As I mention in the annotation, twisting that gray ring on the barrel adjusts the zoom of this camera. The twist-zoom feature is not impeded by this lens modification. On the screen side, the camera also has a fine adjustment for the focus (for when focus is set to manual). These two features are what make the addition of a macro lens possible, because the zoom is really just an adjustment for the internal lenses' focal point distance- it just moves the outer most lens in and out.

What follows are the dimensions for the magnification glasses used in the demonstration. All were biconvex, and I didn't go through the trouble to approximate their radius of curvature values. let t = lens thickness (how fat), and let w = diameter of lens circle (how wide). My grading scale was simply based on a visual inspection of glass quality; the correlation between higher quality and lens thickness was mostly incidental:
Cheap: t=6mm; w=90mm
Medium: t=11mm; w=75mm
High: t=18mm; w=65mm
Note: The lens setup in my camera uses an aspherical lens to reduce aberration. That is, (at least one) lens is shaped in a special curve that is not quite a sphere to reduce those stray, scattered light beams that cause spherical aberration. Typical focal range is between 0.3m and infinity. The numbers on the barrel are 11-27.5, but I don't know what that means. Sorry to make this all so complicated, but I told you that optics was hard as hell.

The PVC was cut to the smallest possible size that would still prevent the lenses from contacting one another. Spherical aberration is quite apparent on the edges with this setup (notice the flower pot at around 8:20), and so I would posit that the lens I am using has a smaller spherical diameter (curvature) to its face than it should have (I'm suggesting that the lens should be made out of a bigger sphere, not that it should just be bigger in size). Those smaller but "fat" looking lenses really bend the light quickly, which makes it seem as though they have a powerful magnification, but this is not necessarily the case. What you may perceive as powerful lens could just be a lens with a close focal point. I suppose that what makes a lens "powerful," ultimately, is the amount of light that it can capture and focus; in other words, its size. My approach here was to use an extremely close focal point, but I think that I would like to move it back some. Please keep in mind that this was done on the fly, without research, without buying anything, and without making any calculations or preparations at all.

The shots at the end are my first tries ever, so they are incredibly unpolished. But this fact should give a fair indication of just how much better this could work with a little practice, and perhaps with a better shaped lens. Nevertheless, this mod costs nothing- especially relative to those pricey add-on lenses, which (reduced aberration aside) would offer little improvement for my purposes. - Навчання та стиль
I know this video is old, but I hope if you do see this comment you get some interest out of it. I work in manufacturing, and I put together the nessecary parts to create little devices that doctors put in people's brains so they don't die of aneurysms. I get to sit down for 10 hours a day and look down a microscope. It only goes up to 40x magnification, but it's still utterly fascinating. I work in a clean room, so don't tell anybody, but I've sneaked everything from hair to skin to boogers onto my build plate (don't worry, I sanitized and rinsed it thoroughly). I spent nearly two hours earning my paycheck diligently by playing with my hair and eyelashes, and simply catalogueing information about them to see later. I even pulled out what I think was a nerve cell (it hurt a LOT) and got a decent look at it.
I hope you play with magnification and macro film more. It's a beautiful and fascinating world. Physics changes so much on the small scale... and the big scale, to be fair.
Just yesterday I got to view a sample I prepared under an electron microscope, magnification is awesome.

I think one of the coolest shots was the bee near the end; everyone knows the approximate size of a bee. That really helps to get a sense of the scale. Even so it was a really neat shot regardless. Bravo!

I tried this last night and actually found a really good combination.
I pulled the lens out of my cheap phone vr headset, which has fairly decent Lens material, and has a little tube attached to it already.
Then i took a magnifying glass and put that to the open end of the magnifying glass, and omg that really brought out the detail in the macro lens. It allowed much better depth of feild focus compared to ur average smartphone macro lens.

Awesome video. I've been doing some similar testing with my cell phone(lg v10) which has a very nice camera. Adding a "macro" lens to get some really close up shots of the life inside my terrarium. fascinating stuff. I have a Pentax k01...I'm curious if this would work on that camera as well...going to have to try it out. thank you for the inspiration.

Very nice of you. As a rural recluse, it's become somewhat rare for me to encounter people who have been well-educated. Now, whenever I do, I'll often ask them which of the courses they've experienced was the toughest. As she was removing an embedded object from me, an ophthalmologist once responded to the question (without hesitation): "Oh, optics!"
As much as I appreciate your comment, my own contribution as an educator has been somewhat sparse. I try to add a drop here and there, but mostly attention's demand around here is for novelty. People like two things in this genre: 1) tricks, and 2) a reaffirmation of their present beliefs. The only way to _really_ do the vital work, shameful as it is for me to admit it, is to do it so that they don't know it's happening; make the idea simple enough in its explanation, and they'll think they knew it the whole time.
Kudos to the uploaders who are more direct, more explicit, in their educational content. Around this genre, Matthias Wandel is supreme. But as he's happy to point out, nobody watches his optics videos! But maybe that's because it's too dry. Tell me, fellow science mind, what _is_ purple, really? The more we quantify it with explanatory rigor, the more we become detached from the ineffable sensation of seeing it feather-fade to nothing on a dark wall opposite the prism on a sunny day. Rays and waves and aberration and perspective, maybe, are just too much for us to understand. Or maybe, as they're only parts, they add up to much less than understanding. Sometimes I wonder, in spite of my lifelong obsession with it, whether I've come to understand anything about geometry at all. Tough subject is an understatement! Thanks ;)

