This was on an early Greatest Hits compilation CD that I've had for years in the car. This is my first time watching him play the piece....pure bliss.💖
I saw (and more importantly heard) him play many years ago with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. They are world class musicians and while the played wonderfully, he played perfectly and while their faces were scrunched with intense scowls of concentration and sweat was dripping down their brows, he had a joyful smile on his face and was making a point of making eye contact with various members of the audience. He made it look effortless.
I remember when I first heard yoyo ma playing the cello when I was about 4 years old. I was in awe. I officially picked up the cello about 4 years ago. Hour after hour I would practice so I could play such beautiful things like this. Now I am principle cellist in a symphony at age 14 and I have to thank yo-yo ma for inspiring me to even want to play cello. ❤️❤️❤️ Edit: I didn’t think I’d be returning to this comment, but I am so glad I did! Thank you all for the kind words! I can now add onto this story of mine! Now, I am 16 and I am still in love with the cello and it’s sound. I’ve continued my work as a musician and have even come across opportunities to travel and perform, as well as possibly record for colleagues albums and projects. I couldn’t have made it this far if it weren’t for Yo-Yo Ma’s incredible influence on my younger self. Maybe I’ll return to this comment in the future, but nonetheless, I will always have this wonderful music in my heart. ♥️ Edit #2! I am 17 now, will be turning 18 in the coming months. I have gotten the chance to be apart of 2 pit orchestras for professional musicals and am principal cellist for my ensemble. I’ve also traveled a bunch more and have performed in various competitions, including one in Disneyland, haha!! My high school has been expanding their music system, and now I am resident cellist for our school quartet! We go and perform to inspire younger people to continue playing instruments. I am also going to send off college applications by November 30, but I won’t be studying music 😭 though it is a passion of mine, I have other passions I want to pursue further. However, I do plan to audition for the symphony orchestra of whatever college I attend! And after that, I want to be in a community orchestra because music is so important to me. I wouldn’t be the same person if it weren’t for cello. Thank you all once again for the kind words, they’ve meant a lot to me each time I got one!!! I will probably return again!!! Edit #3 (October 2024) From my last update a lot has happened. I was apart of another musical, won a national music award, traveled a lot for music and symphonies, and got into my dream university (Go UC Berkeley). I am a sophomore in college now! While I am not majoring in music and performance, I still play the cello every day! I learn new repertoire all the time still and continue to look up to Yo-Yo Ma. I had the amazing opportunity to see him LIVE IN CONCERT a few months ago!!! I had orchestra seats and I just cried the entire performance. What a full circle moment it was to see him, the person that inspired me to be a musician in the first place. So grateful for that opportunity! I am planning to join the symphony here in some time. Life is beautiful!
On another note, there is a piano prodigy about 9 years old in Russia named Elisey Myicen. Amazing. (I've probably spelled his name wrong but you will find him.)
Yo-Yo Ma is such an amazing artist. I don't think I've heard anyone else that plays with such passion and beauty. The way he plays is almost magical....
Absolutely gorgeous, yo-yo ma is the reason why I started cello, but each time I hear him play Bach I know I've got so much more work to put into it haha. Thank you
His posture seems so relaxed but also profesional at the same time, he has fun playing the cello and really enjoys the instiment, it shows in his face and his playing. A legend indeed.
Je suis impressionné par l'économie de ses mouvements. Pas un seul geste superflu. Ses changements de corde sont d'une perfection difficile à égaler. Merci.
Loved the way How YYM contrasted the vibrant Major with the more legato Minor, even though not playing with the original bowing and instrument, he gets the right spirit, a true master!
The lovely snippet was recorded in Mechanics Hall in Worcester Massachusetts. It is YYM's favorite recording venue. IMHO it is among the finest concert halls for acoustic perfection in the world. Does this mean that YYM is re-recording the Bach Cello Suites there???
Both Ma and Maisky are the reasons I began my cello journey. They’re graceful, energetic, and always full of emotion when playing; and that is what I aspire to display when playing.
Played this piece on electric bass for my college audition. I'm not really a classical guy but this has become one of my favorite pieces of music of all time
This piece was an option for my phone alarm sound and has woken me up so many mornings for years now. It is unsettling to listen to 😬😭😳 I am trying to reverse the damage by listening to it.😂
I dont really know how to play cello or any other instrument but i keep on listening to sir yo yo ma because it feels like his cello is alive. Like the cello is a part of his body.
I’ve played violin for around 7-8 years now, and I’m just starting to learn cello because I watched one of his videos around a year ago. I must say you are an inspiration to me sir
I am brand new to the cello, like 2 weeks ago. I am learning how to hold it and everything I have read and heard says he's not following conventions... then I hear him play and figure that sometimes conventions are wrong, and you need to do it the way it feels most comfortable for you. Even if I never master the cello, I want to get to the feeling of comfort, relaxation, and joy he is showing playing his music.
Welcome to the world of cello playing! I’ve been paying for 4 years now, I’m now playing Bach and currently learning this piece just for funsies. I hope you’ll go far with your cello! 💗

This is a really solid recording! (Of course Mr. Ma does fantastic as well) you can hear all the warmth in the bottom here, which I feel is missing in a lot of the albums Yo-Yo Ma has done of Bach’s works.
I've started playing the viola about eight months ago and my teacher let me choose one of the "easier" pieces from from cello suite to play next. Absolutamente perfeito ! Yo-Yo Ma representa a evolução técnica do violoncelo.
