3D CNC carved plaque on Shapeoko3 XL in Walnut

- I was commissioned to do this plaque, and given free reign over the design. I got the 3D file of the wreath and star from Vectric Design and Make, and the rest was done in vCarve Pro.
I didn’t even realize I needed one of those machines until I ran across your videos. That’s pretty work.
Great job! When gluing up multi piece panels you should consider alternating the growth rings of each part. We sometimes refer to this as “smiles and frowns” and can be seen on the end grain of each piece of wood. Looking at the panel you show here it is clear you did not alternate the pieces. When the part takes on various amounts of moisture it will bow. If all of your parts are uniform in grain direction the bow will be significant. If you alternate the growth ring direction every other piece the individual part bow will cancel each other out keeping the panel flatter over time. I would guess this is a plain sawn cut board based on the face grain pattern. Plain sawn material from my experience tends to warp the most over time FYI. Thanks for posting the video....

WOW!!! Skip to the end. Check out that finish. It looked so much better raw than stained, but you have to protect the wood. I love the mat finish of the raw wood after the milling. It looks AMAZING. The finish is awesome.

Oh man I feel special. Thanks for watching my video. That isn't actually a clamping jig. It's just my old wasteboard I use to keep the glue off the table. The clamps aren't attached. The plaque was a success, and thanks for having the 3D model I needed.

I know a lot of people from Hughes. I was in region 6 my whole career. I just retired in August with 20 years. I enjoyed the work, but it was time to move on.

I know this is now an older video for you but wow, what an amazing bit of work! Have you done a tutorial video on setting up a 3d carve from the toolpaths side of things? Your videos are down to earth and great for us normal guys to actually learn something!
There isn’t much to show with vetric design. You get a grey scale 3D image. Import into vcarve And select the bits. Vcarve generates the tool paths and roughing, finish passes even automatically recommends bits based on your library.

I’m just starting out, but I’m blown away by this stuff.
I’m curious, why didn’t you use dowels to join the pieces?
for something small like this is not that necessary because you dont need to do much plaining to get it level. but if your new and rather do dowels to get a perfect line up you can its just a little bit of extra work but at the same time not really because you need to plain. i would definitely dowels would be easier for a beginner. but usually are used for tables etc.

How long and how much for 18x18x1 FBI seal, slightly modified to say DIVISION OF INVESTIGATION instead of FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION on the bottom lettering of the seal. The large shops want way too much and five weeks to deliver. This was very impressive to see.
Still liking this! I'm still looking for someone to help me get this 18 inch seal, and have the file(s) with the exception of the tool path. I have 3DS, DXF, IGS, OBJ, or STL from a 3D Studio Max 2021 file that I modified recently.

Love the videos!! My XXL is on the way. Do you have to use V-carve to do 3D cutouts? If I understand correctly, Carbide Create does 2.5d but not 3D. Still trying to learn all of this stuff.

Don't feel bad it took me almost 8 months before I tried anything 3d. I have found with the 3d stuff the design and modeling is the part that is frustrating. This project was the first finished 3d cut I did for someone that wasn't just practice on scrap. Even with all the 3d capabilities of VCarve, and the machine I find that I use mine mostly for V Carving, and pocket carving 2.5d stuff. Not that I don't want to do 3d stuff I just find more of a profit to time ratio doing other things. People around my area don't like to pay you for your time. It's like they think everything should cost $20.00.

I think if I remember correctly this project took 5 tool changes.

Very nice job! It really came out great. I notice you run the blank off-cuts through your planer right behind the plaque blank. Does that help eliminate any potential snipe on the blank?

Hello, i'm new to cnc, wanted to ask 1. what cad, cam and controller software did you use for this 3d carving with shapeoko and 2. If i get online stl file of 3d decorative carvings can i cut them with shapeoko, if yes what cam and controller should i consider ?
did you have to load the file from Vectric Design into VCarve and then export it to Gcode to run on you Shapeoko? Nice work.
Yes the 3d model. The rest of it I designed myself and created the toolpath Gcode
Have you experienced any calibration issues with your SO3? I have an issue where my parts in CC are coming out about 1/8” short, both along the x and y axis.
D Gramsz I was surprised when I got mine set up and going it was spot on. Never had to adjust anything as far as calibration goes
Did you test your stepper count.
There are videos on here as to check to make sure you steppers are moving the correct amount

Hi thank you so much for great video now I am really interested in this CNC machine but I'm going to be using insulation foam (styrofoam) material for example pink one which is available at any Home Depot in different thicknesses or blue, is this machine capable of doing 3D carving using insulation foam as a material instead of wood or aluminum or plastic did you ever try it or maybe somebody else can answer my question my interest is more in artistic design for example making Egyptian hieroglyphics cut in form which is very light material and painting using few different colors it looks amazing and it's very light in weight once again thanks for the video and I'm looking up for the answer if it's possible

Yes, you can CNC mill foam for your Stargate build. You might have to experiment with different spindle speeds and feed rates depending on the density of the foam. They sell denser 250 weight extruded polystyrene for under heated concrete driveways. It's usually 2 or 2.5" thick as well.

matt roberts they are just the bar clamps from harbor freight. I used 4 to clamp it up. The board underneath is just an old wasteboard repurposed to keep the glue off my bench.

