- This setting blew our minds! This is probably one of our most favorite features on the GH5. Best stabilization option for shooting handheld.

Gh5 is so damn good.. makes me happy when a Camera you buy at launch continues to stay relevant long after you purchase it
Another year later after this new update and this comment couldn’t be more accurate! AF is so nice now!
Hell I’ve just purchased one in 2020. It’s still a beast. 🤘🏼
Still use my gh5 for all my shoots till this day!!! An amazing workhorse!
I bought gh5 in 2021 because of this feature as well as the great general IBIS.
With the IS lock, I can in post use warp stabilzer and set no motion, and it become a dead still tripod shot. And you only crop like 2-4%. It is super useful. If you are doing a low budget commerical, you can speed up a lot and use less gear. For example overhead shot for food and product, normally you need set up something and put camera there. It takes time and need more gears. With this IS lock and warp stablizer in post. You get a perfect still overhead shot. This is the feature that I call game changer. Not 8k or something else.
Yeah, I'm surprised it's not talked about much on these cameras. The IBIS/Dual IS is good but for still video shots like this (which is what I'm primarily interested in), IS Lock makes a huge difference!
It's good that you mention IS lock is only for stationary shots. People will say you can use it with pans, but i've found it occasionally fights the motion when beginning to move the camera on a tripod.
There is an IS pan mode for that.
How did I not know about this feature? I just tested it out and sat there in awe for like ten minutes.
I got 3 mono pods for sale!!
Life changed forever.
Bah! I know right?
Really? Reasons?
LOL!
Thank you for this tip. I have a G9, and this works great. I set it to the front button. Thus, I can shoot through the EVF, and switch on the LOCK while rolling. Amazing, it is a game changer.
Toxic Tabasco Does it need a Panasonic IS lens to achieve the IS lock.
I'm not sure, I've been using the 12-35 and 35-100 Power OIS II lenses. But with the dual IS I suspect it should work with native lenses that have firmware updates. Great feature to have for video.
I've shot some short films that are on my channel with a GH5 and had no idea about IS. I knew about the regular stabilization but never IS. Thank god it was on for all my shots!
I had to scramble for that camera when I finished seeing this! I've had that thing on this whole time and didn't even know what it was!!
Great video. I came here because I saw this setting in my G9 and had no idea. Yesterday I was shooting surfers close up and panning a telephone lens to track them. With LOCK on, it was causing some major problems as it [locked, let go, re-locked] constantly. It created a sort of stammering effect. Now I know why. Now I also know why I can be zoomed in to 800mm (FF) with my 100-400mm lens and still pull a locked off shot whilst not being locked off (on a tripod). The G9's 6.5 stops of IBIS is no joke. It's amazing. But gotta know when to use it. I do now. Thanks again.
I am Weddingfilmaker from Germany and I use the GH5 for nearly half a year. This Hint is so useful, thank yo very much. This will perform very well for me. Greetings from Germany
I have gh5 to this day, and this option still amazes me 😮
HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS??
Super cool function hiding inside all the time. Set it to a custom function button and BAM.
Thanks for sharing.
Dude. This is INSANE!!! Amazing. I’m traveling soon this will be perfect to get just that stable shot I need for handheld establishing shots of locations. Amazing. Thank you so much bro!!!
Holyshyt i m having a game changer in my hand without really knowing what it was and had it off all the time until i watch your clip. It s sick
I literally just got back from Iceland and really wish I knew I had this while there. Thanks for the tip!
GH5 continues to surprise everyone. I’m going to try this setting on my GH5!
Wow! After seeing this video, I had to pull out my GH5 and try it out. It’s going to definitely help me with my restaurant videos.
So helpful. Although I hardly use it as I'm always wanting to introduce a slight a rotation, pan or tilt.
I didn't realise this function - thanks man!
Yes! This is one of my faves as well. I have it set to the custom button on front near the lens and really dig it! Good stuff as always.
Technically you're supposed to use it like a tripod but if you pan slowly you don't have to turn it off. I never use my glidecam anymore.
