"Do-able to maintain" is an excellent goal. Set yourself up for future you to enjoy the chateau, not be a slave to it. Oddly, I like the random gate to know where!

Plant some flowering shrubs around the gate to nowhere! Make a statement garden piece of it!

CLIMBING ROSES OR CLEMATIS WOULD BE PRETTY , BUT OF COURSE SOME ADDITIONAL MAINTENCE ON OCCASION WOULD BE NEEDED. EVERYTHING ADDED
      NEEDS NURTURING.

Your back garden is looking fantastic. I think the old gate being an original to the château, should be refinished, given a place of prominence with a bench in front of it where you can sit and enjoy the quiet magic of the place ❤

Wow! Yard looks so tidy and green ! Step by step - you are getting it done. Personally I’d remove vines from the wall. Repurpose the gate to a different part of garden and use as a trellis for climbing roses 🌹

Borrowing that machine from Billy was a stroke of genius. It has really made a big difference. I know that you fixed it for him so it’s great he let you take home now that he won’t be using it for a while. Agree with others that the gate could definitely be repurposed for climbing roses or another trellising plant. Any luck with unplugging the drain? Hopefully you can rid yourself of those water rats.

I agree Phil, it is satisfying to cut whatever you have to make it neat. Looks fantastic! I'm glad you have the pub as part of your social life..we all need that, especially living alone. I'm older, but I still look after my big garden, not even close to the size of yours, but it's big enough and I hold tea parties regularly for friends...keeps me alive...the simpler things, nothing wrong with that at all.

Great job, Phil! The back garden is looking wonderful and, as you noted, it is more accessible for mowing in the future. Such a productive and satisfying day of work!
Can certainly relate to the mixed feelings you have as you clear away some structures and enclosures that you worked hard to put up for specific enjoyable uses in the past. (We are currently dealing with similar decisions and chores as we tidy up our property. Some neat memories of large vegetable gardens and much loved animals come to mind while we take down gates, roll up fences and dismantle shelters and hutches fallen into disuse over time. Some bittersweet emotions for sure... but then a real sense of accomplishment, as well.)
We are rejoicing with you as you tackle the work there with energy and enthusiasm realizing that the yard and lawn maintenance and upkeep will be much simplified by your ongoing efforts. Thank you, Phil, for sharing with us your vision for the chateau grounds and the steps you are taking to reach your goals. I, for one, am challenged and inspired by your ambitious springtime exploits)

That looks great Phil! This way you can mow regularly and it will look so nice! I love that old gate, it’s beautiful and part of the chateau’s history, perhaps when you move it instead of storing it find a perfect location to place it and grow a climbing rose on it. There are so many wonderful climbing roses.
