this is basically a slideshow to me. thanks to youtube blocker not working anymore I will probably get recommendations of more of this bullshit. it's HIV to me. the car is awesome but I can just look at pictures and the build/spec instead of this garbage.
My comment was deleted? WTF. The M44 motors we're proven at Le Mans, and designed by Hans Mezger. Revs? I could build an m44 to spin to 10k, what's your point? People buy these cars thinking their cheap because they bought old abused examples, at the bottom of the market. and then wonder why theyre not up to track duty out of the box. Then when they break, bitch about how unreliable they are, then they are too cheap to pony up the money for the parts that are rare due to age, and production numbers. He bought a fucking Porsche, then bitches about it being expensive. Dumb. The Mazda engine could give me a blow job every morning when I start it up, still doesn't mean it belongs in a Porsche. But yes, points for not just swapping a LS in there like some stupid hillbilly. Sure.
You "could" build a KL for 10k rpm if you wanted to with a dry sump oil system and porting work to make it worth it. All aluminum, forged nitrided crank. No mains caps the crank sits in a cradle, split block design.Weight is just over 400lbs. so about what a 4 cyl. weighs. The original factory intake was "inspired by Porsche" with stages to keep the intake air velocity up. And if you snap a KL timing belt it's non-interference, unlike the original 944 engine. Aftermarket springs with klde retainers and you're good for anything. Millenia S rods if doing a crazy build. The re's a German word for 4 cyl. Porsches... Volkswagon
You should have had him start the car. KL engines have one of the best engine notes ever. Having owned several Ford Probe GTs (Ford's MX6 sister car) in the 00s I absolutely love the KLDE and KLZE engines. Very cool swap.
My first one was a red 93 GT with a 5 speed , cloth interior , no extra features and no sunroof. Such a solid car! My last one was a 94 GT with every option available and with the extremely rare factory color "Coral Myst" Basically metallic salmon pink. Loved every PGT I've ever owned. They are great , underrated cars and sadly 90% of them were riced to death in the 2000s. I would love to get my hands on a low mile unmolested 97 GTS or 93 GT.
To be fair this engine setup with all its turbo gubbins weighs more than an n/a aluminum LS and power potential is going to be roughly the same. But theres is quite a lot of interesting engineering going on here that makes it quite a neat thing.
KLZE engines can be revved to 7500RPM stock. They absolutely sing. I agree with everything this guy said when talking about pulling one down and inspecting it. That Mazda/ Ford/ Yamaha motor, was originally developed by Porsche, so it's not as impure as you first may think. Not that there is anything wrong with swapping an alternate manufacturers engine from the OEM. Thank you for sharing.
AFAIK Mazda did the R&D on the KL series engines. They collaborated with Porsche who gave them some valuable input. I have never read that Yamaha was involved.
This is weirdly edited, all Larry’s audio sounds ADR’d and at 1:58 even though it’s just the guy listening it’s several shots spliced together, you can see the cuts! Sometimes you can see his lips moving like he’s talking but the sound is only Larry’s ADR, all the bird noise stops as well. Dunno why I noticed this but it’s weird anyway.
the camera doesn't record him that well, so they just turned up the volume for when he talks, i think thats why larry sounds adr, hes just way closer to the microphone, or maybe it is really adr ahahha who knows... and who knows what they cut
I absolutely love this!! Having owned a 93 MX6, that car was so quick for what it was and I loved that it was under the radar because no one ever knew what it was!!! This is an amazing swap, props for giving a great engine a chance at showing its potential!
That cat is my soul brother! KLZE in a Porsche! My dream car! Spoken by a person with a 911 and a Probe GT in the stable (yes, I know it is a KL03 in the Probe).
I would do both of these things. ZE swap a 944 and own a Probe and a 911 at the same time KLDE is what the Probe came with. KLZE is what you need to get. Swap it yourself it's easy peasy. Check the cams are ZE in the front head, check the compression (220psi, 180psi and someone is trying to scam you with a DE) KL31 stamp on the heads, and no vin on the block (because JDM only engine.) It's like stock only better.
One of the best parts about these motors is the sound and we don't get even a startup? A build this well thought out, clean and beautifully executed deserves it!
thank you to the hoonigan crew for posting such great content also the bonus stuff on the new website is epic it's like a virtual online magazine with bomb ass pictures that you can use as a screensaver thank you guys
I love those Mazda engines. I had an mx-6 with that motor and It was then I'd. The thing was a well balanced machine. That really is a great motor choice for that car imo. Great build!! Thanks for sharing Larry! As always awesome stuff.
Was that an actual "Clubsport" 944? If so, its hard to imagine anyone swapping out the motor on a fairly valuable car. However I completely understand not wanting to deal with a stack of repair bills annually and I am quite happy to see its not an LS-swap. So as far as that goes, I say "Good job sir!"
KLZE is no injustice to the car. It's lighter, more powerful, better built, and the sound of it is perfect for the vehicle. The original factory intakes were "Porsche inspired" with rpm based stages, which like a Porsche, made it seem better than the numbers or sum of it's parts. Non-interference is great too. Hey at least it wasn't a VW engine amiright? ;-)

The engine block splits into 2. So instead of having mains caps, the bottom part holds the forged crank. They go 250-300k miles easily. There's turbo builds out there that had 400-550hp. Good enough for Cosworth to use in 93. Hell they de-stroked to 2.0l. There were very few transmission that bolted up, none of which could handle more than 300 long term. I'm guessing it wasn't a problem with the 944 Tq tube setup

Very interesting, beautiful, and unique. That engine isn't one you see much of these days much less turbo'd. Would have been nice to get a little start up and rev.

A V6 is a perfect engine for the 944, I have no idea why Porsche didn't do a 6 cyl version of the V8 in the 928.

Marco Fabro indeed they do. Not a lot of people likes to use the pacesetter headers on it but I loved them. They had a real nasty rasp. ❤️❤️❤️