This channel is nowhere near as big as it should and will be.. you guys are doing it right, just do it more often
haha thanks for the encouragement Cameron. we are working on finishing up some final projects before we launch into a lot of youtube videos we are planning for the summer.
Awesome, can't wait!
Great channel guys am very excited to find GH5 enthusiastic videographer's
Wow. Thanks for this tip. Huge difference.
very cool, maybe one day when panasonic gives us PDAF I'll consider buying one of their cameras
What did you film this with? Not the example but the parts with you in LA. The footage is fantastic!
That explains it. Handheld as a locked shot with or without ex. Tele Conv. Mode on.
it works whether you have ex tele conv activated or not. I would shoot without that mode on though.
I just filmed a short film 🎥 with my gh5 still a great camera
What are the actual settings you used for the sequence where you speak facing the camera? (not talking about the sea shots). Thanks and good work!
What a sweet update. Killer stable.
love my Canon but WOW that's super impressive!
Really just makes everything look perfectly dreamy and oh so sweet :)
Thanks Buddy Very Very helpful , such a short cut...
Very Cool. Thanks
I love this feature too, but I don’t use it as much because when the camera moves too much, the image jumps to compensate. I find my footage is more usable with a little movement than a sudden jump.
This means the sensor can't keep pace with you movement. It's only good for lock off, don't pan or tilt with it.
Shimon Galiley this really is only for a mock tripod or mono shot - switch it off when you want to move your camera.
I get it no pan or tilt, but do you find that it works with a side to side (slider-like) movement of the camera without tearing? If so iIt would give a nice little perspective change with a bit of foreground
Pretty crazy that this sorta stuff is possible. Didn't even realise this was a setting...
looking good my brother! Thanks so much for the tips
you got it my man!
I was on the fence on buying the GH5 because i thought the IS was good, but i've got very shaky hands...this is a massive thing for me, thanks.
OMG 😮. Where have you guys been? I’ve missed you content
maf36 spending time with our family and working on getting out of our backlog. More content coming in the next months for sure though.
White In Revery I am happy to hear that, all of it. Future content and most of all family time. See you soon 🤗
Love it! When will your FCPX Course be coming out? Also, will there be any of your special editing effect tricks on there? Love your edits!
Matt Seagle working on trying to release it in the middle of May.
the colors are so good oon this video, what was is shot on
IS Lock was a feature requested on the Panasonic GH5 Facebook group.
they listen to their peeps.
Ha ha...Pana's gift that keeps giving.
very helpful! thanks
Nice tips keep the good work
Nice tip! Thanks guys!
Thts well explained but whats e-stabilization? And whether to use it or not on what situations?
Do you know if the GH5 mark II has Lock IS? I can only see Boost IS but it doesn't work as well as the lock in the old body
Will this work with a speed booster adaptor and a non-Panasonic lens as well?
good question...
It does. I‘m using it with the Viltrox efm2 and a Sigma 18-200 and it works just fine
... I was locking for I.S. Lock (Video) gh5 at the gh6 - do you know where this setting for stabilizer is gone?
i also love this feature!!!
My GH5 IS Lock is greyed out and saying item in menu not available....Any ideas on what is wrong...?
Love it! awesome tip team!
OMG THIS HELPS THANK YOU
Hi, I'm currently using Nikon d5300
Sony a7iii is around 2500$
The panasonic gh5 is out for 1.5k $ and 25mm 1.7 is at 150$ on amazon.ae
Worth buying the gh5?
Cool tip.Thank you!
You can pan and Tilt I do and get great results but I do so very slowly.
Does it need a Panasonic IS lens to achieve the IS lock.
That is a game changer!
no clickbait with this title. just the facts ;)
Man I love the gh5
Can you tell me which lens used for this comparison? Thanks.
I just can’t decide on this or the Sony a7iii. The autofocus has me leaning towards the Sony.....for wedding filming and couple pictures
We don't take photos, so we're not the best for advice on this :)
Thanks for the tip!
What ND filter are you using? I’ve really struggled to find one that doesn’t mess with the great colors of the GH5
slr magic variable ND
Does the IS lock work only when the stabilization is turned on? There are separate settings for those and I can see that you can turn on the IS lock even when the stabilization is turned off.