I've been watching your videos for a good part of the day( Both channels). They're fascinating. The last one was the push stick center of mass. Excellent. I'm 81 and I don't get out in my shop much anymore but it's fun to keep learning. By the way, are you a mathematician, physicist are what? Your approach to everything is so scientific and informative.
I really appreciate the support. I do have a science background, but at present I'm not employed in those fields. I don't ever want another lab job! I think that it's called "macro" when a lens/sensor relationship is capable of reproduction ratios of at least 1:1. Also I think it's named relative to "micro"-photography which is necessarily smaller.

Also, you have some amazing camera skills. That lens you made also gives a cool effect towards the edges when zoomed out. Also, the depth of field, were you doing all of that, or was that partially a product of the lens's focal point?
It's possible to make an octagon out of pvc with a camera mount in the center. Doing so removes the small shakes from holding the camera.

Have you tried sticking a CD player lens to your phone camera? You can’t use your CD player any more but you do get a good microscope I just used sellotape. Thanks for your videos your are very inspiring.
Did you figure out a way to stabilise the lens? Maybe some rubber gaskets will absorb the vibrations

I think the idea behind the word Macro is about making really small items "look" really big.
Random note: On the assumption that you're working on a teleportation device in your spare time (aren't we all), I would recommend you not experiment with it in your "green house". Judging from the video, you appear to have insects present there... and we all know the juxtaposition of insects and teleportation does not end well.
The effects have been greatly exzzzzzzzaggerated.

The term "macrophotography" is definitely confusing. The best way to think about, at least traditionally, is how large the image of the object you are observing is projected on to your detector (e.g. CCD). When the lens you are using produces a ratio that is close to 1:1, the image projected of your object is essentially life size, and you are in the "macro" regime.
Did you have to get closer and closer as your lense got bigger? Your glue gun skills need some practice, lol Your DOF was great with that last lens. You just saved yourself a whole bunch of money. Way to go. Thats better than the filter set I bought, 1+ 10x and almost as good as my friends 2k $ Nikon macro lens. Where it really shows up is when you enlarge it later, how sharp it ends up. Good job.
I disagree, it was nowhere near a macro lens in quality. In magnification, mayhaps getting near 1:1, but magnification does not equate to quality, though this UA-camr seemed to use "quality" that way. Also, probably better off improving your macro with extension tubes than by adding lenses to the front, also a very cheap way to go.
Nonsense. I'm surprised you petty camera snobs didn't get here earlier. First, an extension tube would allow dust in and ruin the thing within the first hour, on top of its inconvenience. Second, the supplemental lens provides quick, cheap, and replaceable protection for high-risk, tight shots. Third, the "quality" (no matter how you parse the term semantically), is phenomenal after some tinkering: go watch the honeybee footage. You should seriously consider MY application- and not just your own- when generalizing about what's "better off."
And finally, I'm an expert with a hot-glue gun. sheesh.

Like I said it was comparable to the 2k lense, (we did a comparison during harvest w/ my mafnification filters) You can laugh all the way to the bank at the nay sayers. They have to justify spending 2k on a lense they only use once in a while. I want to make one

pocket83² Sorry champ, but an extension tube isn't camera snobbery, it is the precisely the poor man's macro, sometimes they can be found cheaper than your PVC pipe+lens solution. The quality is preserved because you aren't adding any new elements. Point 1 is nonsense, that camera is not sealed to begin with so an extension tube isn't going to be letting much more dust in. I've used extension tubes in dust storms out in the desert, they're fine, if you're really worried then just add a rubber gasket to it (pretty much all most "weather sealed" lenses do anyway) 2 is fair. I'm not talking about some imaginary ephemeral "quality." I mean that as opposed to an extension tube you're harming your sharpness (measure MTF), increasing chromatic aberrations (measure CA width in pixels), distortion (measure curvature the lens is imparting to straight lines), etc... another nice way to get a macro is to reverse a fairly wide angle lens, but with modern lenses that are focus by wire the loss of electronic connection makes it a no go. The protection aspect is also iffy though, but I suppose the extra space from the PVC makes it an overall win there. But hey, it's not like I can't do camera snobbery if you want, go buy yourself a Canon MP-E 65 you pleb, 1:1 to 5:1 magnification :P Come on dude, it's not like I even told you to get a "real" macro lens or something. Your results are not bad if we consider only the very center frame though. I wasn't trying to put down your attempt at macro, just to suggest something that does preserve more quality, but yeah, it does not add to front element protection, but your dust argument really is bollocks. Can even make bellows on the cheap if you want.

The units are millimeters!
They are "focal lengths", I think it means the distance between the lens' focal point to the camera's sensor, but since I'm not so good at optics either, here's a link to Wikipedia:

That doesn't seem right. The zoom only has a physical movement of around 4 mm, and the difference between those two numbers is 16.5. Thanks for helping though. I'll read some more about it later ;)
