Volantex 400mm Warbird RC Plane Tips after flying for a year

  • In this video I talk about my experiences with two Sport Cub 500s, a Spitfire, P40 and Me BF109 which are all Volantex 400mm warbird series radio control trainer planes. They have all been amazing if you want flying with no worries about crashing. They are proper little flyers that allow you to try more difficult modes as you improve, although 'Expert' mode is generally regarded as pretty much uncontrollable on such a small plane so effected by the wind. The other two modes though are great, useful, and easy to get to grips with. My three sons all flew the Sport Cub first time out no issues as they have used similar controls in games such as GTA. If you understand the principle of four channel control, then you'll be ok. Left stick forward is throttle, sideways is rudder for tighter turns, right stick is sideways for ailerons and left and right turns, and elevator to go up (down) and down (up). You can launch and fly on say 75% power and just use the right stick only and fly happily like that even.
    As I think of more tips (if I do) I'll add them here. Please feel free to add your own tips in the video comments. For example you can trim the planes further using the wire connections and the holes they go into under the control surfaces (I've never needed to).
    Music from UA-cam - Barge and Desctructoid. At 7:35 I have had to add an additional blur in YT Editor to cover up my details under the P40 but it also obscures the servo horn which had only three horns out of four remaining but it only needs two, so still functions.

    I am 65, been flying RC airplanes for 50 years. I LOVE these 400 mm warbirds! They fly incredibly well on beginner and mid mode, even in a good breeze. I never fly expert mode. Don't even think of trying expert mode unless you are three mistakes high or higher, and be ready to quickly switch back to beginner or mid.

      Yes I agree with your comments although I have flown in expert mode at ground level in no winds and the planes are fine. But they can often take a crash too and for me this is one of their huge advantages. The other advantage is I can fly low and close all of the time and not risk hurting myself. It's a different form of flying. .

    you cover so many of the subtle aspects of controlling these planes so well... it provides a wonderful reference for approaching flights at this scale between the assistance levels. I purchased a Spiitfire as my first aircraft after a lot of on-road RC experience. It's been a lot of fun but the learning curve has been steep and despite my caution, many flights have ended in a crash. Close attention to your advice is certainly a benefit to us rookie pilots; thank you very much for your contribution

    I had the Spitfire 5 flights and loved it getting a replacement. This is what I learned camouflage works! I was flying with a Tennessee forest in the background and it disappeared and after searching for hours could not find it in the tall grass. Should have kept it higher with the blue sky as background. Or when it disappeared sent it into a loop so it would have popped above the trees and forest. This is why I'm also get the Corsair (a blue plane on a green background) . This video has me considering the cub.

    I've heard of giving them a light misting of water based poly U paint in semigloss to help fix the paint. I haven't seen much need yet but mine are still new. However, I think that might be a better idea on the UMX planes as that foam is a bit more brittle and easier to tear chunks out of. Plus, the finish can look a bit less toy like with the right finish. Not with those dime store wheels but as I fly off grass always, and used to fly RCCA combat, I'm pretty used to not having wheels and hand launching always.

    Hi Laurie, very good review. Do yourself some justice and get yourself a multi protocol radio and you will find flying these planes a little easier. You can then add rates and expo. Jumper 4 in 1 radios are a good place to start. I only fly my micro warbirds in non stabilised mode. Just takes a little getting used to that’s all. I am hoping for Volantex to bring out a B25 bomber, here’s hoping. Keep up with the progress.👍

    • @Calvertfilm
      @Calvertfilm  Рік тому

      I understand dual rates but what is expo? I'm interested to learn. I have flown my Bf109 in Expert for over a minute but it was nerve racking as we get winds nearly every day by the sea. I waiting for a Hurricane or Lancaster (goodness knows how They'd do that). Cheers Terry.

    • @terrymurphy562
      @terrymurphy562 Рік тому +3

      @@Calvertfilm evening, when you set expo up on a radio, all it does is take the sensitivity away from the sticks/controls on the radio. The one thing we tend to do is over correct when things start to get a bit hairy and that is how we lose the plane/crash. Expo allows you Room for error around the middle of the stick movement. As for the rates it just increases or decreases the movement of the surface. On my micro warbirds I just use 20% expo and leave the rates as they are. Good trimming of the aircraft is also essential but has to be done on a calmish day.

    Hi, great review. Any advice on how to replace the prop saver please? Any advice? Just pull it out with pliers? Thanks

    • @Calvertfilm
      @Calvertfilm  Рік тому

      Yes pliers. I use a pointed set. Grasp the motor if you can by accessing the motor if you have a pull-out panel, and then support it with a finger too as you tug on the prop saver. It will pull off. Be brave as if extracting a tooth. When you put the next one on note it goes one way round and has a flat on it. This is indicated on the prop saver and you'll see it on the metal shaft. Push it on as far as the one before, so make a note of that too. Push it on with fingers first, then your pointy pliers in the centre carefully so as not to break the thing. Cheers.

    • @Calvertfilm
      @Calvertfilm  Рік тому +2

      What issue do you mean? The twitch? To correct that if it happens, just open the inspection hatch, rotate the offending servo 180 degrees (they should point outwards away from each other), then re-arm the whole plane and it'll sort itself out. If you meant the burnt out servo I had then just replace. Enjoy the Spit, such a good aircraft.

      Difficult as I have a few. For Flying the Mustang V1. For looks the Warhawk. For overall being so iconic the Spitfire. But really some of those things are subjective I realise. The Mustang Red Tail does fly so well compared to the others in Expert mode. That is what sets it apart. Even the Mustang V2 blue nose at 7g heavier doesn't do as well. Mind you with the gyro on (other two modes) they are all very similar in my opinion. So unless you are flying with gyro off in Expert mode I'd say buy the one you like the look of.

      I learnt with the Sport Cub 500. It does fly slower, and that is a good thing.
