The Submariner debuted without a date mechanism on the dial in the 1950s. As a professional diver’s watch, the date wasn’t a necessity at the time. However, as the Submariner’s popularity among collectors grew, Rolex finally decided to add a date mechanism to the dial via reference 1680 in the late 1960s.
The Submariner Date reigned supreme for the next several decades until the “No Date” model was resurrected in 1990 alongside reference 14060. This edition was similar in design to the popular 16610, featuring an aluminum bezel, lumed plots in white gold surrounds, and a high-beat movement.
2009/2010 marked a transition within the Submariner series from aluminum bezels to those fitted with ceramic inserts. This generation also received a redesigned case with a slightly broader appearance on the wrist and a newer bracelet. Even though it keeps the same 40mm diameter as its 5-digit predecessor, the first generation of 6-digit Subs appear larger on the wrist. The No Date model made its ceramic debut in 2012 with reference 114060, the first No Date Submariner to ever feature a Ceramic bezel.
Powering the Submariner 114060 is the calibre 3130, the dateless cousin of the iconic calibre 3135 Perpetual movement. Other than omitting the date, the calibre 3130 operates like the calibre 3135, featuring a 48-hour power reserve, self-winding, and accuracy up to -2/+2 seconds per day.
That brings us to September of 2020 and the release of the new generation of Submariner wristwatches. The 40mm series was discontinued completely, making way for the current 41mm lineup. Also, the calibers 3135 and 3130 were retired from the Submariner portfolio in favor of the newer 3235 and 3230 movements.
Differences:
Even though reference 124060 received an extra millimeter in diameter, it wears much like its predecessor reference 114060. The rounded lugs seen on the 114060 Submariner are sleeker and more slimmed down on the 41mm edition.
With that in mind, the lug width was increased from 20mm to 21mm to match the larger case size. With the slightly wider bracelet came a wider clasp to match. To some, this increase might seem nominal, but it adds to the ref 124060’s overall size and weight.
As we already mentioned, the movement received a significant upgrade from calibre 3130 to calibre 3230. Integrated into the newer movement is Rolex’s Chronergy escapement, which features a skeletonized structure for a more efficient reading. The calibre 3230 also includes a longer power reserve of 70-hours, nearly doubling that of its predecessor at 48 hours.
Looking at the dial, the wording below the 6-hour marker is the easiest way to tell the two No Date Submariners apart. The signature on ref. 114060 reads “SWISS MADE.” Ref. 124060 has the exact wording but with a small Rolex coronet between the two words.
Similarities:
Other than the case size and the movement, references 114060 and 124060 are very similar in design. Both watches utilize the same Oystersteel finish, a stainless steel metal belonging to the 904L steel family. Compared to other stainless steel metals on the market, Oystersteel is much more resistant to corrosion. References 114060 and 124060 also feature the same black dial and bezel pairing, an iconic duo that dates to the very first Submariner from the early 1950s.
Both watches feature Chromalight plots on the dial, Rolex’s latest luminous material. During the day, Chromalight remains stark white. However, it emits a stunning blue glow in dark environments that can last up to 8 continuous hours. The scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is a fixture on both references, as is the Submariner’s standard 300-meter water-resistance.
The bracelet on both references is similar, featuring solid links and Rolex’s innovative Oysterlock Glidelock clasp. With the Glidelock extension system, the wearer can adjust the bracelet’s length in 2mm increments up to 20mm total.
When deciding between these two Submariners, it’s important to consider each watch’s size and weight. While they both appear the same with a similar steel finish and black dial and bezel, one No Date might accommodate your wrist better than the other. - Навчання та стиль

Two other obvious differences:
- The hour hand is larger and better in proportion.
- The new version has an anti reflective coating giving the dail a realy nice deep black look
@Dani6659 “Both Watchuseek and RolexForum members are in agreement that there is no AR coating on the 114060. The only AR coating is under the cyclops, not the entire inside of the sapphire crystal. Every single thread discussing it was quoting aBlogtoWatch and owners chime in that it does not have AR coating.”
@@M1ch31 I owned both for about four days. The new one is waaayyyy less reflective in the crystal. It was the one thing I had not heard in advance and caught me by surprise.

I own the 114060 and had an opportunity to upgrade to the 124060. I passed. The wider bracelet with a wider buckle made the watch wear differently and not to my liking. Also the fact that the new bracelet is now 21mm instead of 20mm, makes it more difficult to find straps for when I feel like changing the look and feel of the watch.

