When we sold my grandma's house, which had absolutely been a hub for our family for my entire life, I had to stop by and drop off a key that I found a week after closing. The last couple of years, the house had been so empty and quiet, which just felt wrong because there were ALWAYS people there. When I stopped in to drop off the key, there were a dozen people laughing in the kitchen, making dinner and playing games. It made me feel sooooo much better about losing touch with that house, because now I know that the house is full of joy and love again.

I had a very similar experience after selling my grandmothers home that had been where my aunts/uncles/mom grew up and congregated. When it was sold, my grandfather was in his 80's and needed someplace smaller and closer to family. A newlywed couple bought it. I was very pleased a year or so after it sold to drive by and see that there was a little swing set outside and a grill and that the garden was taken care of and the house looked lovely. It made me so happy to know it was housing another growing family. Once you get over seeing the house empty of your things, it's healing to see the house full of new life and being cared for.

We’re very complex, as humans. We can feel sad or even guilty about renovating and selling a home that has been in the family for decades while simultaneously being excited and happy for new beginnings. I’m sure this move is very emotional, and wish you the best of luck! Cant wait to see the new property & how you make it your own! 💫

When my parents moved from my second childhood home, part of the sale agreement was that my parents got to take my Dad’s office door with them. That’s where they had our heights marked. My Dad than installed it in the new home so they could keep marking the heights of their grandkids.

When my family moved out of my childhood home, I remember sitting in the corner of my empty bedroom and crying my eyes out. That room had been my safe space for so long, and it was incredibly hard to let it go. What makes me feel better though, is that the house was bought by another family with a little girl. I hope she enjoys my bedroom just as much as I did. I think about her sometimes, and I hope she is doing well.

I’d so hoped to purchase my grandma’s home when she moved in the 80’s, but the timing wasn’t right. When my family went back to visit Lincoln, NE for the last time we drove past the house and the new owners were kind enough to let us see the remodeling they’d done. One of the most wonderful days of my life because I was with my mother (who’s now been gone for fifteen years) and the owners had done such a beautiful job of updating but keeping the character - just like you did, Rachel ! Hold tight to the memories, they’re even more special when you reach my age.

I totally understand what you’re saying about that bittersweet feeling. The best way I can explain how it feels to me is that I’m a hobbit and I’m leaving my hole in the ground to experience all that I can. It’s hard to leave a place that comforts you and holds good memories, and eventually say goodbye. But you’re leaving for a new comfort. It’s a new start and another journey. As a born and raised Floridian- the idea of a basement just blows my mind still. Like. We have attics but most aren’t really…. Useable or practical. Like, you CAN shove a few boxes up into one if you’re willing to go through the effort but it’s mostly just a hot, humid, crawl space with insulation and wooden beams with rusty nails sticking out. But a BASEMENT? You have a WHOLE OTHER FLOOR of space that you can walk around and utilize. And then some (all? No clue) have that cool but creepy looking outdoor entrance???
    Just, totally mind boggling. XD

I remember that one live Q & A video a while ago when sooooo many people on live chat requested house tour and I remember feeling really bad for Rachel to feel this awkward obligation to do this, and I am so relieved that she is only doing this now when they are soon moving. Personally I think it is really awkward to ask a youtuber for house tour, I feel like it's pushing boundaries of privacy way too far. After all we are strangers to Rachel, you don't come up to a stranger on the street asking them to show you their house. Also, she is just a person, I don't think some of viewers really understands it that even when someone is having 1kk subscribers in they daily life they feel like a regular person, not a celebrity, so viewers should not ask for more that they are given.

I hope that we get to see you do a decorating video in your new home, whether that just be accessorizing an area or maybe doing another wall painting video.

It's hard to leave behind a family home. It helps to remember that it wasn't the place, but the people that mattered and those memories of spending time together will be with you long after any house or object is demolished.
I wish you (and the new residents) well and hope you all have fun settling into your new homes!

I raise a cup in solidarity with you, Rachel. I am currently cleaning out my grandmother’s home - who recently moved to an elderly facility - and while it’s exciting to see how much better the house looks cleaned up and knowing a new family gets to live there, it’s all a sad nostalgic feeling. Knowing I will never see the house of my grandma anymore, the house that was part of my childhood and the home of my grandma for 40 years.

We sold my grandmother's house several years ago, but we stopped by with her recently to look back on old times. Damn, do I miss going there, even though it was for family gatherings I never particularly wanted to be social at. There was a stone staircase leading up from the basement to the back garden, which I thought was a shadowy, scary but also intriguing sort of magic.

