We participated in the Veganuary challenge this year - going vegan for the month of January. I didn't think it was so bad. For dinners, our favorite meals were tabbouleh bowls (tabbouleh, chickpeas, grilled zucchini), burgers (made with sweet potato, walnuts, and black beans), pastas (bolognese and eggplant), baked sweet potato bars, shepherd's pie (sub lentils and mushrooms in for beef), and chili nachos. Breakfasts were a lot of smoothies/smoothie bowls. Lunches leftovers and salads. We're not big snackers. I did miss having cream in my coffee for sure. Having to make our own condiments and dressings was the hardest part, for sure. That and remembering to soak and cook beans ahead of time got a little tedious. I thought it would be less expensive overall, but it wasn't! We did decide to be more plant-based going forward so I try to make all our breakfasts vegan now, plus 1-2 dinners a week vegan or vegetarian.

Sara and Solo, honey is not considered vegan because it's extraction is based on the bees exploration. Veganism relies on the fact that animals are free not only from death, but also from exploration (like caging, hormones so the production gets larger, cruelty with calves, and so many others for milk, eggs, honey, even silk!). But I'm so happy that you were willing to try that with your family! That's a really nice iniciative. God bless you all, love your family!

Hummus instead of ranch. Tahini mixed with some water makes a great sauce. You have a good blender so you can make every vegan milk/drink possible. Cashews, water and some lemon juice makes sour cream.

Honey bees are not the same as wild native bees. They out compete native bees for food and aren't as effective at pollinating because they're so efficient at making honey. They also spread disease to the wild bees. The best way to help the bees is through conservation ☺️

My kids love diced potatoes and onions in pressure cooker for 12 minutes. With just about 1/4 cup water since potatoes and onions have water in them . Put salt and pepper , garlic powder and ranch powder on them toss cook for the 12 minutes. My kids will eat that with meal or as meal itself or snack. Season it to your taste. But for about three to five pounds I put about two packages of ranch on them. Great with every meal.

This is in no way a negative comment but I think this video definitely showed that any type of specific “diet” or way of eating can be unhealthy as well. Many of the vegan snacks are very high in sugar. I have found taking different recipes from vegan, vegetarian and meat are what work best for me. It’s also so great that each person has the ability to choose what they do and don’t eat in our country :)

Can you, or do you plan on doing a follow up video? I'm curious on everyone's overall thoughts, but especially Judah and Lukas. I know you had snippets of some of their thoughts throughout, but would you do it again? What was a favorite? Least favorite? Did anyone "cheat"? How did your little ones do? Did you find it more/less expensive? ('healthy' food seems so much more expensive!) Did you feel better/worse? I don't think I could ever completely cut meat out, but the idea is so intriguing.

I am vegetarian and eat dairy on rare occasions. Since cutting out meat, my immune system has drastically improved. When I eat dairy, my stomach rejects it and when I stop (hopefully permanently now), my skin clears up practically over night. I had a lot of immune and stomach issues growing up- I wish my parents had the knowledge I do now to consider cutting this stuff out. It has made such an improvement on my life. People are so used to these foods that they don't consider that it could be causing problems that they try and solve with medication. It gets easier. I wish my family had made this change. Good luck!

I would really recommend using hard tofu as substitute for meat. You can chop it up and marinade it just like with meat and fry it. Tofu doesn't taste much on it's own which is good cause that means you can flavour it anyway you like and you can basically substitute it for meat in any dish. It's like a sponge so it'll suck up all the flavours!

I always have to laugh whenever someone tells me, "go vegan!". I did it for a month and my hair started to fall out. I ate beans (black, pinto, chick pea, etc along with shrimp). Things I observed was a lot of animal protein was replaced with...sugar! I asked my vegan friends if they noticed that too. They admitted that they do eat a lot of sugar. Take away is, eat in moderation.

    • @juni_pearl_9591

Melissa Myers Exactly. Animal products have so many micronutrients that simply are either not in plant foods or not found in any significant quantity. It is difficult to truly replicate them with plants, which is why things start to go wrong...like hair falling out, etc. And yes, so many vegans end up with a sugar overload.
