  • Ireland's relationship with referees is in the spotlight after the opening Test match defeat to the Springboks on Saturday.
    Luke Fitzgerald and Ruaidhri O'Connor joined Will Slattery on The Left Wing podcast, with Caelan Doris' interactions with referee Luke Pearce a major discussion point.
    South Africa's more attacking style of play also caught the eye, although Luke thinks it might be a mistake for the Springboks to move too far away from a power game.
    The lads finish off by looking ahead to the second Test in Durban this Saturday and discuss what changes Andy Farrell might make after a suffering a number of injuries on Saturday

    Its great to see so many South Africans commenting on Irish rugby podcasts recently. I used to find them irritating, but they have grown on me. I really have to give it the Saffas, they are fully engaged with rugby and rugby content from all sides.
    And for all of their flaws they are proper, passionate fans and if every other group of fans supported their country like the Saffas did, rugby would be in a healthier place.

      To be fair I'm South African (and rugby mad). Even I get annoyed by some Bok fans. Some just need to learn humility. But I think these over zealous supporters exist because we feel the NH teams and pundits rarely give the Boks their flowers. I think it's gotten better, but some feel they need to give NH teams in particular some hate in return

    This is really interesting to listen to Irish podcasts and Pundits discuss the issue of player depth.
    The Leinster academy system is the envy of the world and yet Farrell has not utilised it to ensure the National team has the player depth to rotate the squad and blood new talent and minimise the drop off of player quality, now when injuries hit, panick sets in because the time and opportunities were not given earlier to the 2nd and 3rd choice players. Then we see players parachuted in out of position to play their 1st test against world champs and then they lament that they are missing the player who chose to go to sevens and left the space he replaced.
    Ireland have the talent but it is waisted if Farrell plays the same team week in week out and doesn't allow new talent to have an opportunity to grow into the team.
    Ireland will talk about being a weakened team for its injuries, but its not the injuries that weakened the team its the lack of investment in building squad depth and thats on the management.
    Flip the teams and if this was SA discussing the loss of their 4 biggest players in Kitsoff, DeJagger, Willemse and Am would we agree the Bok team is weaker and the drop off to current team is significant?
    Management must and always be developing the next squad while the current squad is at its peak.

    It ended up being 3 tries each, a different tmo on any other day perhaps a different stat there. Thats test rugby.
    Ire fans should take some comfort in that as after all SA defence is/has been a lot less porous.
    Ire were chasing the game from the start and were given a few get out of jail free cards with missed kicks on our side. Credit to them for hanging in though and never giving up.
    Even after getting monstered 'in that scrum' in the 77th minute, most folks thinking well that's done and dusted, Ire came right back and scored a try a minute or 2 later. Hats off. I reckon the Bok after match review being less complimentary when discussing these lapses in defence.
    I agree with Luke, everyone wants us (Boks) to play like other teams but that diverts us from our core strengths. I am all for a more expansive game on our part and having that skillset embedded in our box of tricks, it will keep other teams guessing a bit but it should not fundamentally change our 'dna' , just add to it.
    Ireland did not come here to lose and that showed on the park last Saturday. Despite who won it was an rock solid test match and both teams can stand tall.

    • @ItsBellers
      @ItsBellers 17 днів тому

      Not easy. And I would put more blame on the TMO for overstepping his mark. His job is to only get involved when something is clear and obvious. There was so much ambiguity around that kelleher counter ruck that he had no business calling that try back to begin with. I think Luke Pearce’s blunder was probably on the “no try” “try” decision. I saw one match in the 6nations where it was handled correctly where there was no on field decision and the ref merely wanted to check a grounding. Which was shown and the correct decision was made. I think if a ref needs to refer a try decision to the TMO. They shouldn’t be making a decision either way at all and check what they need to

    • @kristian762
      @kristian762 16 днів тому

      @ItsBellers ja I think the "try no try" tmo question is often better than making an on field decision. I don't even know if Pearce asked the TMO for any clarity, I can't remember clearly but I thought Whitehouse got involved without a request from Pearce

