The computer farting/buzzing with written/leaking data to the sound card brought back some memories.
Exiting (or crashing) a program and having the last sample looping endlessly. I only hear that about once a year now when my ATI/legacy drivers crash hard enough to skip the BSOD.

I've installed windows 1.0, 2.03, 3.1, 95, and 98 on my phone. There is a port of dosbox for ios and android. for android, it is freebox (or dosbox turbo if you have money to burn) and for ios it is called iDOS 2 and it is $0.99
You can enter RESCAN on the DOSBox command line or hit Ctrl + F4 to reload the directory structure. No need to restart DOSBox every time. ;)
That setup is still faster, prettier, and way more friendly than most BSD or Linux setups.
When you said you were using a Windows 3.11 CD, I realized I have my own CD and decided to do exactly everything you did (down to the mouse being broken). Did this because I realized the Windows install I used to set up some old games that would only run on Win3.1 broke after a reinstall.

(26:25) I believe you can go faster in _SkiFree_ with the 'f' key (toggles like Caps lock); I didn't know about the 'f' key back then. Tried different ways of evading the abominable snow man, including seeing how far up the slope the game would let me climb. Some times I could trick him to run the wrong way (don't remember how), but then he'd come back and eat me regardless. There's no escaping the abominable snow man.

You really need to do a video on how to get a modern drive working in a DOS setup. I've been trying for days with no success. It seems everyone knows how to do it, but never stops to explain how.
To be fair, I actually want to see ME installed in DOSBox. Never had luck with anything past Win95.

I tried DosBox in a Nokia C6, it kept crashing.
Kārlis Gustavs Ārītis s60v3 and beyond were horrific for hacks like these man, all in the name of security.
DOSbox seems to be a bit weird about detecting changes to the file directories while in operation. It typically doesn't notice them until you restart the program, or as you demonstrated, make some direct change to the files through DOSbox itself. Which is weird, but there it is. At least, that's been my experience with the "dir" command in DOSbox itself, outside of the Win3.11.

I'd like to see a more in-depth video about installing MS-DOS and an older operating system (Win 3.11) on a newer PC that already has an operating system and DOSBox. Kris Asick of *Pixelmusement* uses it as part of his "Shovelware Diggers" series, but I never get to learn about what's going on, the nitty-gritty how-to details. How does it run? What can and can't the older operating system do from DOSBox?
Hey, Druaga, I discovered something that may be useful to you; if you want to install Win 3.11 on DOSBox 0.74 and have the mouse working, you just need to perform two extra steps.
1. Copy MOUSE .COM into your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory for DOSBox
2. Add "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MOUSE .COM" (without the space; it's just to keep the filename from showing up as a hyperlink) to your autoexec.bat file.
Next time you start WIndows 3.11, the mouse will work. A little fast, but you can just adjust that in the Mouse control panel.

You have to restart DOSBox for the files to correctly update, which sucks.
I think there's a key combo to refresh the file structure, but I don't know which one.

How did you get the disks? My dad has an MSN Subscrpition so he as access to some windows versions, i think it does have windows 3.11. Do you own the disks and just made images of them?

i have dosbox 0.74 on ubuntu and it works just fine, none of the audio issues u had
It's crazy to me that since I migrated to Linux last year, I've been able to run all my Windows apps through Wine with better compatibility than I used to have running it on Windows itself, and my entire "Windows" drive directory only occupies 60 MB. (Proudly sent from Xubuntu 16.04) xDDD

PixelSpark DOSBox actually ignores new files until ctrl+F4 is pressed, plus F5 doesn't work in 3.11 file explorer.

I followed this tutorial and accidentaly installed this on a DS Lite. Instructions not clear.
I did this last year. I havent updated dosbox ever (I have 0.74) and now it crashes when I open wfw311. Even reinstalling it 5 times didn't work.

It seems Standard Mode (win /s) works fine while 386 Mode (win) doesn't. I have no clue why.

TumbleGamer If I understand what you're asking correctly, then the Z drive is a virtual drive running from RAM, you can't install anything to it, it is only there for DOSBox to provide its initial working environment.

He didn't, he mounted a virtual C drive on a physical Z: drive.
I admit that he made this extremely confusing, but to sum it up:
The first Z: drive is virtual, it doesn't really exist, this Z: drive is created inside RAM every time you start DOSBox.
He then mounted a virtual C drive on a physical RAID array mounted at Z:
This virtual C drive exists inside a folder called Win311, it is to this virtual drive you see him copy files to.
I hope that makes sense, but I can see where the confusion exists.