One thing no reviewer seems to have mentioned is how much more comfortable and balanced the new 41mm watch feels on the wrist compared to the 40mm. The reason is because the bracelet is 1mm wider and the clasp is also wider and bigger which stops the unbalanced "top heavy" feel of the 40mm that I found would "tilt" on the wrist due to the wide maxi case and very narrow, small clasp.

114060 has perfect lugs... I've never been in public and hear a person say, I love your watch but your lugs are too big 😂

My brother just bought 124060 i have tried it on i can say the claps is big and the bracelet is wider and the movement you can hear the rotor move i have done some research on this and its completely normal so me personally 114060 is the 👑.

Not with the new 3235 movement. The 3135 had a crown turn clockwise to advance the time. The 3235 is counter-clockwise to advance.

@@BeatPoet67 Yes, if you have been in the industry you can tell something is proportions are right and something that is out of place. The 41mm is one ugly size. Rolex, learn from Omega, look at how well they can tastefully design a 42mm or even a Seiko with their SKX.
Whilst it’s true that the outgoing versions were marketed as 40mm they were slightly larger. With the new 41mm models it’s actually the opposite, they measures slightly under. I would have expected a specialist channel to mention this. I have both 116610 and just recently 126610 I measure only 0.3/0.4mm between them. The 126610 actually wears smaller in my mind, more akin to the 16610 from pre 2010. To refer to their 1mm size difference is misleading at best. The only slight neg for me with the 126610 is the clasp which seems much wider to the eye. Taper is still nice from 21-17mm but clasp takes a bit of getting used to.

Strongly dislike the new clasp. A little longer and 1mm thicker that the previous, which is the last thing the clasp on the 114060 needed. It's already long and sizable. For this reason alone, the 12 series is out of the running for me.

I have owned them all and now the SD41 (126610LN). It is the most perfect a modern Sub can get. It addressed every issue I didnt care for in my LVc Hulk. The new Sub41 has a larger dial and hands giving it the best dial to bezel ratio. The fatter hour hand looks more in proportion and hold more lume. The Sub 41 and SD43 have the same size dial and hands yet the Sub now gives better better dial real estate in a smaller easier to wear watch.. The sum of all the changes to the Sub 41 add up to a hell of a difference to the previous blocky super case. The Sub41 is the modern 5 digit Sub with significantly better build quality and materials. Unfortunately it will be very, very popular for years and make it a unicorn. Its going to stay a "rock star" a long time. Look at it this way, The Submariner is significantly a more important watch model and larger icon than the Daytona. Factor in these are the biggest and all good changes the Sub has ever seen since going to ceramic. The Sub41 is a very significant piece now. I dont ever see it being less than a $15.5k and up model for maybe ever.

That is a classic sub owner's comment lol. "no Date" means that they acknowledge that isn't the official name, but we know what no date means.

actual diameter is NOT the same as predecesor... 114060 is 40mm, previous gens are 39 and 38mm..... 124060 is NOT 41mm... those "mm" are all "marketing dia" not true dia
Actual diameter on the 41mm is 40.5 mm and the 40 mm is 40.2 mm
The 114060 best represent what a submariner should look like.. the new 41mm has better proportions with an upgraded movement but it just looks like a fat woman with skinny legs to me..

The new 124 series is absolutely huge in real life. The clasp and bracelet is so massive. Rolex is loosing their touch to nail the size. The 114 series is absolutely perfect in every way.
What an over exaggeration! The case is 0.3 of a mm thicker on the 12 series, the bracelet is 1mm wider between the lugs and the clasp width is less than 1mm wider than the old model.

The 114 was huge too! The maxi case and lugs were enormous compared to its predecessor, the 14060M.

@@Thankyou_3 the 14060 shared the proportions from the 5513, a design which was perfect enough to have only minor changes spanning decades. We can agree to disagree but in my opinion the 14060m was the last of the true submariners. The 114060 was the start of “bigger is better” bling Rolex monstrosity. The 124060 just continues what the 114060 started.

There is no Rolex Submariner no date, the original Submariner had no date, its the Submariner or the Submariner date.
Original Submariner 1953 no date, first Submariner with date 1969.
The new one looks a lot better. The proportions of the lugs and band on the outgoing model is goofy.
