- The presence of functional mammary glands is characteristic feature of all female mammals. These are modified oil glands.
- they are paired structure of breast that contains: glandular tissue and variable amount of fats( amount of fat in breast may vary among females)
- glandular tissue in each mammary glands contain 15-20 mammary lobe.
- the mammary lobes contain cluster of cells called alveoli.
- the cells of alveoli secret milk.
-the milk is stored in the cavity of alveoli.
-the alveoli open into the mammary tubules.
- the tubules of each lobe join to form a mammary duct.
- several mammary ducts join to form a wider mammary ampulla.
- the mammary ampulla is connected to a lactiferous duct through which milk is sucked out.
Hormone responsible for development of mammary glands & milk formation- PROLACTIN
Hormone responsible for the ejection of milk- OXYTOCIN
