Lee Evans to me is a modern day Norman Wisdom in his physical heyday. He must be one of Lee’s greatest influences. I saw Norman in Epsom in his Porsche a few years before he died and he started doing his classic grin for the passers-by. He and les Dawson are two of my favorites.

The difference between British chat shows and American chat shows is that in the US the presenters see themselves as the stars..and in the UK the stars are the stars. Never found Mr Bean that funny myself but Edmund Blackadder is hilarious and the last series deals with WW1 in a sensative but also humorous way, and of course Rowan Atkinson caused a bit of local controversy when he wanted to demolish and rebuild his Oxfordshire home in a modern way, still remember reading in the Local rag about how it looks like a petrol station, but Oxfordshire County Council granted planning permission in the end.

It’s a shame that Roman Atkinson is known about 95% for Mr Bean (this is because as well as finding it funny, because it is ‘silent’, it can easily be exported to other countries, with no need for dubbing, voiceovers etc etc which is expensive and time consuming. He doesn’t speak, and ppl around the world find it funny. Easy money. But I agree; I think Blackadder (series 2, 3 and the classic 4, in WWI like you mention) is SO much funnier and more clever. Especially with the rest of the cast, from Stephen Fry to Hugh Laurie, Miranda Richardson, Captain Darling….. just brilliant!!

I was passed whilst driving here on the wirral by an awesome James Bond Aston Martin driven by....yep Rowan Atkinson..!!! I was so gobsmacked I nearly crashed my car....he does have relatives here as does 007 ,Daniel Craig, neither get hassled as they do deserve their privacy. My favourite talk show guy is Craig Ferguson...who really made it big Stateside..now an American citizen....off to indulge my twin passions ( apart from Mrs C and Tranmere Rovers..)... a nice glass of wine and an American cop show, as always a great post Amanda...perfect antidote for these lockdown not lockdown days.....E

He called it out, I don’t like him either, but the fact the male interviewer said he couldn’t understand a word “he’s saying”, not “you’re saying” showed how uninformed, disinterested and bloody rude the three of them were. Brand has a huge personality, that interview could have been brilliant if they were good enough at their jobs to connect with him. Imagine how some of the celebrity interviewers would have dealt with Brand…

I don't really like slapstick comedy but what is clearly impressive about Rowan Atkinson with Mr Bean is he took a traditional clown like performance, and rounded it into a character which has no discernible language/script. As such it 'translates' anywhere in the world which made Mr Bean nigh on ubiquitous. It is why Mr Bean is often shown on in-flight movies, you don't need translations or subtitles - everyone gets it. Not only that, but it is inoffensive. In the before times I was on holiday in Gran Canaria, Mr Bean merch was everywhere. The same can be said for many other locations throughout the world. The pilot TV show was in 1990, over thirty years ago, and aside from TV there are movies and animated series.
It is a very clever idea, very well performed and deservingly successful beyond compare. (But just not for me) 😉

Great work as always Amanda, while we are on Rowan Atkinson, he was the corner stone of a show Not The Nine O'Clock News, there were some amazinfg sketches on it, sadly many were topical of the news at the time, but there are some gems that still work, such as Gerald The Talking Gorilla.............you will love it.
