  • Identity politics is one of the ruling ideas of our times. In this clip, Professor Frank Furedi of MCC Brussels explains why the obsession with identity is destroying European societies.
From our conference 'The Diversity Obsession: Can Europe Survive Multiculturalism'.

    Just raising one specific point:
If forced "Diversity" is our strength - as many in the West pretend it to be! - what about the deep division arising amongst non-native communities living in the West, whenever a war or other serious & violent conflict comes to the surface abroad?!? Where does their LOYALTY go to?!?...

Exactly! Identity politics becomes addictive and lost its validity decades ago.

I don't know what my "identity" is, but I have managed somehow. That said I am, having listened to this, getting a bit worried for the future.

Identity politics lowers the bar of understanding yourself.
Even worse than that, it tells you that your 'self' is somehow interesting.
Your superficial attributes are somehow interesting.
Understanding what is a human being has potential interest - if you know how to investigate this creature.
But this requires you to negate your 'Individuality', your 'ego'.
It is your ego that gets in the way of understanding what is a human being - (because the ego always has ulterior motives and will struggle against seeing clearly).
So understanding what it means to be a human being is one of the most difficult activities - there is no formula or set of rules you can follow.
Because of this difficulty, the bar is lowered, so that everyone can graduate the 'EXAM' of 'identity'.
And, just as what happens when standards are lowered to 'help' the 'failing' - - the results are that the 'stupid' are artificially elevated - rather than allowed to struggle through their stupidity, however painful, and come out the other side, wiser and infinitely more human.

In psychology it is called an internal locus of control where you don't need outside validation of who you are as opposed to an external locus of control where you always require validation. The latter is not a psychologically healthy way to live.

"Diversity" is used deceptively. When referring to the quantitative benefit of the concept of diversity, what is meant is the inherent advantage that arises from a diversity of expertise, such as an economist collaborating with a mathematician or physicist to solve a problem, where a clear, demonstrable benefit arises for a range of problems due to the added insight of two disparate sets of expertise (i.e. economics and mathematics). The dishonesty then occurs when this form of diversity is conflated with "diversity" that is entirely due to ethnic or cultural differences. Of course this implication is neither stated explicitly, nor verified.

FWIW, Hungarian has a somewhat unique history: the language has nothing in common with other European languages that are rooted in Latin, because Hungary was conquered and occupied by an invading tribe of Huns that came from the Ural region of Siberia and brought with them their own language, which remained the official spoken language even as the invaders themselves vanished over time (Hungarians are for the most part displaced members of adjacent European regions, even though their language is based on completely different concepts). Also, today, when you listen to the language spoken in the region where the Huns originated, there is an uncanny resemblance to the modern, spoken Hungarian language.

Yes, but you have put the cart before the horse! There was no technocratic or administrative act that brought these weird counter-identities into being. That came later. The first thing that happened was the discrediting of the overarching, national identity. This happened both piecemeal and holistically. Economics, broadly defined was at the root. When society could no longer function in the old way during WWII, technology made it possible to function in a new way. Unfortunately, the changes made cut directly at the cultural foundation stones. Suddenly, it was no longer satisfying just to be Hungarian. People cast about for an identity that was simple and unequivocal enough that it could be their 'all-in-all' No shadows of old battles lost or principles compromised. No tough questions to answer. So they submerge themselves in it.

While I agree that it is perfectly true and just that Hungarians should be able to choose who they let in to their communities, they should do that after they leave the EU, and the commitments and treaties they signed when joining. Nothing is stopping Hungary from leaving the EU, and many Europeans would be happy for them to do so, as the current political tendencies are not aligned with the values the EU claims to stand for (they do a bad job of actually acting on these values but that is a totally different story).

The problem being no one asked the Europeans if those were actually their values.

@@softcolly8753 I think it's time for Europeans to return to tribalism in order to survive. The modern ideologies of capitalism and communism have eroded our sense of community and blood. Guess who brought such falsehoods? The bankers. The bankers that have replaced our tribal leaders and instituted a tax farm where all people are essentially enslaved. A tribal leader does not answer to the masses through the delusion of democracy, he simply protects his tribe. Many religious communities have this in action: the Amish, Hasidic Jews, Mennonites, etc. They are all essentially tribal communities that exclude themselves from the insanity of the modern clown world. They have high birth rates, low divorce, and most importantly, are living purposeful and meaningful lives. Everyone else in the modern Western world are living materialistic and hedonistic lives with no sense of purpose or belonging. No tribe, no family, no religion, no gender: no right or wrong and more easily controlled by the State.

The native populations of several nations would gladly leave the EU if they could reverse the massive damage done to their nations by massimmigration from the MENA region in particular.
Hungarians are to be congratulated for having had the foresight to preserve their nation as a relatively safe and well functioning society. People like the Swedes on the other hand, with their childlike innocence, are living in what is soon to become a failed state if demographics (replacement migration) and crime is not addressed forcefully.
Swexit is also a grassroots movement unlike enforced multiculturalism.

It sounds like a legalistic argument, which has a certain validity of course. Part of the idea seems to be that the EU has crossed lines which it ought not be permissible to cross as it is too great an offensive to national sovereignty, and done so without proper democratic process. And if we are going to argue the point from only a legal standpoint, Hungary should be afforded the same level of discourse, rather than exaggerated pejoratives hurled at it.