Oh Rachel, I'm so relieved to hear you share your complex feelings on moving. My mother sold my childhood home 4 years ago (which my grandparents had built and my dad grew up in) and I thought I would never be upset (she has hoarding problems and the house was a huge issue of resentment and chaos), but I cried like a baby when I realised I would never step foot inside it again. I get the excitement about the new house, but I'm glad you're taking the time to process those mixed emotions. Incidentally, on my most recent visit to my family, we drove past our old house and seeing someone outside, we stopped by. They let us come in and showed us around and they seemed really happy there, so it helped me lay some of my unresolved feelings to rest. Thanks for the house tour, you've done such a great job on the house and I'm sure you'll make your new home even more spectacular.

We felt the same way when we had to sell our grandmother's house. I kept reminding myself that the house deserves another happy family to come to it with their hopes and dreams. I guess it's silly to think of a house deserving something, but it just felt right. Your new house gets to be there to hold your new memories, but it doesn't mean that the old memories are gone! They are just in your heart and mind.

I just wanted to say, Rachel's sentiments at the end of the video really touched my heart. For me it was so hard to say goodbye to my family's 100 year old farm house. It was a place that felt safe & warm, and was wrapped in so many fond memories of get-togethers, holidays, and more. After the loss of my grandfather in 2010, I think the idea of leaving a place he and other members of the family, built from the ground up really stung. Though our circumstances weren't exactly the same, I think the feelings still apply. With that being said, I think watching Rachel talk about the feelings her and Nick were experiencing really hit home for me. Thank you for being so open and vulnerable. Sending so much love and kindness your way as you move. Oh, and one last thing, I think that your grandmother would be so happy for you both as you take such a big leap into your future! Love from the Midwest! ❤️

I of course hope my grandma is comfy there for at least a few more years, but I cannot think of ever parting with that house. It has seen four generations of our family and I have a dream of renovating it so that I can hand it down to my kids or someone else in my family to treasure. I feel you. When we left my mothers house after her death, the new homeowners sent us pictures of her prided garden being torn up. I never want to drive past there again...

My grandmother's home has been the heart of the family for as long as I can remember. We all gather for holidays, birthdays, an other celebrations at her house. Hearing you talk about VHS, the den room, and even the sunroom where the kids get to eat all brought back good memories. I'm in my early 20s, and I'm thankful it's still a place we can all gather and have fun.

I feel this so hard -- my husband and I just closed and moved into our first home this week, and while we're so excited for this next chapter, it was kind of sad to leave the apartment where we had all these big life events happen (bonding with his family, getting engaged, getting married, major victories, etc.). When we left, it felt important to thank the space for being our sanctuary during so many pivotal moments for us, and to be aware that it was likely the last time we would ever stand there. Too many moments pass us by without us realizing how important they are, so it's nice to be able to stand still for a second and really appreciate one chapter ending as another begins.

I never thought I'd be so emotional about someone who I've never actually met moving to a new home, but here we are. I am so happy for you and Nick though, and I can't wait to see the new place! I would also love decorating/home reno project videos in the future!

As a Finnish person I really appreciate the pronunciation of the word 'sauna'. 10+/10, deserves chef's kisses.

Rachel pointing to her neighbors homes describing them as very “close” made me laugh because that would be a dream yard out here in Los Angeles, you have to pay upwards of $1 million to afford a yard space like that out here 😭. Anyway, the home is very beautiful, can’t wait to see how you make the new home your own ♥️

I live alone in my grandma’s old 60s ranch style house and I can empathize so deeply with your bittersweet feelings over moving, I know when the time comes for me to leave here eventually it’ll be really tough for me too - you guys put so much love into the house and it shows and I’m sure your grandmother would be so proud❤️ Good luck in your new home adventure💕✨

After looking at Rachel's closet once again, I started thinking that she could sew Nick some things 😂

My grandfather passed away at the end of September and thus my grandparents' house went up for sale shortly after, because no one in my family could afford the taxes involved in the land transfer. They were the original owners in the 50s, having raised my mother and aunt there. My dad was absent for most of my life so my grandfather stepped in a lot when my mom needed help, and my sibling and I stayed there a lot in my childhood. I relate hardcore to the heart stuff at the end and I think it's part of an extended grieving process to let go of things that you need to outgrow. These places held us tenderly and it's a blessing to live in a time and place where photos and such allow us to remember and bring these things forward so viscerally.

so Nick is the Sanderfan AND has a full set of Wheel of Time hardbacks, I heartily approve =D Really interesting seeing all the updates you did to the house (and very encouraging to someone who may be looking for her own house in six months or so and will only be affording older houses xD) and very excited to see more of your next place!

Dearest loveliest Rachel, it's such a wrench leaving somewhere that means so much to you. You do not owe the past your future.
You are going to build the loveliest life in the new house. 💚🌿

Ooh I love that. "You do not owe the past your future."
What an encouraging statement. I hope our beloved Rachel sees your comment and finds peace and comfort in it as they move forward into a space that will allow them to grow, and that they'll truly be able to call their own. 💚💚💚
