @GunSam
      @GunSam  Рік тому

      @@bigmedicine8042 Killing deer is one of those things, sometimes powerful cartridges don't work, sometimes low powered ones work. I shot about three 200 lb deer in my life as I rarely hunted, I experimented with different guns. The .270 Weatherby Magnum was the best, the .444 Marlin I used another year was okay but not great, then I used a 12 gauge slug. Where I live and used to hunt basically has no gun rules. The slug did terribly, but I have heard of people easily taking deer with 9mm pistols. You just never know.

    Very much appreciate this video. I’ve only recently became a 45 ACP fan. It’s not that I haven’t liked it for decades. But it’s only lately that I’ve come to appreciate it as much as I appreciate 44 Special. I have 44 Spl in Rugers gp100 5” and Blackhawk 4 5/8” Bisley. I only handload for both. But haven’t truly accuracy tested them yet. After finding 44 SPL-like loads in 44 mag brass in an S&W 26 I was pumped about purchasing these 2. I want to find a great load for the 200gr XTP for deer hunting with the gp100 and one for the Montana Bullet Works 280gr LBT plain base. They are both far stronger than current factory ammo is loaded. They are still well below 44mag strength. So I’m not trying to go there. I’m just hoping for good expansion out to 70yds or so out of that XTP. Any reasonable recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for a great video in 2 great calibers

      I find the buffalo bore .44 Special to be quite nice. I believe their XTP .44 Special is a 180 gr, and they have this really nice Tac-XP or XPB in 190 gr if I recall, great loads. They load the XPB to overall length the same as a .44 Magnum to use more powder. All the buffalo bore.44 special ammo I've tried is right around 500 ft lbs in my model 69 here.

    I always felt 180 grains was a bit light for a .44 caliber round, although the load here seems to perform admirably.
    I would like to see it put against Federal's .44 Special Champion Training round, which is a 200 gr. SWCHP loaded to an advertised MV of 870 ft./sec. (I seem to recall this ammo was formerly marketed as their "Train & Protect" line of ammo).