    • @notenoughstones3873
      @notenoughstones3873 16 днів тому +1

      I do rate Pierce but can see now why he didn’t get a semi final at the World Cup. I thought he got robbed but now I think he needs more time but he is good and could become one of the best given his age.
      As for try/no try call, Pierce was pretty confident it wasn’t grounded and people for YEARS have been calling for on-field decisions rather than the old try/no try protocol. I vehemently opposed the change and I predicted people would just shift their moaning to whatever on field call was made, and I was 100% right lol. Poor refs just can’t win. Murray scored less than a minute later so that decision was relatively inconsequential anyway.
      Don’t think TMO should have intervened for the Kelleher call but can see why he did. Although there were shenanigans in the ruck from both sides all game, this one did have a material impact where as most shenanigans don’t have much impact bar slowing the ball down a bit maybe. However once they go back, I think there was likely a penalty to Ireland first before Kelleher’s infringement so should have been try disallowed and penalty to Ireland.

    According of what I understand Ireland have been working longer with referees in consultation, and specifically with Andrew Brace and Frank Murphy. Both of these, still actively referee international games, so personally I find that a conflict of interest, and without stating the obvious.
    Peyper only joined the Springboks after he retired.
    The other problem I have with what happens online, is that if this was South African pundits or videos, Rassie would have been blamed on having a secret account posting videos.
    And stop saying "Stop blaming the referee", and then in the next sentence continue to go on about the referee. Refereeing is difficult enough, without all the people shouting about things that they should have seen.
    Let's get a scrum specialist referee and see how that also helps the referee.
    What you have pin-pointed is that we as South Africa have had a very bad relationship with referees before and had to adjust an learn how to handle this. Peyper only joined recently, so think Rassie had more to do with that, as he has made a complete 180 on how he handles this now.
    At least it gives the rest of us (the keyboard warriors), something to talk about ;-) although played rugby for more than 20 years.
    Let's just hope we can have a good game this weekend in Durban, and that we do not have that much talk about what-ifs and referees.

      Rassie on the other hand was deceitful in his video and said the ref was bias against South Africa and this resulted in death threats against a ref and his family as well as a whole new generation of SA fans that were kids then but older now who have a toxic, football like attitude.
      If you actually listened to the podcast they're most critical of Irish players, even the damn thumbnail says "Dorris must do better" he handled the ref poorly. That's not how SA reacted
      No one will tell you that refs don't make mistakes and sometimes you don't get the rub of the green. Only SA have ever gone as far as to say there's bias and conspiracy. Conflating the two is either really insincere or the distinction was lost on you.

      Ye no, you don't match the all time win streak record inclusive of an away tour to NZ and a world cup game against SA being second tier.
      The reality is that going into the RWC there was 4 clear top teams in SA, NZ, France and Ireland.
      Looking at those games Ireland beat SA narrowly, France beat New Zealand, NZ beat Ireland narrowly then SA beat NZ narrowly.
      If that last turnover against France went the other way you couldn't really complain but suddenly this book team would be QFs and the whole story changes. There was four great teams at the tournament all incredibly close to eachother. SA though I think had the most depth and I think that's why they won. They had the best rotation of players whereas Ireland couldn't do that and NZ and France less so.
      As for this weekend I was buzzing for it but unfortunately looks like Ireland now have a load of injuries on top of the absentees they already had. Frustrating, obviously you'd like depth but the sports just too small here. Expecting us to get slapped around now but hopefully a young player or two gets a chance to show something

      The biggest issue Ireland have in comparison to teams like England, NZ and SA is depth and available player pool in general (being such a small population). But ireland has a great rugby system from school boy rugby all the way up to their international team. I find it hard to imagine them dropping down out of the top 5 teams any time soon. Their rugby has just come really far in the last decade. Show some respect for that at the very least.
