    Hey Spray Jones. Just wanted to tell you that your channel has been a huge inspiration to me on my new house build that I am building myself as an owner/builder. I'm in Calgary, and just yesterday they finished with spraying 2" 2lb foam over 4200 sqf of gravel for my slab house. That is just the first part of the system. Once I get concrete and all interior walls in and am ready for it, they are spraying the entire place, roof and all, as a conditioned attic, which is something I learned from your channel as well. This stuff isn't cheap, but this is the way to go, and I wish more people knew about this, and I think your channel is educating countless people on what is out there, and hope over time the industry changes to adapt. I must have watched every single one of your videos by now, and every time I pickup on something new and informative. Watching foam being sprayed is very relaxing for me :D The guy who did my foam also watches your channel and knows about you, and said you are super knowledgeable about this stuff, which is pretty evident. Keep up the good work!

    Closed cell foam left exposed in work spaces (storage, shed, shop, etc.), will readily accept a paint finish to avoid foam surface oxidation. Painting can greatly improve long term aesthetics and light reflectivity of the foamed surface. I've over-coated CC foam in a couple buildings by spraying the cheapest white paint I could find from Home Depot or Lowes (don't recall). There's probably a recommended 'wait time' before painting CC foam, in my case I'm sure there was at least a week interval. In the first building I painted a test spot before committing to coat the entire surface. That was 20yrs ago, still looks good.

      This isn't advised because certain paints don't provide a uv block. It should be a foam specific coating

    Excellent content...I quite enjoyed that. I'd like to know more about adding sprayfoam on the inside of a house against a rigid DuPont style foam board. I'm planning a house build with no OSB. Instead I'm using 3" closed cell rigid board and sprayfoaming 3" on the inside of the house against the board. In case you are wondering why the DuPont...I got a great deal on a half truck load. I got lots to insulate the slab and house.

    For a new residential foundation build (9ft tall below grade) in the midwest (Missouri), is it possible to determine if it's smarter to apply closed cell on the EXTERIOR or INTERIOR WALLS for a better performing foundation wall as far as insulation? Thank you and really enjoy your content.

    • @SprayJones

      Interior. The weather issues for application externally are troublesome.

      Outside, starting with your water proof mastic, EXTREME attention to detail of water drainage through proper placement of gravel drainage material and pipes, closed cell rigid foam board (bare minimum two inches). If you start with quality construction outside of foundation wall is critical. All that is just for starters. This is a great topic for discussion in any state.

      @@SprayJones saw a spray foam application to commercial bldg in Carlsbad NM over typical osb framing. They installed long brick ties that pulled thru the foam (8”) and placed mortared river rock on exterior. Looked good as a “stone exterior “, but more importantly I was impressed that it would offer outdoor protection from elements while maintaining full exterior foam coverage.

    I can easily put my thumb through open cell!!
    How do you deal with tight areas where you cannot get the gun in to spray properly?
    Think rim joist where the HVAC contractor installed ducts 6" away from the rim, or where the last joist is only and in or so away from the bottom plate.

      Get pipes removed, sometimes you have no choice but to fill spaces up with open cell foam because there is no other way into them.

    Hey Mike, great content!
    I found you thru MR Post Frame when they had their insulation issue on the Mad County Build, I’ve been subscribed ever since.
    My question is about 2” closed cell directly to metal. I completely understand how it adds to the structural integrity. But if house wrap is used does this impact that integrity? I know I don’t NEED the wrap with the closed cell but to properly install our windows the wrap is part of the process. Thoughts?
    Kohl Cavanah
    About to start out mostly self built 48x36 post frame home in Southeast Missouri
    Edit: I just watched you video on house wrap on metal post frame siding. I really want to skip the wrap but I need to be sure I’m meeting window install requirements.

    • @SprayJones
      @SprayJones  Рік тому +1

      These are two separate issues.
      The wrap crowd wants the ability to remove the siding at a later date and NOT have the SPF adhered to it.
      The direct to metal is what most have to deal with for retrofits.
      I am pretty sure that you can have windows properly installed with out needing large amounts of wrap. There are membranes and framing details to facilitate this. Just takes some planning.

    Does the smoothness of the finished coat have any indication of the quality of the job? Noticed in almost all of your videos, the foam goes on extraordinarily smoothly and has a nice finished coat. I had 3" of spray foam done on the underside of a subfloor (crawlspace for what was formerly a 3 season room, now enclosed), and it's what I'd call lumpy, however that almost might be since they were spraying overhead rather than in front of them on a vertical wall.

    • @SprayJones
      @SprayJones  Рік тому +7

      Smooth is hard to do, even for us. When overhead or underneath you get what you get, some days are better than others.

    Hi Mike - love the channel. Curious, when closed cell foam is sprayed into a wall cavity of 2x4 studs - if the exterior sheathing somehow fails or absorbs too much water have you ever seen the exterior side of the studs begin to rot in-between the closed cell foam? Assuming it’s not able to dry to the exterior for some reason.

    Would you recommend spraying closed cell directly to the underside of a metal roof or best to use plywood sheathing before installing metal roof? This would be at cottage in Quebec. Thanks

    Hvac /OCfoam related question.
    Should a home in the south humid climate be blowing cold air into the attic space; be drawing it out? Or combination?
    The rooms at the end of my house are still toasty while rest of house is chill. I am thinking because the sun blasts that side that the heat is still making its way into attic.