In total about 8 hours
Do we have to change some setting when we change bits while carving in wood, and can we change bits in mid of carving, if yes then what precautions we should take. reply as soon as possible.
The bits are changed when you run each toolpath. No settings other than the spindle/router RPM need to be changed, and that is only if it needs to be depending on the bit. You can't or shouldn't change bits in the middle of carving a single toolpath.

How to choose bits for carving, e.g. 0.5mm or 0.3mm etc,
is any settings are there which tells cnc machine that which diameter of bits are used,
Because area of carving in each movement depends upon diameter of bits,
Which section of cnc deals with bits diameter, eg. CAD or CAM or Mach3 or any other.

@@Durgeshkr00 The simplest way I know to answer this is like this. All settings and bit choices are made in your Design "CAD" program. All the CAM or control software ie: Mach3 Carbide motion does is send the code to the machine and zero out the machine when you tell it to. What was the finished size? What was the selling price? Do you figure it up as time and material?
The finished size was 15". The thickness was 1". This was done as a favor for my boss, so I didn't charge much. I basically just charged for materials, but if I were charging full price it would have to be at least $100, and I'm sure some people say that would still be too low.

What made you choose vcarve pro vs something like Fusion 360? I am thinking about getting a machine and vcare is expensive. Is it worth it? Thanks for your help in advance.
I picked it because it's ease of use, and features. It is a pretty easy program to learn even for someone who has no CAD experience. I do agree it's expensive, but it's worth it in my opinion. Fusion 360 was just way to complicated for my taste, and is for most people. If you don't have much to spend, and don't mind spending a lot of time learning then 360 may work for you. I tried a couple other little free programs like Carbide create, and Easel, just didn't like what they offered, very limited. They are free though, so it never hurts to try any of them. After you try them download a free trial of VCarve, and prepared to be amazed.

In addition to not having a biscuit joiner, given the depth of cut for the letters, he would have had to have been awfully careful about where he placed the biscuits! I doubt an exposed biscuit would have improved the look of the plaque.
@@DKWalser probably not. In hind sight if I did this again I would not have gone as deep with the letters.
@@DKWalser They could have placed the biscuits in the lower section of the joinery. It just makes for a stronger edge to edge connection. It still turned out great!

I haven’t seen anyone use cnc routers to carve designs in stone but with a bit made for stone and a low carving speed I don’t see why it would not be possible. Anyone has an opinion about using my cnc to carve stone?
I think the problem with doing stone will fall on the speed of the router. I say give it a whirl and see what happens. As long as you dont put too much pressure on the machine the worst case is you ruin a bit.

Thanks. The roughing pass was done with a .125 endmill, and it is 12x12x1.
How long for this carving?
Looks great. if you don't mind saying, what would the cost of this item to the buyer? Being that it took roughly 8hrs.
Henry Vaughn of I were selling this to an unknown customer that wasn't getting the friend discount I would probably have charged around $175 but that's just me. Everyone has to price what they think their work is worth to them.
I agree, was just curious. Hopefully, by this Christmas I am buying a Camaster Stinger I or II, since I retire in 5yrs. They are only 2 1/2hrs from me (Smoky Mountains) and I am planning more on a production model rather than a Hobby type. Thanks for your videos. It's hard to find any that go into detail rather than, "here, watch this", videos.

Is all the bits you used to do this piece included in the starter bit kit you mentioned in one of your other videos.
No not all. In this I used a .25 flat endmill for the large area clearence, .0625 flat endmill for the cleanup in the wording areas, .125 flat endmill for the roughing pass on the 3d, and a .0625 tapered conical for the finish on the 3d. I also used a long 1.25" .125 endmill for the cutout. So basically to answer your question the only bit from that set was the .25 endmill and the .0625 conical.
How did you gcode middle part of seal that uses ball nose ??
In vcarve pro when you do 3d it has a roughing pass and a finish pass. I just used the flat endmill for rough and the ball conical for finish.
Big fan of your work. I understand how you you cut it, I was wondering how you actually created a 3D gcode. VCarve only has sample codes.
@@s1krider855 I think you may be mistaken. With VCarve Pro it can do full 3d. It is not as in depth as Aspire, but it still does 3D. I simply bought and imported a model, made my toolpath's and it created the GCode for it. Unless I'm not understanding your question it's pretty easy with VCarve Pro. VCarve desktop may be another story, but I'm using pro.