Yes. IS boost works with image stabilization on. The e-stabilization can be turned on without IS I believe.
Yeah! GH5 is good, but what do you think about Fujifilm?
Are you guys more cinematic when passing through LA? Also why was Colton making all that noise. Monopods are so last year
lolololol luv u
What would happen to image if you panned, tilted, or walked with camera whilst having IS video lock on?
it would look jagged and not smooth at all. as if someone bumped you while you were filming.
@@Whiteinrevery got you. Thanks.
Holy crap...
WOW!!!
Hi dan! I have a question. Inhave the gh5 with the metabones xl, and i use thensigma 18-35 and the rokinon 85mm 1.5. Whenever i open the to their max aperture i get some purple fringing, anyway to avoid this?
Nice 👍
Nice one. Been using gh5 since release and had not heard of that.
P.s. have a look at my gh5 a7iii ibis comparison. :)
Will i.s. video lock come to the other Lumix platforms or is this just a GH5 feature? Anyone know. I am pretty sure the gx9 has i.s. lock also, just wondering if a firmware update might push out for the G85 and GX85 with i.s. lock feature unlocked on these camera's...
Very useful info!!!
where's than in Iceland specifically?
Amazing !
Do you use the E stabilization on top of the IBIS in your videos?
What is the difference between dual is2 and is lock? I recently started using the setting and it’s pretty damn amazing. I don’t have a dual is 2 Lens.
I.S lock is a more rigorous stabilization feature that locks the frame into one position, while dual is2 the GH5 to uses both the IBIS and OIS on OIS enabled lens concurrently.
In short, I.S Lock is a feature within the GH5's IBIS functionality. While dual IS2 is a hardware feature.
Sorry I asked before but didn't hear back: do you guys shoot all your weddings in 4k 60 FPS and not 24FPS? I know the final output/sequence is 24FPS, but does shooting in 60 FPS look OK when converted to 24 FPS?
yes it does. we edit in fcpx :)
White In Revery awesome thank you! No real jitters? Also, what lenses would you recommend on the GH5 for vlogging and also if you had to get just one for weddings, which?
How could losing frames look Ok when played back on a 24p? It's a difference when playing back at 40% speed
Hey! It's not there on my GH5 which means that I need to update the firmware right?
yup it's for 2.0
Stupid question, but how do you update to v2.0?
Imagery Wedding Films download the firmware from Panasonic's official site under the support tab (most probably). Load it to your SD card's root folder. Make sure to read the instructions.
So sick
Is that with the voigtlander lens for the talking scenes?
Chris Gronau yes 👍🏼
Does this only work with MFT lenses? I can't seem to turn it on using Metabones + Canon lenses
havent tried that out since we only have native glass. might not work with metabones then. thanks for sharing that info.
Wesleigh St. hi. It works quite well. 18-35 and 50-100. It’s a lifesaver. :)
is this available on the g85? (or g81 whatever)
No, also not on the gx85
Is there a reason why you would not always leave it on?
When you move the camera around you get this weird sticking/tracking effect because IS is actively trying to lock the frame in one position.
Why doesn’t it just stabilize with IS turned? It needs a lock?
it does more work for the lock feature. it still stabilizes regularly when enabled for just IS, but even more stabilization when the Lock feature is turned on.
Favorite settings should be HLG
Has the G81 the same setting available?
no, it does not.
WHAT LENS YOU USE IN THE VIDEO ? pls !
its listed in the video: 35-100
What lens did you use for this video?
the Panasonic 35-100 f/2.8 v1
Would you use it for tripod jitter?
Creative Income never experienced jitter when on a tripod. We turn off IBIS once on a tripod to preserve battery life.
White In Revery So Lock is turning off IBIS ? Or is that a different setting?
They need to update the G85
What did you film the intro on?
17.5 voigtlander in Vlog :)
Any thoughts on the GH5S?
love it and own it.
Dude
Really
If u pan with it it is like a slider! I disagree with not moving with it see this ua-cam.com/video/oq8wWZTekgo/v-deo.html
If you pan like a slider you introduce wobble on the edges of the screen which we try to stray away from.
shut up and take my money...
