- In this Hack Music Theory lesson, you'll learn how The Prodigy use (and abuse!) the Phrygian mode to write a killer bass synth melody in their new single "Need Some1" (from album "No Tourists"). But first... Tea!

One of the main reasons why The Prodigy stands out from most other electronic music, is their super edgy sound! This allows them to crossover and reach fans in other genres, which not many other artists can pull off. For example, they could be headlining an electronic festival one weekend, then a rock festival the next weekend. The Prodigy’s edgy sound is actually not due to the synths they’re using (yeah, of course those help), but the main thing behind their sound, is musical dissonance. And this new single “Need Some1” (from upcoming album "No Tourists") is the perfect example, so click play above and let's jump in!
ABOUT
Hack Music Theory is the pioneering notation-free method for making great music. Taught by award-winning music lecturer Ray Harmony, and his protégé (and wife) Kate Harmony, from their studio in Vancouver BC, Canada. Ray is the author of critically-acclaimed book series "Hack Music Theory", and has made music with Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), Ihsahn (Emperor), Kool Keith (Ultramagnetic MCs), Madchild (Swollen Members), and many more. Kate has the highest grade distinction in Popular Music Theory from the London College of Music, and is the only person on the planet who's been trained by Ray to teach his Hack Music Theory method! While these Hack Music Theory UA-cam lessons teach music theory for producers and DAW users, they are designed to accommodate all music makers (songwriters, guitarists, etc.) and all genres, from Electronic Music to R&B, Pop to Hip-Hop, Reggae to Rock, EDM/Dance to Metal (and yes, we djefinitely Djent!).

@@HackMusicTheory oh gosh, you actually rememebered me... gosh... you're sooooooooooo awesooome! you both are!!! just heavenly. Should you have a FB accoutn now i gotta be personal friends with you also... such nice people!
Thanks for asking, I think i've been making a bit of a musical breakthrough, and even if that part is all in my hea at least i've been going for quantity over quality and at least making stuff, which in my book is at least me trying. I ended up filling up my soundcloud account free portion so I moved to putting my new junky pieces on soundcloud www.jamendo.com/artist/513738/ixaarii ... The exciting thing this year is that i bought myself some orchestral libraries. In terms of tools I've been getting more into this cool software RapidComposer (if you're curious my last uploaded video is adressed for somebody on the RC forums who asked me about my workflow). So yeah, a LOT of musical excitement this year.
As always i'm always super impressed, thankful and filled with gratitute at every video HackMusic Theory makes. I'm further interested in modes, ways of using them. For example I know there's all sorts of graphs and formulas of progressions that work for major and minor but i've never seen anything like that for modes, yet surely similar ideas of musical tension must apply. I've been trying a bit more of B Dorian (my homey is B minor) recently, with even touches of B Lydian as some of my recent favorites... but I'd like to learn from you guys to use more Phyrgian. The other area I hope I'll understand more and would love if HackMusic Theory would make more on would be concepts of polyrhithm, practical applications. You'll see what a jumble it all is in my head if i tell you that recently i had some trouble with a 3/4 song, i wonder what's with other X/Y ... i wonder how oen would make a waltz... why or why then phrases from one would not work in another, what could one do to change that...
aaaaanyway, i bore you, don't mind me, I guess i'm just excited when I get a personal reply from my heroes. Thanks so much!
Ray you're an absolute boss, keep up the amazing work much love from England

Cool! Has a little bit of a White Zombie vibe, too.
Thanks for watching Ben, hope you're well :)
Have a great weekend, making music!
Ray, i'm pleasantly surprised that you're such a Prodigy fan ! If i'm not mistaken, that "Prodigy Phrygian" mode would include one augmented and TWO (!!!) diminished chords... Did you notice if they play those kind of chords in their songs or if they use only the Major and Minor ones ?
Great lesson. Thanks.
Hey hey Anthony, great to hear from you again! Hope all is well down under and that you're enjoying your July. Have a wonderful weekend, and until next time, happy songwriting! Kate :)
Leroy used to live a couple of doors up from me & Keith is around now & again about town...long live Essex!
Haha, that's super cool! Thanks for watching Andrew, it's great to hear from you again :) Hope you're well, and finding time to make lots of music. Until next time, take care and have a lovely weekend. Kate :)
I'm doing well Kate & same back at you!
2 videos back to back?! Goodness man, whats in that tea?
I know, I just got home and there was a new video and an empty box of yerba mate tea...
Thanks for watching and great to hear from you again! Kate :)
would e phrygian be in the key of c?
E Phrygian and C Ionian (aka C major) are relatives, as they both have the same notes but a different root. You can think of them as identical twins, where they have the same DNA but different personalities (i.e. Phrygian is dark, and Ionian is cheerful). Hope that helps, Dean, and thanks for joining our Hack Music Theory community, we're super stoked to have you on board :)
Thanks for the head ups Ray, the prodigy is back I had to check that. Their style is still very much punchy.
Hey hey Aurelio! Hope you're having a fabulous Friday :D
Very well thanks. I was actually going through your videos hack. I am sure most people know it but you could search your channel by theme through your playlist: today I was going for bassline and melodies. ua-cam.com/channels/DKiHSPstsj0silp519gt6w.htmlplaylists
